HOW TO JUMP ON INLINE SKATES - Part 2 - Stomp Landing
This video is part of series and best watched in order.
Playlist --- goo.gl/BrYdcE
The every time you jump, it is important to STOMP the landing. A stomp landing is the best method of landing for two reasons.
1) The stomp landing puts the least amount of impact on your body. Landing improperly will cause more injuries and will contribute unneeded wear and tear to your knees.
2) The stomp landing sets you up for the next obstacle. When you stomp the landing your body is in a ready position making it possible to link difficult jumps together.
When executing the stomp landing feet should be in front of your body with your toes above heels. Heels touch down slightly before heels. Head stays up as your knees and ankles flex into a sitting position.
Thanks for watching.

Just want to give a big thank you for your videos. I really appreciate you taking the time to help us. I am 60 years old and getting back into it. I do for exercise and because it is so damn fun. I broke out my 90's Oxygen aggressives again and I am having a blast. I can't help, but want to push it more and more, but being cautious so not trash this old body any more than it already is. These jump tutorials are just what I need because I am starting with curbs. Thank you!!!!!

Thanks for another great tutorial. I agree the landing is so important. As a beginner I often land far too rigidly. Allowing myself to bend my knees far more is alot kinder to my knees!

Thanks for the video. Like the way you explain every little detail for beginners like me to focus on. Very useful to try for Indian conditions where we have huge unscientific speed breakers which can’t be safely negotiated without a jump. For all those trying this, be prepared to fall, so wear protection. My wrist guard saved a lot of scraps.

I thought I was supposed to land toes firsts then slam the heel on the ground not with heel first. My reasoning was that if I go toes first I have longer "spring" from my body to absorb the shock. But now I see you as well as the guy in video land almost completely flat - so confused. Also that was really cool slide/stop you did there at the end.

Hey thanks for sharing. As a beginner/intermediate skater, my biggest fear is that my feet would slip out from under me. And here I see you do it with ease. Obviously, I'm missing something or didn't get the memo. Especially with both of your feet pushed forward in the heel-pop and landing; not to mention your center of gravity is way behind the ground contact point in your hips; what are you doing to keep your balance ?
@FlowSkate

My shoulders come in front of me knees and toes to keep my balance. Thank you for the question. I will have to think more about this.

Thanks for the landing pointers. Thanks to your Toronto store, and you all inspiring me to take command of my skating from the ground up, I can say confidently that I fully can do this. Mind you, no where near as high of a jump but solid landing. Not to mention me switching my anti-rocker set to a flat.

Once again love your posts! Have you done any tutorials on how to fall...? I'm starting out with my skating technique, learning to do all the stops, i.e. heel brake, drag stop, etc. However, still a little unsure about how best to fall.
@plainuser48596
@plainuser48596 7 лет назад
It is best not to fall at all! From my experience it is best to land on knees first then stretch forward - you want to have big angle between your body and arms - ~140-160 degrees - so you can protect your head but you don't damage your wrists or shoulder joints. You want to avoid falling straight on your hands in such way that arms and your body create 90 deg angle. But truth be told it is unlikely that during fall you will have time to actually think about it, you could practice falling but wouldn't it be better to spend that time practicing not falling ;) My 2 cents
@zinahe
@zinahe 7 лет назад
As much as I would like to agree on the "It's best not to fall" comment; in reality, it's just unavoidable. Fear of falling is the biggest obstacle from improving your skills. Because it keeps you from pushing yourself enough to be able to learn new things. If you are not willing to take risks and want play it safe, the your progress is very limited and minimal. I'm not advising to be reckless. How do you know how much risk you are taking ? Well, if you are not falling once in every couple of sessions, obviously not enough. Too many falls in a day, may be you need to take it down a notch. I know it's easier said than done, but it's just much better to accept the fact that falling is part of skating. The quicker you make peace with that reality, the better. I've done my fair share of falling and what I have come to learn is that; learning how to deal with falls is like any other skating skill. The more you do it the better you become at it. I'd say fall early while you are a beginner and before you start gaining ground speed. And I can't stress this enough, learn how to stop. Last but certainly not least, don't forget to "pad it out, when in doubt" as Mr. Stoppard said it.

Thanks Z and Zinahe for your tips! I've been concentrating on balance and slower speed skill practice this last few months. At this stage only have a helmet but will be investing in kneepads and wrist guards soon. Eddy Matzger even suggested putting pillows on the hips when doing figure 8 crossover practice. Going to start making peace with the falling when I get the pads. :) Cheers guys.
@plainuser48596
@plainuser48596 7 лет назад
pads are essential when you're learning - without them you won't feel safe and that will stunt your learning, not to mention potential injury. Get yourself full set (knee, elbow and wrist). It doesn't have to be top of the line product.
@Bavmorda
@Bavmorda 6 лет назад
Also there are padded shorts, no need to get wrapped in pillows ;) I agree, falling is part of skating, the earlier you start falling the better, and padding is always a good idea, not only will you be protected but also feeling safer will decrease fear of falling, thus faster improving

Hi, what size do you have wheels on casters?
@Bavmorda
@Bavmorda 6 лет назад
I was practicing yesterday both the heel pop and the stomp landing. Since I'm still not very confident with my jumping I practiced this jumping off/letting myself roll from things higher than what I can actually jump. I don't know if that's a good idea, but I find it useful to overcome fear of jumping/falling... Ok, moving on to the next video of the series

I used this to learn to land properly "big" jumps backwards. It's very useful. But I had someone near me on jumps double the size of a curb (or more) to catch me just in case i fell forwards to dont smash my face on the edge. At the end he didnt had to do anything, but you never know.
@Bavmorda
@Bavmorda 6 лет назад
Albert Saborit Great idea. I'm all for using anything that makes you feel safe when learning something new. My padding and helmet are still almost as good as new, but they give me that extra confidence to try things 😊

Not positive (and he will probably correct me if I am wrong :P ) but I think his boots are Seba FR Shells with Intuition liners. He normally has wizard frames...but those don't look like wizards so not sure. Maybe they are the FR frames.
@plainuser48596
@plainuser48596 7 лет назад
Seba FR with intuition liner, 90mm frame and 84mm wheels. Also it did look like he had soul plates attached so it could be either modded with kit or seba FRA. It Couldn't really be wizard frames as these are UFS and seba FR are SSM mounted.

I'm not that big of a jumper yet, but I find it easier to land from backwards to forwards, than to from forwards to backwards.

With time you might find it easier to land backwards. Backwards landings are great for absorbing impacts.

So are you jumping from your toes or heels? I find it hard sometimes to jump straight up, and if I get too much toe, I fall forwards too much 🤔

You having a very common problem. I have learn a few tricks that help with this same problem. I jump a little bit to the side so my toes do not roll underneath me as I am jumping. I will talk more about this in the next video.

Simple excercise is to practice your jump "motion" while standing still. Some of my students start the excercise while on grass or while standing on the springy/soft asphalt you can find at playgrounds. The logic behind that excercise is this: If you loose control of your skates while standing still, you have less things to concentrate on and be aware of, hence more time for you to notice what is actually happening.

I happen to be fat in the belly. Also 47. I can tell you my skates would shoot out the front if I get that low. Maybe I need longer skates...
@zshocksoda1128
@zshocksoda1128 7 лет назад
First off, don't fat-shame yourself. Secondly, did you put the stomp-landing to the test to come to the result that your "skates would shoot out the front if" you "get that low"? Replicate Shoptask's lessons and perform a validation. Statim! Thirdly, if your limitation has been officially confirmed, I recommend the Hi-Lo setup. Big wheels at back, get smaller as you reach the front. Your weight will be tilted forward.
@zshocksoda1128
@zshocksoda1128 7 лет назад
Fourth, to prevent yourself from falling backwards during the squat, straighten your arms forward to initiate counter-weighing procedure.
@jkeiffer
@jkeiffer 7 лет назад
I will try to work on this stuff. I haven't skated since badly hurting my wrist over 4 months ago, so I need to get back into it. Also, I appreciate your fat shaming comment, but it's not untrue. Having a belly limits some of the things I can do or positions I can get in.
@jkeiffer
@jkeiffer 7 лет назад
Okay, I haven't really practiced this yet. But I did move my frames back on my boots. I think the back wheel low sticks out behind the heel instead of being under and forward of the heel. I put the skates back on and I can't believe how much better they feel. I haven't given them a good test yet, but I would say this has made a big difference for me already.
