Why not Thompson water seal? I’ve used it on some outdoor pallet furniture with good results. Once a year is good.

Mark, out of curiosity, after you put on the sun shield and letting that dry, wouldn't it be worth it to put on a couple of thin coats of Marine Varnish?? Probably won't have to do that for 3-4 years...Right??

Sunshield is a wax/oil blend and trying to put spar-varnish over it is a futile effort. If you want to use spar-varnish/urethane, skip the oil finish and the wax and go straight for it. It's what we do on boats which is where I learned woodworking.

@@theenderface7379 ...Ok, that makes sense...So wouldn't skipping the sun shield and putting Marine Varnish straight on be better for the piece in the long run??

@@ICU2B4UDO Saying it would be better is a subjective thing. It depends on personal preference. Using spar-varnish will make it lower maintenance but it's also a film finish which gives it a more plastic feel as opposed to feeling the wood itself. Some also really enjoy the maintenance over time so it's what you want out of it. If you do decide on spar-varnish, most now are spar-urethanes and have a UV barrier built into the formula but double check and make sure or the finish can yellow on you and the wood will still grey over time with exposure.
