I have been getting a lot of questions about quail fighting with each other and how to prevent it. In this video I discuss some ideas and strategies that you can use to keep fighting to a minimum in your quail flock.

Super excited to start incubating this week! When I first started I really just wanted them for eggs for my reptiles so I got a roo and hen plain Coturnix and a pair of Texas A&M hens. About a month or two into keeping them one Texas A&M hen was getting so badly bullied by the rest that I had to cull her so she wouldn't suffer.. it wasn't only her back of her neck but all over here sides too and it all happened over less than 3 days. I was wondering if it was because she was such a different color but the remaining A&M hen seems just fine for the last few weeks and both are laying great. Either way, we culled and ate her and it made us want to start breeding them for meat so here goes nothing! Watched all your hatch rate videos last night. Thanks!

Also add lots of water jugs, just use any thing to the same room that your incubator is in, as your central a.c. is DRY air, that U sucking on top of your eggs. So add water in your incubator room, raised moisture will keep the eggs OK on the 14 - thru 17 or 23 day hatch for quail eggs. Room MUST Be at least 70 degree's warm as well. You cannot have cold air sucking into, and on your eggs for 17 days, and expect a great hatch.

@@Slightlyrednecked EMERGENCY.....I believe the rooster I have justed pecked the living hell out of a hen this morning, blood all over her head, from under each eye and all along the back of the head... covered with blood, bare flesh it seems on the back of the head, one other bird seems to have an injured wing in the same hutch, maybe injured by the rooster or injured itself in the commotion. Removed the rooster, it had blood on its beak, at least I think it might be a rooster only have them a week, it was doing alot of crowing when I isolated it but didn't sound exactly like the crowing examples on RU-vid. Have the hen removed also with a heated blanket on a thermostat over one half of her pen to help fight off infection 23 degrees Celsius at a couple of inches above head height. 9ml of Apple cider Vinegar per litre of water there for her also, shes pretty shook. I have F10 Super Concentrate disinfectant and 99% alcohol for treating the wound if necessary. 57 eggs went into the incubator yesterday following your advice. Any advice on the injury would be greatly appreciated. EDIT... yeah 3/4 of her skin on the back of her head slides open depending on how her head is twisted/extended ....brutal. Flushed it with salt water, then sugar water, then poured sugar on top and another light drop of sugar water to dissolve the sugar granules on her head. I know you stated not to take out the injured/bullied bird but it seemed like the injury was excessive....and I thought I was doing well this morning, the universe sure loves a curve ball.

@@icxcnika9399 hey, your problem may have cleared up, but in case it helps, I used a broad spectrum bird antibiotic on my when after repeated bloody attacks from the male, and she has recovered twice using it. BUT I don't know the correct script, I just gave tiny amounts (two drops of liquid sulfadim by aristopet) twice per day for two weeks, and then stopped, and did not eat her eggs (shame, waste), for the next 4 weeks (6 weeks of no eggs all up), as the antibiotic should not be consumed by humans at all, and she needed time to get it out of her system (I assumed this was long enough). May have saved her life twice though. But separate the wounded female (still within seeing and earshot so they know she is there and to make reintroduction easier), and either syringe feed two drops or put drops in her water, make her area peaceful and quiet while she recovers, no loud sounds and easy to get food and water if she can't see. We had to dip her little beak in water a lot so she would be able to find it, then eventually food too. They need to eat to regain strength!! Poor things. Result of a fallen world.

Hello. I really wish you could help me out. I've been raising 2 female quails for 9 months now. They've been best friends since day one and they enjoy each other's company. Suddenly one day, one of the female quails laid an egg without a shell, and after that moment, suddenly she became aggressive towards the other quail. Because of that I can't keep them together anymore, it became so dangerous for the bullied one. So I separated them. But I really want to know how I can stop this aggression and put them together like before. Sorry for the long story and hope you can help.

Very few people realize all eggs must be kept at 50 - 55 degree"s for storage. Just freeze 2 1/2 gallon milk jugs filled only 60 per cent full of water, so the frozen jug wont split open, . and place 1/2 jugs inside of a 1 gallon milk jug cut in half, to catch all sweating water, inside of a large ice chest, and be sure to turn all eggs at least 2 times a day, . prefer every 6 hours, while in storage, before you want to hatch. Remember all eggs will start to incubate at 70 degrees or above. Never store eggs longer than 7 days, and add water inside of the ice chest, to keep humidity high. Don't want embryos to dry out.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 лет назад
That is good advice but it isn't really that strict. I have kept eggs for a week just sitting on the counter at 75 degrees and not turning and they hatched just fine. For best results though you do need to keep them cooler. I did an entire video series on storing and hatching eggs that you might like.

@nccrchurchunusual7990
@nccrchurchunusual7990 Год назад
I had that happen too. I removed the male & let the hens heal- they were bloody-all of them. Since I am not breeding right now, just eating the eggs, it worked out. I think my problem is my male needed another hen or two, but my cage is too small to add more birds. In your case, could it be the unharmed hen picking on her sisters? If there's blood on an unharmed bird, remove it, see if the others settle. If that bird is obviously trying to kill other birds keep her by hersself for the eggs or cull her. Happy quailing.

Hello Chris. Enjoy your videos. I bought 7 Jumbo Pharoah about 6 or 7 weeks ago off Craig's list. They were about 3 weeks old. It was supposed to be 1 Male, and 6 Females. I'm knew to this, so I I'm not used to sexing birds so I assumed that's what I got. Things went great until a little over a week ago. Then, I found one dead one morning. Couldn't tell if he was killed, or just died from something. About 5 days later, right before dark I noticed a severely wounded bird with blood all around it's neck. The next morning, it was dead. Things seemed OK for a few days, but I had gotten an extra cage just in case. Then, I noticed it. I had two males in there, and now 3 females. It's possible one of the birds that died was a male too, I just don't know. The 3 females were getting more and more scalped. The largest of the two males, was by far the most aggressive of the two. I removed both males and put in the new cage. The larger one immediately started attacking the smaller male, so I put the smaller male back in the other cage. Going to try and get more females by the end of the month, but not always easy to find. Anyway, not sure if I'll reintroduce the aggressive male or not. Just going to wait and see what happens, and watch the other male and make sure the hens don't get even more beat up or he'll have to go too. Any other suggestions?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
I am sorry to hear that you are having those problems. It does sound like you have an overly aggressive bird there. I would watch him pretty closely and if he doesn't calm down I would send him to the freezer. I don't tolerate over aggression in my birds. I don't want to pass those genes on.

Hey man, love your videos! I’ve got a question, I’ve recently decided upon trying to raise quail (coturnix) myself and I’ve been doing a whole lot of research especially on your Chanel among a few other ones, and every Chanel has a different approach when it comes to how to start incubating quails. I have ordered an incubator off amazon that pretty much does all the work from keeping humidity levels to turning the eggs every day. The only obstacle I’m coming across is the fact that I had to order my quail hatching eggs online. Besides the fact that I’m a bit skeptical about it being delivered via amazon, I was wondering am I supposed to immediately put the eggs into the incubator the second they arrive or is there some other measure I need to take before beginning the process?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
Thanks so much for the kind comments. I always let the eggs rest at room temperature for a day before incubating them. I am sure you have seen it already but I do have a playlist on my channel page for hatching and storing eggs. It covers everything that you need to do. I can't speak for eggs ordered off of Amazon but i have had good luck with shipped eggs. if yours don't do well check with Kansas City Quail Farms. Great selection of birds and great hatch rates on shipped eggs.

Now I have 3 birds, two ended out being roosters. They fight at night, and today I woke up and my original roo, named nugget, had been beaten up. His forehead is plucked so much it's bleeding. He is imprinted, so he is tame, and I keep him in my house now for the time being. I'm contacting a breeder, and there is a female I have my eye on to even out the female to male ratio. My parents just wont drive me there to pick her up. What should I do?

Hi 👋🏼 New and learning! We only have females 6 jumbo coturnix and 6 Texas A&M. The last ones seems to be more aggressive I have separated them and when I add them back they start picking on everyone else. 8’X 4’ hutch … it could be that the hutch is too little? What can I do to help the 2 Texas stop bullying the rest of them?

Can quails compete broiler chicken weight for weight? I want to have a regular meat supply, two chickens a week is average requirement.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
I am not sure about broiler chickens. I have never raised them. Quail are no where near the size of broiler chickens but I would say that the equivalent to one chicken is probably around 6 quail. You could do enough to have 12 quail a week to eat but it would be a big pen. Of course if you are raising enough to have 2 chickens a week that is a big operation too. Hope that helps.

I saw your comment on my other video. I think I have a better understanding of your question now. I am not sure that there is an easy way to tell how old a quail is. They are either adults or young chicks but other than that i don't know. The only way I know how to tell if it is an egg layer or not is to give it a few weeks after you move it and see if it lays an egg. Wish I had a better answer but that is all I can come up with.

I have a bunch of extra boys, I don't want to eat them simply because many lives for one meal doesn't really set well with me. I got them for eggs, but ended up with quite a few extra boys. Then a fox came and got some, again mostly girls (I don't know what it is about my girls they seem to be more inquisitive than the boys and try to get out more for some reason which of course leads to them getting hurt). I am going to cull them because it's necessary though, it's much easier for me to wrap my mind around they are making each other miserable and a couple of times a girl got into the extra boy pen (my pen is made with bird netting and there were a few kinks to work out and of course the birds found these weaknesses in my fencing before I did) and they brutally pecked them and made their heads bleed. They are mean to each other with no girls in there with them (I have heard that with roosters if there are no girls to fight over they can get along well enough as long as they have a lot of space, and mine have a lot of space being they have a netted run) but not to the point of killing each other, they nearly bred those poor little girls to death. I fixed the problems with the fencing but now I am growing the boys out a bit more. If I must kill them then I want them to be of decent size that something can come from it, but I am not killing them for food specifically. Just killing them because their quality of life isn't good with the way they are with each other, and the meat is a byproduct of that pretty much. I totally get it if you can't have chickens etc why quail would be a good option for apartment people for a healthy meat source but we are allowed to have chickens here I will be getting some meat chickens next month. I would rather take one life to make multiple meals for my family rather than 10 lives for one meal. I'm weird I know but no matter how logical I tried to make it to cull them for meat before I couldn't do it. Now I know they aren't going to be able to have a good quality of life I can cull them. If I had more girls that would be one thing but I don't. Also as far as my fencing and the fox, my bird netting is hard to see, he doesn't try to get into it (one time he did but he almost got stuck so he hasn't tried since) he just sits by their netting if I don't put them in the giant pet porter at night, and they are so freaked out thinking he's in with them they jump out to him. It's odd they can't seem to do it in the day time their wings are clipped etc, but fear and that adrenaline rush makes them super jumpers all of a sudden. I am going to expand the pen and make the chicken pen surround the quail pen so he will be like 20 feet from them. If they get scared and jump out it will be into the chicken pen and since the rooster and hens will be in their coop at night the rooster won't attack them, and since the fox is cautious enough not to want to be stuck in a barrier he can hardly see he likely won't go further. He tries to do his worst in a short time both attacks because my dogs go bonkers. He's a young adult (I say he but really not sure the gender only that it's young) he's not wise enough to stay clear of people yet. Older foxes tend to be more cautious. We had a fox in the yard before a bigger one and it came around the back from the woods (that is why my birds are in the front yard where everyone frequents) but it never came passed the border between my yard and the woods. This one is cocky but hasn't been back since my dog chased it last time. I am also thinking about doing an electric perimeter around the expanded pen just in case he gets really cocky. So far he just sits there and waits for them to freak out enough to come to him though and honestly I suppose that would make anyone feel cocky lol.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 лет назад
sounds like you have a pretty good set up. And I am not judging you for not culling your males or culling them either way. Nothing wrong with your reasoning in my mind. :) For the fox a strand of electric wire is a good idea. Put some aluminum foil with a smear of peanut butter folded in half over it every 5 feet or so. He will be drawn to it and try to taste it and then most likely will never return. Just a thought.
@mistressphoenix9314
@mistressphoenix9314 7 лет назад
I was thinking he does sit right up next to their pen so I am sure one of those strands of electric wire would work. The peanut butter is a great idea. As far as culling the males I just can't get around it I really did try. If I lived in an apartment I think it would be easier just because I know I wouldn't be able to raise real meat birds and they would be a good source of healthy meat without all the nasty hormones pumped into them. I just can't seem to see them as food, same with pigeons, some people go out and make a sport of hunting pigeons and I can't see why, I mean hunting bigger game makes sense you can fill your freezer for a year with a good sized buck. If you were starving and all you could get is a pigeon totally would make sense. I would probably eat a bug if it meant survival and not doing so would mean death it's still protein lol. I just can't wrap my mind around them being a purposeful food animal though. I don't have a problem with other people doing it. And I really have tried to look at it differently because I have so many quail lol. Because it makes sense when you have extra boys anyway not providing any food since they don't lay eggs and they just eat without even fertilizing the eggs since you don't need many to do that, and they aren't monogamous like you said one on one is a bad thing with them lol. I had hoped I could just keep them separate until I could hatch some more females out but then that's more males to get rid of too. So culling them is the only thing that can really happen here. And they for sure don't get along even with tons of room (my extra boys). Also having "free ranging" (at least as close to free ranging as possible with quail) I notice they aren't very bright. Very pretty and sometimes sweet birds (the one my daughter named Xander is very cuddly and he's a house bird since he's slow. He had an issue and didn't develop properly, he has no sense of direction it seems lol so the other boys would probably kill him) but not too bright. I know chickens aren't winning any intelligence contests but even they seem a bit smarter lol. They at least go in when it rains. We have something for the quail to get out of the rain that's not entirely enclosed so they won't be scared to go into it and most of them seem to prefer to stand in the rain. It's quite roomy (it's a pvs hoop canopy with a tarp over it. Just enough exposed so they don't feel trapped, they go in it just fine to eat and everything else but when it rains they don't rush for shelter (some of them do, some seem a bit brighter than the others lol, but most just sit there). It's a work in progress lol, I keep adapting to the new issues with it, but at least I haven't seen any ticks lol. Knock on wood of course lol.

Slightly Rednecked well that’s an honest answer, but I’m surprised that doesn’t cause genetic issues since your stock is getting further and further line-bred, supposedly more and more susceptible to genetic errors and physical problems which do show up in sheep, goats, cattle, horses, where they suffer both physical deformaties and more and more extreme health problems.

He is also starting to be very passive aggressive toward the hen when he sees us around. He'd run toward her and peck at her harshly. He always try to attack me from inside the cage. After I finished cleaning I put them back into the cage but that aggressive quail didn't stop. I couldn't touch her because she would just attack me. We thought maybe there was a sharp part of the cage we didnt see. My question is can roosters cause such extreme wounds to other birds? Unfortunately we had to put him out of his misery because he was lethargic and wasnt going to make it. :/

It is possible for another bird to cause damage to him but that does sound excessive. Usually they pick on them around the eyes and head, not the throat. Sometimes you just don't know what happened. It was probably some kind of freak accident. I am sorry I can't be of more help.

University Of Texas a.m. said all eggs need to be kept 50 - 55 degrees, and turned at least 3 times in 24 hours. All eggs will incubate at 70 degree"s or above. Ship all eggs, over night express, and will double the cost of shipping, but U will get a excellent hatch, by being over night! Don"t buy from E Bay or Amazon Prime, as all the quail people ship ONLY priority Mail, which is 1 - to 3 days! They wont hatch! Buy from some one on C.L. farm & Ranch who WILL ship Express Over Night!

@Slightlyrednecked 7 лет назад
Well don't believe everything you read. Not to say that isn't great advice but I get excellent hatch rates and i don't really worry too much about keeping them at 50 to 55 degrees. It is true to that they can start incubating at 70 degrees or above but not accurate to say "All eggs will incubate at 70 degrees". It isn't a guarantee. And overnight shipping is best but also not accurate to say that that eggs shipped 1 to 3 days "won't hatch". You may bet poor hatch rates depending on time of year. I agree though, it is best to order from a reputable breeder set up to ship eggs properly. My choice is Kansas City Quail Farm. Had very good results with his eggs.

However, all of a sudden the biggest hen is like a goon on the 4th line of a hockey team....running everyone. Jumping on them and pecking them pretty good. 2 have some blood at the base of their beaks . I have her in a cage above all on her own now ( penalty box), for a day or so to see if she mellows out. Do you think this is a good idea? Or should I have quail for supper ? Thanks
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
Sometimes you get an aggressive bird. It can be aggravated by too much light (over 15 hours a day) or sometimes they just get that way when they hit the breeding cycle (start laying eggs). Usually they will mellow out with just a little bit of time once the pecking order is established. If not, just eat the aggressive bird like you suggested. Hope that helps.
@syedzubair7122
@syedzubair7122 6 лет назад
Hi Chris, I had similar issue with a rooster pecking on one of the three hens in the cage. These 4 quail were together in the cage for about 7 weeks. All of a sudden this rooster started pecking at one of the hens and severely injured her. I moved out this rooster for half a day and returned it back to the group unfortunately overnight it pecked a lot causing severe injuries. I am still guessing what has changed suddenly for it to peck. The only change I made was moved their cage into a new room which has a light during the night and temperature was perfect.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
it probably has to do with the light. If it is on all night long it is too much light. They need some darkness. If it is only on for 14 hours a day then it probably kicked him into breeding mode and he became aggressive due to that. Sometimes you just get an aggressive bird. Those are my best guesses, I hope that helps.

Found your site today - great videos! I have a quick question re Button Quail. Do they tend to groom each other or are they heading towards feather picking? My little ones are just now starting to lay and out of 13 (in a 2x4 foot cage) I know I have at least three hens. Today I saw three (one of which I know is a hen) all huddled together gently grooming each other. NO aggression whatsoever, the groomee was obviously enjoying the attention of the groomer! Is this sextual behavior, indicative of gender, or just because they are clutch mates and happy with each other? Thanks!
