I have way to many roosters and I need to cull some of them. I often get asked how I pick which roosters to cull so I put together this video to give my thoughts on the topic. / slightlyrednecked
I find your videos very informative. Since I live about a half hour from KC Quail I will contact them about getting some roosters when I start out just to get a few in the freezer. Then I will get a breeding set of the meat makers for getting fertilized eggs. I may get a dozen hens just for edible eggs. Where I am there are a number of quail producers, but none of them are selling eating eggs at the farmer's market, and we have a large Asian and Middle Eastern population. So there is an untapped market here.
What a coincidence I just started culling some of my quail this evening. 12 to be exact. I have way to many males. I found one dead this morning which had been pecked to death. 20 or more need to go to make room for my coturnix quail from Kansas City that we ordered a few weeks ago. I hope to have a successful hatch . But thanks again for the video, they always seem to hit at the right time.
Thanks for the video, Chris. It's like you are reading my mind and answering questions before I have them. Have you produced a video on how to cook up those extra roos? Any recommended recipes to ease a family that's used to chicken?
I am getting lots of requests for cooking videos so I will probably do some. Just remember that they need to be cooked hot and fast. I like to flatten them out and cook under the broiler in the oven. About 450 for 4 minutes on each side. Season how ever you like or baste with BBQ sauce. Hope that helps
Long time watcher, just subscribed. I started out with 5 hens and a rooster. I was concerned about my rooster being overly aggressive with the hens when one day I actually noticed blood on the inside of the cage. It was a side wound, and healed, but the aggression has continued, especially with one hen that was slow to want anything to do with him. About made him supper a couple times, but want some fertilized eggs first. I know it's somewhat normal for the males to grab the hens by the back of the neck, so sometimes the lose some feathers, but in addition, I've seen him go for the hens eyes, and cause some problems. Just wondering at what point do you call a rooster too aggressive? Thanks for all your videos and teachings. All six were bought as youngions, and grew up together. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Thanks for the vids !! If you could only raise one (chickens, rabbits or quail) which would it be and why ? (Also, nice to see someone that even carries at home) .
I really enjoy watching your videos. I have to admit I choose roosters based on friendliness, which sometimes causes a problem. I like my bird's hand tame to make it easier to catch in a large pen rather than cages. I can catch who I will breed from and just put them in a crate in the larger pen so no prob's reintroducing them to the flock afterward. Right now the colors are too young to vent sex so they are in a cage. Trouble is they all jump out on me every time I open it - three flying to hand (looking for mealworms - I have hand fed these since chicks). Do you have any cage ideas to keep them contained?
I had to laugh a little at this one...had one bird jump out at me when I went to feed this morning. I am not sure what kind of set up you have but the door opening from the top down helps me to keep them in the cage. You might have just make a series of smaller doors instead of one large door so you can block the entire opening when you do open it. Just a thought.
I LOVE your shirt! Great info too. I have 11 Bob White Quail I hatched last year, they have never laid eggs, I just put a light in the coop last week, you suggested on another video. I have 6 male and 5 female. They are so melo, they never fight or chase each other at all that I have seen. Do I need to cull 4 male anyway so I can get eggs?
That shouldn't prevent them from laying. It really has more to do with the amount of light that they have. Bob White's can be a little more difficult than Coturnix but they should start laying soon.
Ciao! As I watch tour video, I saw one of your hen (silver) has no feather on its belly. I am worried as two of my laying coturnix hens have no feather on their belly. Is that normal?
I am not real familiar with valley quail but I believe that they can be sexed just by looking at them. I am pretty sure the roosters look considerably different than the hens.
Hey Chris, I can keep roosters together regardless of how many and they won’t fight as long as I keep the 1-4 ratio right? Or should I do the 1-4 ratio but in their own cage.
Roosters usually don't fight much with each other. That isn't a guarantee but if you do have a rooster that is overly aggressive it is probably just a genetic trait of his and it won't matter what the ratio is.
I do. It is marked as "adult content" so it may be hard to find. Here is a link if you need it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-30SWozbzYuY.html
What's the line between "overly aggressive" and regular rooster pecking order? I have a 2x4 wire bottom cage with 2M and 6F (Didn't want to risk just one M to make sure I got fertilized eggs). One clearly is the dominant male and gives the other a peck when he sees him to keep him in his place. At what point (aside from open wounds) would I consider it more than just saying to the smaller male "I'm the boss" and consider it an aggressive trait I wouldn't want to pass on?
Exactly the way I thought about culling my Roosters when the y get a little older. I have about 100 birds at this time. All ages. Two roosters crowing. I wind up with more hens that I wanted and probably will have to cull some of those. It looks like that my last hatch produced all hens, 38.
I have no idea why it worked out this way. I even had more hens in my Texas A&M quail. I am just finishing hatch some celadon eggs and will see how they turn out. Right now I have about 100 birds and I have only seen three crowing. I was really wanting more roosters but I don't think that happened. I usually run my incubator at 100.5.
I have never bred any quail except coturnix but it is very rare for a coturnix to go broody and hatch their own eggs. I am not sure how button or king quail would do with that though.
hi i did incubate 120 quail eggs and only 48 hatched then thy start to die on a daily bases til i am left with 12, currently thy are 10 weeks old and did not lay a single egg some of them is still looking like 3 to 4 old, i feed them game bird starter and top up with vitamins, what can be wrong or is this just a bad batch
New to quail but I would check to make sure your starter was fine enough for quail chicks. My adult cortunix eat a crumble fairly easily but I imagine for the babies I would put it through a coffee grinder. As for laying, light is super important. Good luck.
That can be difficult to deal with. The trick is to treat it as quickly as you can. You need something that will force the bird to keep its legs under it. That could be a brace of some kind or something like a large pill bottle. You can put the bird in the bottle to keep its legs under it (I hope that makes sense). I use a very short piece of PVC (I think 3/4 inch). Place the bird in there for about 8 hours or so and see if that does the trick. Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. If it doesn't work the chick generally dies so I tend to cull them out.
I have a little mut dog and lately she has been culling my flock. yea. forgot and left the door agar. they were not damaged badly so cleaned cook and eatum. Dang dog. didn't seem to have any criteria. Best hen got it.
Back in early July something opened up my quill pen almost all of them got out I had 10 total with four males one male was breedingbreeding with the others because the feathers were missing out of the head. One of my mails when it Gott out got killed by my dog I ended up catching all the rest of the birds and they still have not started laying or the roosters aren't calling anymore since this happened do you have any suggestions on what to do
just wait. It can take a long time (over a month) for the birds to start laying again after going through something stressful. If you have enough light they should start laying again soon. Good luck.
I love your videos, when do you do the live broadcastI live in the Caribbean and will be having some chicks shipped in the next few weeks to me, I'm praying they are not all cocks, as it's hard to tell when young and harder to organize the shipment here. I'm wondering if you know of a supplier of quail eggs in Miami, who I can contact to have eggs that I could go there to get them, or have them placed on a flight? Thanks for all the information you share. What meat thermometer do you use and where can I get it bought online. Congrats and blessings to you and your wife on your marriage.
Thanks so much. Unfortunately I don't know a supplier in Miami but if I come across one I will let you know. I am sure there is one in that area. I do live broadcasts on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (Central Time).
Hi Chris. Interesting video as usual. I was wondering if you can cull for crowing? Do the alpha males crow more than the others? If you remove the dominant males will the other males eventually take their place and start making just as much noise? In that case one may as well keep the biggest nicest males. I live in an urban environment and want to bother the neighbours as little as possible.
You made note of a male with female colouring. Assuming that the sizes were roughly equal, do you ever cull for male colouring.? Is it genetic? hormonal?
I usually separated the females I want to keep for breeding and egg production, put them in a cage and order a new rooster. Eventually I will start with better record keeping to be able to be sure there are good pairings. Inbred cages might go for another generation, then they are culled.but for a few bucks a couple times a year, it's currently not worth watching the genetics too carefully.
I have bobwhite quail, both male and female together. I'm trying to breed them, but people are saying that the male's cannot eat egg layer feed. What type of feed is good for both male and female, so I can get good eggs to incubate?
I don't know why you couldn't feed egg layer to the males. I don't raise bobwhites myself so I can't say for sure but I feed all of my birds a gamebird starter and they do fine.
Hello chris, how do you put the quail on the Barbecue?i have no Problem with Killing the roosters,my man can not do it 😂 but so far i cooked them for the Dog,maybe you can show in a Video how to prepair a quail for the Barbecue!🤔
Well, the best way I have found is to remove the breast (you can leave the bone in or remove it) and then just put them on the grill. They don't take long to cook, about 5 to 7 minutes per side. I might do some video on that at some point.
Someone told me you could keep 30 birds (Quail) in a 3-4 foot cage. that can't be right, can it? Also, is it true if you hatch them together yourself you don't have to have as much room?
Pebbles it should be 1 bird per sq ft. So 3x4=12 birds. I would not put more than 15. The birds will fight , pluck each others feathers, stress out , thus will slow egg production.
Actually, if it is a meat run of birds and you are going to butcher at 8 weeks old you could get away with 30 birds in a cage that size. it will be very crowded for the last 2 weeks but it could be done. As far as permanent housing I wouldn't go over 20 and 15 is probably a better number. and it is true that if they were hatched together they have a much lower chance of fighting.
So if I want 10 quail, 8 should be hens, and 2 should be male? I'm planning to buy from a breeder, so what would I do if one suddenly became aggressive? Cull the aggressive and buy a new male? Please, I need advice D:
that sounds about right on the ratios. Generally aggression will work itself out and culling is not necessary. If it comes to hat i would suggest culling 4 or 5 birds and replacing them in groups to keep the one new bird from being picked on too much.
Thank you so much. Lineage can be important if you are looking to breed bigger birds. If you are asking about things like inbreeding, it isn't really a big concern with quail.
Slightly Rednecked Thank you sir for the informative videos and our Fathers blessings. Very much appreciate your feedback and knowledge on Gods amazing little feathered friends He blessed us with. Hatched my first ten eggs a couple days ago and your videos helped a bunch!
Oh no. I am sorry to hear about your problems. I don't know how long the light has been on them but it generally takes a few weeks before they start laying. I know it is hard to be patient but they should start at any time.
Mine took 5-6 weeks after I hatched them to start laying eggs. I do not leave a light on in summer. Heat lamp in winter ( red). Daylight bulb in dark area's. Plant bulb for lighting.
As long as you have enough light (14 hours a day) he will start breeding again. Assuming that there aren't any stress factors like moving cages or predators.
Always wanted to raise quails for eggs but i live in a townhouse and already have a dog 2 fish tanks and a lot of birds Thinking of putting 4 quais on my flight cage with my finches. I think will work alright. My wife will kill me but we handle that later lol
I kept one cock to eight twelve hens, and kept based on egg laying of hens, rate of grow out, and breast n thigh meat. Otherwise I had some lines I encouraged to care for young, hide, perch, forage, and groom feathers and especially feet better, than normal ones. Aggression is verile vigor.
One or may be two of my hens laid two eggs in two days, and suddenly they skipped laying today!I have 17 females here, why arent they start laying yet!Its almost 53 days!
probably a lack of light. They need about 14 hours of light a day to lay consistently and the days are very short right now so unless you add some kind of external light they won't lay until the days get longer.
If you are asking if you can house them together, then yes you can. If you want to cross breed them, that won't work. You may get a few cross bred birds but they won't be sterile and able to produce young themselves because Coturnix and Bob Whites are different species.
A mix of the birds you already have and probably a few odd balls that don't match any of the parents. I know that isn't a real clear answer but honestly you never know for sure until you try.
Before I put the younger quail with the older ones my daily egg count was way down...and still is...the roosters don't crow anymore...the normal in the fall. My daughter in ava MO has similar situation...
I would to have some Quail,s as pets:) Iv'e had chickens before but my ex landlord was being a dick about me having them he called them (Foul Disgusting Disease Carrying Animals) he threatened to kick me out if i didn't get rid of them i was forced to give them to a friend i moved out shortly after that did not want to live in a house owned by an asshole:(
They are but i,m still with out my chickens they we're family i might get more chickens again if i move to some place bigger the place i live in now is not a good place to raise chickens.
Man.... I wanted to post good kudos for the quail tips, but I can't get past the awesome T-shirt.....LOL. You are SO PC, (incorrect), and I love ya more today than yesterday. I'd deal with the 3 days' hard ride just to buy YOU a bellyful of beer. Much respect......Eli
It is playing on the fact that everyone blames the gun when there is violence. it isn't the gun that causes the violence but the person behind it. Just like pencils don't misspell words but the person using the pencil does.
I never kill my roosters for personal choice, I just find them some more females :D, I'd never be able to kill even the smallest creature :/. Cool video nonetheless.
@@scantrahan Don't be grim or disrespectful. This guy is teaching me and others how to be self sufficient and is on a digital platform. Ergo, will live forever. WANKER.
It's MUCH easier to kill people with a gun than a pencil. Mass murderers can kill dozens of people with a gun with little effort in minutes. Even if someone there is armed, it's easy to get the drop on them and/or shoot them in the back if the attack is unexpected. Learning to use a knife or sword to overcome an opponent is much harder, more dangerous for the would-be killer, and can't kill as many people at one time. Cars can also be dangerous, but no one argues that you need to get training, show id, and pass a test first.
Wow. I think you missed the point of my shirt. You obviously feel very passionately about this topic. And I think it is clear that we have very different opinions on the topic. I think it is probably safe to say that neither of us will convince the other to change their mind in the youtube comments. But since this video is about quail and not about gun rights, if you can look past that difference in opinion I am sure you will find some very helpful information that will help you. If you can't accept the fact that we see differently on this one topic (honestly we probably see differently on lots of topics) and you have to focus on that one thing then maybe it is best for you to find another channel to follow. Just a fair warning, most of the channels that discuss information about raising quail are homesteading type channels and will probably have similar views to mine on this topic. They may not wear a shirt displaying it but you should know they probably feel the same way. I am sorry you were offended and I hope you get the information you were looking for.
wow. I am not sure how you made the leap to me being a monster in some way. Like I said if you can't look back a simple difference in opinion and focus on the things we agree on instead, maybe it is best to follow some other channel. As long as they keep their other opinions quiet you should be ok with focusing on the content of the video and not feel the need to call them names and sling hate at them. If you really feel the need to do that there are probably lots of channels that actually talk about these topics. I am sure you can find one pretty easily and find lots of other people like you that will all group together and call those people names too. It would probably be more fun for you if you had friends that would join in and support you.
@@Slightlyrednecked - "Funny game, the only winning move is not to play" I feel sad that you so thoughtfully responded to Robin Lillian (who likely ate meat today). I'm about to begin my own channel and really dread that kind of feedback. I suspect, the only response that could work with that mentality would be just 😊 and not one word more. It's like tennis, If you don't hit the ball back - the game just dies. Love your informative videos!
