The kettlebell swing has become more and more popular, and rightfully so, as it's a great exercise for a number of goals that I explain in the video.
With the rise in popularity and more people using it without being coached on the exercise, you're also seeing more injuries, nagging joint pain, and all in all an exercise that is not as effective because it is not done right.
I do a live coaching session with another coach Ryan OB and break down what we're looking for in a kettlebell swing, along with progressions, in this 15 minute segment.
There's more to a KB swing and my coaching would change based on the individual and where form issues or weaknesses show up.
My goal was to give some insight on how we coach it to maximize it's effectiveness and safety so that you can get the best results.
Let me know if you'd like to see more coaching videos like this.

I've seen dozens of videos on how to do the kb swing, and this, without a doubt, is the best one. Thank you for this.

This is the best video so far. You know why ? You have a real person who knows enough but with imperfections. I've been doing this for a year and I haven't been able to pull it together. I've injured my back slightly etc., all due to bad technique. Small little breakthroughs like you mention here are perfect for someone like me. Subscribed!

This is great. As a new trainer I have trouble getting people to actually make the changes. They understand it logically but have trouble implementing, like when he wasn't able to correct his head position right away. Seeing how you handled that was very informative.

Great progression. It was hurting my neck watching as I have neck issues🤣. His head was so forward and looked like he was looking at the floor. Loved that he adjusted to have better form. Fantastic coach, Great listener/learner. Thank you for the video.

Just have him look at a point on the far wall. And his arms and lags need to be tighter like trying to hold a sheet of paper under his armpits to minimize upward arm swings. Hips have to initiate everything.

The arm placement is confusing to me. Other coaches have said you should hold the kettlebell handles with an external rotation (as if you're trying to bend the handle) which forces you to deliberately keep your arms closer and PREVENTS the "almost letting it go" at the apex. I think their view is that doing it your way allows a moment of relaxation where their way forces you to use your core to control the kettlebell in both the ascending and descending motion. Who is right?

Do your arms lift or assist in the swing upwards/downwards in any way? Thanks.

I think to just to grip the kettlebell. The packed lats hold the lats/shoulder in place, and the core (front/back)/glutes are supposed to due most of the work. I find my thighs get tired first, but that's probably because my glutes aren't dialed in. Yet.

You did a great job explaining it it was just perfect yes yes
@wellnesspathforme6236

@@jamesgaether4402 Dan John suggested holding the bottom of the kettlebell to your stomach and doing the hinge movement. That is what really dialed is what really dialed in my swing because I learned what my hamstrings and glutes should feel during my swing.

I noticed the curved "cell phone" head and thought this guy's too well conditioned to make that mistake. Then I realized it was intentional for training purposes. I've noticed that mentally focusing on looking as far away to the horizon as possible at the top helps, as the posture tends to track the eyes...the smartphone is killing me/us in that respect.
