This is probably one of the only actually useful tutorials I have ever seen, I completely relate to alot of these details. like shoulder positioning, and pop angle. these are just things that are missing from other tutorials, I think mostly because most tutorials are presented by people who are so pro and so comfortable skating that things like balance, level and pop angle just dont even occur to them. They are just so comfortable they hardly consider it. Great, Great content, keep up the good work.

I agree. I started skating in the mid 90s and the only trick tips we had were Tony Hawk trick tips vids on tape lol. They were NOT in depth at all. I’d be way better of a skater now if I had grown up in this generation lol

Excellent video as always!! Thank you so much for putting in the work that you do for these tutorials. That ankle roll tip is huge. Consciously Rolling the ankle first and then flicking out at the corner of the nose has helped me so much. It’s so interesting to see all of the unique struggles that we go through to learn these tricks. Great stuff, keep it up!!🤘

Of all the tutorials on youtube, i find yours are the best. Thanks for taking the time to make them. Its nice to see a tutorial from a pro or someone that has skated ten years because they obv know what they're doing......... but tbh its way more useful seeing them from someone that isn't gonna show the steps and then kickflip over a giant trashcan 2 seconds later lol i feel i can relate to your struggle more and you give a more realistic idea of what to expect when learning a trick. Thanks !!!!

Thank you Sarah, your videos have helped me so so much. Ive had the same problem with the board rotating in front of me like a shove it but I’ve had the flick part down. Instead of fighting it i worked with it and have landed 10-15 varial kick flips so far but have only landed 1 kickflip. I’m working on gaining better control of that movement so I can *intentionally* do varial and regular kick flips. I was happy to hear what you said about leveling out ollies because I’ve been working really hard on this the last 3 sessions. Looking forward to practicing some of these methods this week. Thank you so much for all of the work you put into your videos!

Man, I have been practicing the kickflip every day for two years now without a make, but I think this video is the only one that has shown someone struggling with my particular issue. It's the board turning backside out from under me. Just like it does in the section where you talk about how popping "backwards" and trying to throw your weight forward was messing you up. I hadn't connected the dots until now but you're absolutely right. It's that desire to leap forward that causes the weird circular shuv motion on the back foot. I'm betting this will be the secret sauce that gets me over the line. Thanks for the video!
@SarahParkMatott

HIIII SARAH, Ur video was the key I needed to unlock my kickflips, specifically the “practicing the drag until the board vibrates” part. I practiced kickflips hella during quarantine but only landed maybe 2, and they were either rocket and I landed with both feel on the tail, or would only flip halfway. So I stopped trying them for a while. Have probably watched this video at least 7 times lol to make sure the info sinks in. I just came back in from skating and landed 4-5 kickflips in the grass, in one session! I’m tired and don’t wanna wreck myself but gonna try again tomorrow. I’ve been skating on and off and on for ~15 years and kickflips have always been so intimidating for me. So thank you so so much 😭❤️
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 2 года назад
ahhhh I'm so happy to hear that! :D Following through on the flick is so difficult--especially if you don't fully flick until the board vibrates in practice! Stoked you landed so many too. Just gotta keep throwing them into practice now. Land a few here and there 😃 Definitely second the not wrecking yourself for them though...my quad injury lasted a month or two from kickflips😭 But, seriously happy for you!

I think this channel and this type of approach is exactly what was missing from the world of skate tutorials out there. You have a very scientific mind and approach to skateboarding, and i am almost certain that you will/could be a great scientist one day (if that's what you'll be inclined to pursue, ofc). But mostly, I'm certain you'll master skateboarding for yourself, which is the most important thing here. 😊 Keep up the great insightful work, and thank you. 🤝👏🏻🍀

Another great video, thank you! I am 5'2 and to build a good straight down pop via differential pressure, it seems true to me that at that height it is necessary to have the hip more backwards if one does not wish to move the front foot too far back. It seems this is your experience, too. I have a large kid board with a 13 inch wheel base to help me figure out tricks before moving on to my actual board. I find it really helps, too. The weight distribution is far less critical on the smaller board (but it is over all harder to ride)
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Год назад
Ah thanks Stefanie! I definitely found that. Having my weight back more helped then! though, over a year later, I don’t have to focus on that as much thankfully! Funny how board size and skater size can have such an affect, right?

Thanks so much this video is super helpful!! I come back to this video daily. I landed my first kickflip 2 days ago but I'm not flicking the nose at all and its like as you described as "the quickest way to just say you landed one". Now I have filmed it and can see I'm not flicking the nose at all I keep rewatching your flick section and your steps at the end. Holding onto something really helps me practice changing my flick without having to worry about being distracted about committing or landing until I'm happy my flick is better. SUPER USEFUL VIDEO!

@@SarahParkMatott Yup it’s very frustrating when your brain and body don’t want to line up. I tried about 500 times today and only about 10 had a good followed through flick and didn’t land any. Repetitions and muscle memory will kick in at some point (I’m praying) 😅 at least I know what to aim for thanks to you 👍🏻

@@PokeMike it will. Seriously, the kickflip is 20% practice. 80% patience 😂
@PokeMike
@PokeMike 2 года назад
@@SarahParkMatott well sleeping and hours of kickflip attempts do seem to work for muscle memory! The flick is there 50% of the time now but the board is going away from me so I only ever catch it with my front foot. Guess I need to move my weight forward slightly or place my back foot forward a bit towards the pocket, I'll see what happens tomorrow! I only realised that's probably what I need to do once watching footage back rather than when I was doing it. I guess everyone has their own different issues with different parts of tricks. Recording, watching back + having something like your video as a reference to figure out what needs adjusting seems to be superrrr helpful!

I find it helpful to learn to kickflip and Ollie by using a deck with grip tape.. it helped me learn the basics of kickflips and Ollie’s.. even pop shuvs and shuvs Found it easy to learn with just a deck.. .. I take what I learned with just a deck to a complete an usually land it after about 3 tries.. it’s good practice

Cool! Many thanks for all your work on this! I need to practice knee tuck jumps. I can't even land a finger flip because I can't get myself in the air long enough to flip the board over before I land. This isn't about kickflips, but I can do shove-its on my Andy Anderson deck (it's not set up at all yet) on carpet, and I can do them with my other boards on carpet too set up with trucks and wheels! I just can't land bolts yet. Can't do it outside yet either, which I think is about exhaustion from my night work schedule more than anything. I just stand on the board in my safety gear and have no energy to even try. Trying to change my work schedule though so I'll be awake in the daytime instead of night.
@SarahParkMatott

I think that beginner skaters often think their "lack of skills" is what gets in the way of learning a trick. But, sometimes it's just situational. Sometimes we need to build up some other muscles first, like jumping, since most of us don't jump much in our daily lives. And sometimes there are outside factors like jobs, diets and energy levels. But, it's part of learning to skate--finding where it can fit well into your routine. I hope that you can get a better work schedule to skate with more energy!

Great video! I'm learning the kickflip now and this was super helpful. I'm wondering if you have any tips to what you do when you land primo. When the board slips out I have no problem, i just tuck and roll and don't get injured. But landing primo is a different beast and seems to happen a lot when attempting (but not landing) kickflips
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 2 года назад
Hmm..it's a little hard to explain what I do. I do have a video about what I do when falling...and I'd say my "hop bail" in that video is the closest to what works for me when landing primo too. I basically try to jerk my feet (hop) back up so that my full bodyweight doesn't go into the primo, and I can fall (or collapse) to either side without that slam that primos are famous for. Pulling the feet back up kind of slows the momentum if you can get the hang of it. I've done it a done when slipping out a lot, so it's become pretty second nature to me. Wish I could help more with that!

Even after we know in our heads what to do, it takes quite a while to get the body to listen to us 🥲 But you'll get it exactly with that "again and again" mindset. Just gotta put in the effort and take the time you need. You got it 💪💪
