Have you ever been attacked by a never ending legion of squirrels? Has your garden, fruit or nut trees been casualties of this furry menace? Today, I'm going to give you a sure fire way to even the odds. You set the traps and walk away and come back 1-2 hours later to clean up the mess. Set them again and repeat.

MATERIALS USED:
110 Conibear Traps (Qty 5)
3 inch screws or nails

studies show squirrels love 45 degree angles, 2014 telephone survey done in one of the largest squirrel communities in Patagonia showed that 93% of squirrels surveyed admitted "yes" they love 45 degree angles, 86% of squirrels surveyed said that 45 degree was actually their favorite angle compared to next favorite angle which is 60 degree. squirrels were asked why they favored 45 degree angles and the responses were because at 45 it gives them the optimal angle while running at the same time giving them altitude which is important when fleeing from dogs since, as one squirrel was quoted "dogs are stupid they cannot even climb trees".

I set up my squirrel pole and kill about 2 per day for a month, now dropping down to about 1 every 2 days but works great. Your positioning of the screws is all off though. You need 4 screws for each trap, set about 1/4 apart between 2 up, and 2 down, space horizontally about 2 inches. Make sure trap is on the outsides of the screws. Very secure and moves freely. Set screw straight perpendicular to the board, and hold up about half an inch. Our squirrels were chewing the wiring in our cars, costed us a lot of money to repair. Thanks for your video.

So, what to do with the carcasses. I used to bury them, but that got too tedious. Then I discovered that our suburban foxes are not averse to scavenging. So I just tossed them into a woodsy corner of the yard where they were gone by the next morning. The foxes are welcome visitors, as are hawks, owls, snakes and any other predators that target rodents of all kinds, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, rats, you name it. These little suckers are destructive and relentless procreators, and need to be controlled. The bleeding hearts need to find something else to focus they compassion on, say abused little kids, wounded veterans, or something like that.

FYI, the killing of squirrels being illegal is unenforceable. You as a property owner have a right to destroy any pest that is destroying your stuff or is a nuisance. The illegality is what the tree huggers want you to believe. Unless the cops are paying your taxes and your mortgage then you’re free to do on your property as long as it is not hurting anyone else or bothering anyone else.
@Tibor716
@Tibor716 2 года назад
This is false information for almost every State. If you're within city limits you can't hunt squirrels. Trust me I've looked it up extensively. I have an apple tree they raze every year despite my extreme efforts to deter them. Unless you're willing to pay a licensed exterminator of course...

Technically false, you can eliminate nuisance species out of season without limit if they are damaging your property after obtaining a permit from the local wildlife authorities. Without said permit, killing things out of season, even on your own property, is illegal and will result in fines or penalties.
@brandondowning6243
@brandondowning6243 Год назад
Also, if you think you "own" your property then don't pay your property taxes and see how fast it's taken away. Nobody owns squat in this country. You just rent it yearly from the government. Same with your car. Don't pay registration and you can't drive it. You merely rent the right to use it from the government.

Using an angled board the way in which you describe really helps. The bait is important, too. I just caught a nuisance squirrel who was damaging my home following your advice. The angle seems similar to the way squirrels climb angled tree branches in trees. Thanks.

I saw this video and it seemed to be the answer. I purchased 4 traps, got a 6 foot 2X4, set the screws per the video, and set up the traps. It has been 10 days. I have seen several squirrels run past it but I have not seen one get on the 2X4 and I have certainly not trapped any. I APPARENTLY DID TRAP SOMETHING MUCH LARGER THAN A SQUIRREL BECAUSE ONE OF THE TRAPS WAS MISSING. I am beginning to doubt the effectiveness of this squirrel pole despite the enthusiasm of the presenter.

I also just watched this video (5 years later) and tried. I had a squirrel get caught but not killed; it dragged the trap off but it wasn't too far away. I don't like the idea of not killing them instantly, but I'm not sure what else to do.

Had some squirrels in my mother's attic. My stupid brother put a squirrel trap in the attic in the summer. About a week later my brother said "Hey there is a squirrel trap in the attic, maybe I should check it." Yup there was one mean pissed off dehydrated squirrel in it. He decided he would drive across Atlanta to his school and let it go there, thinking it would never find it's way back. Well he say a girl he knew and talked to her then went to his classes. Came back to his truck a few hours later and the squirrel was dead in the trap sitting in the hot cab of his truck.

A five gallon bucket, fill with water 1/3 of the way. Put a large stick or log, big enough for them to traverse, on the bucket and ground. Sprinkle sun flower seeds in the water. They will crawl up the log and drown themselves while trying to get those seeds. You will get multiple squirrels.

We killed 39 chipmunks in one week with the method you describe. We were overrun with those damaging little critters (obviously if we caught 39 in 1 week!). The bucket/water/sunflower seeds definitely works! I would think for squirrels you would need a much taller bucket. Couldn't they just stand up to breathe in a 5 gal bucket?

You could use peanut butter just as easily. If you want to trap a lot of squirrels, the type of trap is the most important consideration. I've disposed of 350 squirrels since June 2014 from my backyard but most of them were caught when I switched to a new type of trap 3 years ago. The best solution to a squirrel problem is the Havahart #1083 "Easy Set One-Door Cage Trap for Squirrels and Small Rabbits" I used to use the old fashioned Havahart 1030 traps but I have upgraded to the 1083 and now have 3 of them. It also only has 1 door which makes it much shorter and I thus need a much smaller tropical fish tank to drown them in. You have to order them online, since the big box stores don't stock them for some crazy reason. This is the most humane way I have found to dispose of grey squirrels and I try and keep the water reasonably clean. The smaller tank uses less water. But most importantly 1-door traps are not only MUCH easier to set but they are also much easier to bait because the squirrel can only enter from 1 direction so the bait only needs to be behind the walk-on platform. You don’t have to “balance” the mechanism the bait sits on, thus the 1083 is also a much faster trap to bait. (My bird feeders and vegetable garden are both in the back yard and they attract grey squirrels, so I place my traps in close proximity to them. We have an Oak tree in the front yard but I don't have any traps in the front yard except in the fall.) The other great thing about this trap is that I never have any "set off" by birds. Every time this trap closes, there is a squirrel inside. The 1030 trap was frequently catching small birds, which was a huge waste of time. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed all day with a bird inside. Use cheap peanut butter for bait. And lure them into the trap with a few shelled peanuts. I then consistently take the carcass to the exact same place in a nearby woods for predators to find. I like to think this causes predators/scavengers to hunt rabbits and other small game much less frequently. I've recently discovered that possums will scavenge grey squirrels if you leave them in the same spot. I like possums, so this is a win-win for me. At night, I place mouse traps inside the closed 1083 so that only mice can get into them. (this keeps small birds out of the traps) I was surprised to discover a mouse infestation, that I was completely unaware of. The first 8 days I did this, I caught 14 mice behind our garage. email me or call with questions. devilsadvacat at gmail WRZ 2020-04-20

Well, with the price of meat going to $30.00 a lb, people might just need those pesky squirrels and chipmunks for a food source. There is a swamp rat called a nutrient, that many folks consider a delicacy. It looks more like a Beaver without the flat tail. But if the big $ set up is coming as the preppers predict, I'd rather eat squirrel or chipmunk stew then destroy my body living for long term on freeze dried food that is loaded with assorted chemicals and tons of salt to get them eatable. And I'd take squirrel over potato soup any day.

The jaws rotate and are under spring pressure and the wire you see hanging is a trigger. When the squirrel brushes past the trigger. the "jaws" of the trap rotate the opposite way either killing it by broken neck or back, or on larger traps and animals suffocation or drowning (beaver). These are VERY effective traps...especially at instantaneous killing of smaller animals.

Interesting video though I disagree with "things are illegal because they work". You must be able to guess at some of the dangers of hooking a car battery up to a pond, throwing grenades or any other banned fishing method. Could ruin the ecology of the whole pond or kill half of it right off. And with this trap, I'd feel uncomfortable setting them without monitoring the area closely as there are some protected species of squirrel, it could also kill woodpeckers and other animals that like to climb beyond just field mice. But this is a good survival technique.

ON THE OTHER HAND...... I had a carolina dog that had ten times the brains of every terrier in the world. She figured out how to work with the cats... by watching their every move she knew when they were on the hunt. they would tag team the squirrel.... it would see the cat stalking it in the distance and prepare to run...but before it could get to the safety of its tree there would be a cat waiting for it at the base, so it would run for the next tree - which of course meant the first cat would get it before it could reach safety.... cue the dog. For weeks we couldnt figure out how she was catching them but my husband actually got to witness the spectacle early one morning.
