For my potted plants, I also found that moving them into my shower and “hosing” them off with my detachable shower head and then applying neem oil helped too. Between sprays I also think I’m gonna try checking my leaves daily, wiping them down with alcohol on a microfiber cloth, and then gently misting them with water to keep the environment from getting dry enough to keep those suckers happy. Thank you for all your info
Thanks for this Scott, tried it on my roses today so will follow your advice and come back in 3 day to retreat and check. They are house plants that mean alot to me so hope this blasts the bugs!!
You should see the bugs dying off in a day or two (at least that's what happened with my mites), but the damage is done to the leaves and on my squash, few leaves made it, I have to wait for new ones to come in. It really harmed my cukes and they are still suffering. I could baby them along and the new growth is just fine, but they are behind schedule now.
Wow, Scott those spider mites really got a hold of that spinach. Neem is a great way to deal with spider mites, another great product which is also organic is SB plant invigorated, this is a soap-based solution, both of these will help with spider mites. Ideally catching them before they get to this stage though. Time to get the folia sprayer working and dealing with them. Great video Scott. Hope you get on top of them quickly. Tony
Thanks Tony, yeah the mites really swept through. Last spring was a hard gardening year. I didn't catch them early at all, and that was the problem. Have a great day!
Used it on my Medicinal Cannabis Plants around 10 years ago for spider mites. It definitely did the trick. I like it because it's organic, no chemicals needed and it allows me to spend some one on one time with the girls. ;-)
Scott Head hi Scott i have all my balcony vegetables container with spider mites now , i have try everything did bot work . Then i saw neem oil , i run into Walmart and bought it , hopefully it will kill them , i crawl all over inside my container soil too , do you think neem oil will eventually kill it all ?
Looks like you had some beneficial predatory mites attacking the little lighter bad mites. Does the neem kill the good ones or?? I also have praying mantis that hatched and some lacewing larvae but a bad mite issue…
Last year I grew my first zucchini plant and I had spider mites but I didn’t know what they were and my plant just died off with only a few zucchini having been taken off. I wasn’t sure what to do and had hoped that just washing them off in the morning with a Hose spray might take care of them, but now I see that they are in fact a bug which needs to be smothered out over a bit of time. Thanks for the demonstration here. I’ll be ready this season!
Thanks for the info! I am growing a few summer and winter squash this year. I've never had success with squash, powdery mildew and now I wonder if I had some of the spider mites. I'm quite up north from you so mine aren't in the garden yet, but I will pick up some neem oil and be ready! On another topic, I purchased my first fig starting's. I finally found a hearty variety for my 6B zone. I see that you are quite a fig grower! As a matter of fact, that might be what inspired me to buy these plants. I was looking to see if you had a playlist of your fig videos and I didn't see one. Are there any you would recommend for a newbie fig grower? Thanks so much!
Great info and you're the only one who's mentioned the little bit of info I've been after. I knew they could travel on the wind but wasn't sure if they blew around like a spec of dust or did it the same way some spiders do by parachuting on a tiny piece of silk. I suspected they probably did. It makes sense with them being so small, but I wasn't sure. But I suspect they probably got into my grow room because I wasn't careful enough after being in the garden though. I thought it might happen sooner or later and I'd tried to be careful, but not careful enough apparently. Oh well, ya live and learn I suppose.
in early stadium they dont use net for that, that is when the problem is BIG, may be THEN ...i have them since 3 grows.. i used neem-oil and lady bugg larves (better than grown ones) NOW lets see--
@@Erika_Kohl The easiest way is to starve them out. I grow my clones and veg plant in a cupboard and then flower the plant in a grow tent. They're close by each other but fortunately I only had them in my flowering tent. So I cleaned the tent thoroughly but then didn't put another plant in it for about a month. They can only survive for a week or 2 while not feeding on a plant so if there was any left in the tent they starved to death. So if possible don't grow in the space they're in for a few weeks and they'll die without you having to do much. Or another time I had them whilst growing 9 plants in a much bigger space. I found them whilst the plants were still in veg and tried neem oil and a few other spray on chemicals but nothing I tried would fully eradicate them. So in the end I used flea bombs which did the job. Ya can flea bomb vegs plants and just wash if off but don't use them on heading plants or you'll end up smoking some nasty chemicals. So anyway, if you're struggling to get rid of them flea bombs are the go. I hope this helps and good luck getting rid of the little bastards lol.
Great video. Spider mites are hard to capture moving around. Sure do cause major damage. Thanks for this info. Will help a lot of people to recognise these little plant thieves..
I am in North Forida, and this is my first year trying to grow vegetables, it has rained so much, that i have lost many battles, however, i dont want to stop trying. Spider mites and worms are the worst, they seem to be eating everything in no time. Thank you for posting.
Look up and subscribe to my friend "David the Good" on RU-vid. He is just back fro gardening for several years in the tropics, but is a FLorida gardener at heart. He is now near Pensacola (well, on the Alabama side of the border now) but he's a wealth of info on Florida gardening. He is just now starting new gardens and will be good to see him grow.
@@FixItWithMe Yes. I have done it a couple of times now and it has worked in kind of little mites and things. I use a pretty small amount in the bucket. But I really do drench the soil. About half cup per bucket.
@@graedot just half cup of neem oil in a 5 gallon bucket?? And u don’t add anything else to it like a drop of soap? So I’ve been using a handheld Stihl bg50 and blowing the leaves of my burning bush 1x/day. The spider mites are small and they just blow right off the leaves. I also blow all the leaves that fell off already away and bag it up and dispose of it so that any eggs that are on it are gone. Then I make sure my irrigation hits the plant every night as well. It has done wonders in putting the spider mite population down.
@@FixItWithMe I'm sorry. I totally forgot the bronners peppermint soap. That's a really important part. I had to use about a cup because my been oil didn't want to break up.
Hiya Scott! I feel confident going to battle the spider mite infestation on my indoor creeping jenny thanks to you! My creepy jenny is a fighter tho, got her at a nursery over the summer - three clear eggs and a scary half inch mystery larvae were living around the roots. I used neem oil extract and water but now I know I can add soap to it! I also did not know you could use canola oil, that's awesome!
Thank you for this info. Do you have experience with spinosad as well? Between insecticidal soap, spinosad, and neem, it's hard for me to determine which is better for a big battle. Love your channel!
I'm having an awful time with spider mites on my potted ground cherries. I believe the plants are past the point of saving, so I am curious if I can reuse this (otherwise) good soil, or does it need to be tossed? Can spider mites survive in soil to reinfest my next planting? Thank you for your great videos, I do enjoy them and have learned tons!
I'd keep the soil, just be alert for the pests. I'm not sure the mites hang out or travel with soil, but they are easily controlled if you see them, just have to catch them early before they take over.
@@ScottHead Thank you! I think I'm going to split it into two batches. I want to try flushing one batch with peroxide before incorporating compost, and using the other batch with only additional compost mixed in and see what happens.
I know this is late, but rinsing the soil through with boiling water will kill anything in the soil that you don't want. Just add some fresh compost in afterwards to restore good bacteria and nutrients.
you had 56 ounces in your bottle,, that is closer to a 1/2 gallon ( 64 oz ) One gallon is 128 oz. The amount of Neem you added was way too much which can really burn your plants that are sensitive to Neem oil. Use 1/4 of an ounce to 32 oz of water is much safer and still super effective. Free pouring your neem in the sprayer is not good either Scott. You really need to measure accurately. Like your video and not trying to do anything but help with this problem of spider mites. Works great on aphids too!
Thank you Scott, Would it be better to cut away the infested part of our blackberry patch, rather then trying to spray them? The plants are done producing for the year.
I noticed that I do not get mite issues unless everything is super dry and super hot and the plants are stressed out. I also noticed water spray keeps the mites down enough for me. Same with the white flies when I used to get them. I am now in a place that seems to be too dry for them. But I used to just spray under the leaves with water, disturbing them. It lessened them to where there were barely any white flies. After awhile, my plants were essentially free of white flies. I think it was not just water. They also do not like disturbance. Nowadays, if I see white flies, the first thing I do is just shake the leaf or plant. For some reason, if they cannot settle, they move on. Generally away from my garden.
Somehow I experienced the same way too. When I didn't check on my plants like 2 days (mine is hydroponic), they already all over the garden. But when I checked on my plants everyday, I rarely seen them, because I always look below the leaves and maybe they're disturbed 😀
Hey scott.know this is late but i never had spider mites till today.fortunately i caught them ,just a few small batches on 1 determinate tomatoe plant.not flowering anymore.i,m afraid they may get on my cukes and they are flowering heavy.the bumblbees love them, neem will kill bumblees ,yes.? Alternative in case i do have to treat.spray after dark maybe.residue though.love our bbees.
Not sure neem kills bumblebees, they have to ingest it and they typically don't feed off the plant material, though pollen they collect might have some neem.
@@ScottHead thankyou for your input.i take all your advice seriously....update : research....looks like it might be aphids not mites.the best magnifier i have is a old school 7x...caught them in time before webbing really ocurred...tiny white bugs ( maybe sheds) and slow moving mildly red brown bugs all together. ....uggh.neem the bugs before they spread aphids mites ...whatever.no damage yet, weird.
Great video, Scott. My complete room has an infestation of spider mites.. I'm using a mixture of 96% water, 2% green dish soap, and 2% methylated alcohol myself; seems to do the trick as well. I'm wondering if adding sunflower/olive oil would help in terms of "sticking" the liquid more on the plant. What do you think?
I like your sprayer! My dwarf meyer lemon tree is getting attacked by spider mites! It's potted and indoors It's Christmas day (Merry Christmas!) and I don't have any neem oil. :-( Should I use soapy water until I get my hands on some Neem Oil? I don't want to loose my tree. Thanks!
I bought a potted tomatoes plant. The leaves looked droopy a few days ago. I figured it was the extreme heat. Today they looked yellow. So I took a closer look and found tons of spider mites. There was even webs all over. I borrowed the apartment complex’s hose and gave the plant a good spray down. The actual fruit seems okay (they’re still pretty small and green.) But the leaves don’t look great. Is it too late for it?
You will need to spray with something more than water, try the Neem oil, but in the mean time, try dish soap, a teaspoon mixed in a half gallon to a gallon of water. Spray with that. Unfortunately, spider mites work very quickly and if you see web, it can be too late. However, even if your plant drops all of iits leaves, give it time, it might bounce back with a new set of leaves.
White flyes look like the Predator before he was visable in the movie . I thought the gov was walking around with Harry Potter suits on till I figured it out
I used a systemic pesticide for my colocasia plants since I had a terrible infestation. One of my plants is better but I found out the other one still had a lot. I'm scared of that pesticide so I'm giving neem oil a try. Thanks for the info, I'm gonna follow your advice. Also, that lizard was adorable! I loved that shot.
I have sprayed my bonsai for spider mites. I never see mites just small strands of webs you can see when the sun hits just right. Not sure if l have spider mites.
how can you destroy spider mites eggs and the earliest stadium of them? i only have that with the most recoommended treats... is used neem-oil and lady bugg larves (better than grown ones)
I think spider mites have turned my entire hibiscus a yellowing green and the blooms have hardened and stopped blooming. Will killing the pests save my plant at this point?? Or is it too late?!😭
Its a 2 liter hand pump sprayer, sort of like this one: smile.amazon.com/EasyGO-Products-EGP-SHO-008-Pressure-Setting/dp/B074XF6KQT/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvp?keywords=garden+pump+1+gallon+sprayer&pd_rd_i=B074XF6KQT&pd_rd_r=5ec6613f-2a8c-4f46-8627-820b031e6543&pd_rd_w=RnbZD&pd_rd_wg=CtuOs&pf_rd_p=a6d018ad-f20b-46c9-8920-433972c7d9b7&pf_rd_r=4R5R617YPQZ77HHTGS0H&qid=1557163690&s=gateway
Hi monika does it kill spider mite , it have been so hot then humid rain , all my balcony container now have spider mite i am trying everything, neem oil . Essential oil mixed , alcohol mixed water , hydrogen peroxide with water spray and spray , i almost kill all my vegetables some leave burn and still have spider mite inside my soil , how did you kill it . Help me please
I used bran new organic matter on my green beans and im growing inside. I grew cucumbers and out of no where i got spider mites... Again. Last year they wiped out my green beans and cucumber but i couldnt stop them... Neem, alcohol, peroxide nothing worked.
@@ScottHead dang. My guys are about 4" tall or long. So 2 big leaves and 1 or 2 small leaves on the cucumbers, so if i gotta do that its going to wipe them out
I think spray alone doesn't really work. You gotta get in with a brush and physically remove a lot of them. When I do that, I see the best results. But you've got to do it multiple times. So if you physically scrub off the hatched ones, then miticides will get the ones that you miss/ target the eggs. You've also got to make sure you are getting the good neem oil as he says in the video. 100% pure and cold pressed. You also have to worry about the mites becoming resistant to the neem oil, so physically removing as many as you can is really the best idea.
I call it "Randall." ;-) Just kidding. Its a pump sprayer, there are several various brands. Here's one that look similar: smile.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Garden-Sprayer-Pressure-Sprayers/dp/B07VT71BVC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=pump+sprayer&qid=1586551802&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExT01DUkZOQ1dHSkhFJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjIyNjgxMjZISkJIVDg2UTJWSSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzcwODYyMUdZQUNMR1AzWUNJUSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
Thank you! New to gardening and have learnt a lot. Got my self a 5L pump sprayer to spray stuff in the fence... No 30 second ... Here but some other average thing.. Alos doing the lawn. Love it!
As an amateur gardener I just realized the cause of my beans dying is spider mites. Unfortunately they are completely infested and I think it might be too late to save them.
I've been using this on indoor plants. It helps in the early stages really well and ok in the later stages. I use it every three days but in between i wash the leaves with a micro fiber cloth then the other two days I spray water really heavy to drown them. I never let up! Always spray right before the lights go off.
I was just out looking at the plants24 hours later. Most of the mites are dead. I will spray again tomorrow or Tuesday to kill off any survivors, and look around for hidden colonies on the other plants. Its a pretty good remedy.
Scott can you do me a favor look on your last purchase for the TharNeem, and give me the product number and see if I located it that way Please! Thanks for helping me.
TY for info 1.did U not notice your garden before a full blown infestation? 2. Things are too costly to not measure ingredients doubt it was anywhere near 4tsps🙄 Have your equipment near esp. for a video
My gardens been getting hit bad lately with little pests but we've had so much rain i havent had a chance to get out and spray. I tried dish soap alone before on my muscadine vine but that honestly didnt work sure enough though i added in neem oil and what a difference it made. Oh and i seriously love that pump on the fish emulsion you have! What a great idea did you buy it like that or put the pump on yourself?
Thanks for the comment, yeah the pump on the fish emulison is a new thing. I re-stocked my supply last week on Amazon and saw it came with a pump and thought that was pretty brilliant. :-)
Ill have to maybe find a pump to throw on my bottles. Got 2 already so i know if i ordered another my husband would freak lol. How did spraying the neem oil work during the day for you? I was rushing and didnt rinse the bottle out enough and was planing on only using dish soap and the leaves are now starting to turn brown on the plants i sprayed. Any tips on how i can save them? I was thinking giving them some fish emulsion and epsom salt as a little boost
That was over a year ago. ;-) It worked to kill off the mites, but they had done enough damage to knock those particular plants back a bit and they and to do a lot of catching up.
I gotten some neem oil today organic in a spray bottle already made. me and my mom had to take turns spraying it on our plants LOL we had bugs and squash eggs on our squash and our tomato plants. after that experience we came in and bought a spray bottle and bliss pure neem oil cold press lol.
spider mites basically ruined my whole life this year sadly.. I was taken totally unawares by them I didnt even know the signs to look for em. oh well ill get em with this stuff next year
I have a cat problem lol I put a fence up but they still get in y boxes is there anything I can put out that isnt harmful to detour them from pooping in the garden lol
That is a huge topic. I have cat troubles last year and had to literally lay hoops of hogwire over the part the cat was using as its toilet. I found nothing else worked for me.
Funny you mention the cats. In our city there’s a bylaw that forbids allowing your cat to roam free, they kill song birds which may be of a threatened species and really annoy neighbours who have gardens(like me) I have had a cat scratching up my plants for 2 seasons and the city really can’t do anything...unless they catch the cat. BUT I am not allowed to catch it for them!... that’s animal cruelty ..🙄 my solution, since I am but a humble citizen with a garden,is to put chicken wire over my garden beds.... so annoying that I have to do it,but I don’t want to have negative interactions with my neighbours even if their pets ARE a problem.
@@ScottHead I heard also to spread like hot chilli powder around so they dont come near is that a real thing an is that even safe I dont wanna hurt any kitties lol
@@derekcox6531 see half of these cats are just random strays people have let breed out of control an they tear up garden an even the flower beds especially after I mulch which is all the time because they kick it all out I love cats get me wrong just stay off of my car an out of the maters lol
I’m in Southern Florida, Gulf coast, and the insects are ever present and unrelenting.. spider mites are always there. Need oil seems to help, but it is a never ending battle.
I have tge same problem, i am also in Florida, but North East, this year seems to be the worst. Good luck to you, i will also keep trying, but it seems to be an ending battle. 🤨
I live in Los Angeles. We had terrible drought and heat wave this summer. Had really bad spider mite problem. Affected my tomatoes and pole beans. Left my Bitter melon alone. I'll be growing those plants not bother by spider mite coming warm season. In the meantime, I'm getting two California native plants ready as deterrent. Not sure it will work or not. I'm reluctant to spray since that takes too much effort on my knees and back. And it is an uphill battle.
Thank you for this video. I have a bunch of tomato plants growing. And I had put up some bamboo sticks to help raise the tomatoes off the ground. I did see some webbing on the cherry tomatoes and also on the leaves. I just thought it was actual spiders. But then it started to cover the entire plant. And these tomatoe plants I have a large and growing crazy on the ground wildly. One day I started to notice literally thousands of red bugs on top of each of the bamboo sticks and up and down the stems. I zoomed in with a macro lenses and thought actual spider eggs had hatched. looked like they were reaching for the heat and sun. I live in southern california. So I got some insecticide made from chrsanthemum extract. It seemed to kill the ones that came in contact with the spray but the next day they were back. Only after seeing some vids do I now know they aren't actual spiders but spider mites with explains the webbing. I had cut some leaves off and throw them in my green waste bin and the next morning there were spider mites all around the rim of the waste bin even with the lid shut. So long story short, thanks to your video, I know now a safe way to kill them all with neem oil. And if in a pinch can just use soap and water. I assume dish soap will do? Thanks for the information and video. Thumbs up!
Never seen it happen, but seen studies that show it to be a myth since the focal potential of a water droplet is rarely enough to burn, but oil droplets are able to burn. That's what I've seen and read.
@@ScottHead I have a jalapeno plant and the lower leaf tips are scorched from watering in direct sunlight. I accidentally got them wet because they were drooping a bit into the soil when I hand watered it on a 95 degree day
Have you ever used all natural ingredients that you can still eat ? You chop up 10to12 habonaros peppers and put on the stoe in a 2quart pot in a quart of water and simmer it for 45mins to an hour till it burns your eyes when you put your eyes over it. Strain it squeeze n mash the seeds n pulp up but dont get any pulp in you water cause when you put it in the sprayer it will clog it. This will burn the mites rite off the plant. Do 3 applications every 1day then every 2 days. Wash after this and use if needed again. But you should be bug free for awhile.
No offense you should first be measuring the neem and the soap Second the soap you are using should be Castile soap / no chemicals, third and most importantly you should test the solution on the plants for 24 hours
