Need to emphasize that when you work back, you always slip the first stitch before you work the rest of the stitches. For Arne this is just part of what working back means. It’s in his deep knowledge of the process. Novices with this particular heel construction need to be reminded until it becomes part of their toolkit.

The sound of the clicking needles are so soothing to me. It brings back memories of my mom knitting our Norwegian wool socks and mittens. She would also knit with the 5 needles and could make patterns with no charts. Wish I still had some of the items she knit for us 60 yrs ago.

What timing! My niece will be visiting in 30 minutes to show me how to do this very technique on my Christmas stocking! As you said, it is the knitting the stitches back in that has given me the trouble. Now I know to look for the grandmother. By the way, I really like the sound of the knitting needles. Clicking needles and a crackling fire, the sound of winter for me. Thank you!

I like the sound! I suffered a concussion 10 years ago and couldn't knit for several years because of the movement of the needles bothering my eyes/brain and the sound of the needles. Now, thankfully, I can once again enjoy the sound of the clickety needles. I treasure it now because it means that I am once again enjoying one of my favourite hobbies. And I am grateful to you two lovely gentlemen because your videos have taught me so much about "reading" the knitting and just knowing what to do. I think that so many of us were taught to knit only by following very detailed written patterns instead of understanding how knitting works. I'm self-taught from a book so I had no choice. Your very generously shared knowledge has been game-changing. THANKYOU!!!!!

What a coincidence, I just gave my acrylic version of this stocking away today. I enjoyed knitting it very much while I was recovering from surgery, but a young lady was impressed with your beautiful pattern and I gifted her the stocking. I'm always encouraged when young folks show an interest in something I love doing, and hope it makes them want to learn how to make it themselves one day. Thank you again for this lovely pattern. I look forward to knitting it again! ❤😘

I think some confusion, and the "slip as if to knit" or "slip as if to purl," comes from the fact that many of us purl differently than Arne's technique. And it's with the yarn in front. Neither is right or wrong, just different. I'm simply pointing out that maybe some people don't understand that Arne does a "Norwegian purl." (I think that's what it's called.)

Awesome! Thank you so much! I just finished the heel a couple of days ago after going back and forth figuring it out. I told myself it can’t be that hard. Millions of people do this every day. Lol The right side of the heel came out perfect. The left I messed up by lifting the mother stitch instead of grandmother stitch. (Can’t figure out why I did that. Lol) But, in the end I felt amazed how those stitches turned into a beautiful heel. Some people are so clever to create these patterns. Now I just started the snowflake section. Thank you again for teaching and all you both do. ❤

I taught myself to knit backwards because I dont like the process of turning work. So I'm also always knitting and not technically purling. It also means my yarn is still always in the back. It wasnt till I learned Norwegian knitting and watching the 2 of you show how you knit and purl Norwegian style that I was finally able to breakdown what I needed to be able to knit backwards.

I will certainly give you a thumbs up but I thought you explained the heel beautifully in your written instructions for the Christmas KAL. I’m with Arne: I love Christmas and think about it all year long. The day after Christmas i begin making next year’s gifts…so that I can relax and play during the holidays…and when I take that tree down, I’m thinking “only 10 more months until I can get another one.” Now, I know you disagree with me about the tree, but that’s the way I am. It is a work of art!! I love the tree. I wish I could have one all year round. Love the sound of knitting needles. Let’s have more clicks going forward. None of this silent knitting! ❤️❤️ to you two for 2024.

I LOVE the clickety-clack of the needles. I've turned heels before but never using this method. I thought it was very clearly written in the pattern and now think it is my preferred method. I can understand how someone who had never turned a heel before may have found it difficult so this video will certainly make it easier to visualise.... oh and all the people I give gift to are getting a stocking next Christmas! Two gifts in one... I have to fun of knitting and they have the fun of leaving them out... hopefully to be filled (shhh... don't tell them That I might sneak in a surprise 😁)

I prefer circulars but I do love how much easier it is to keep track of counts and stitch patterns on 4 needles. You're right, folks that don't do Norwegian purls need to know the whole "wyif" and "wyib". I love this heel because you don't have to think much to do it, just watch the gaps for the most part.

My Aha moment is that a Boomerang heel is achieved by creating double stitches (knit one through the front and back loop (kfb)) all the way along the needle. Where here you've got a stitch left on the needle, that stitch would be made into a kfb and then left on the next row. That's what I've been doing. In fact, kfb is what's used in the instructions to the German version of one of your books. This is a different version of short row heels to that... Not saying it's wrong, just different. Will give this a go next time - looks easier than fighting with too tightly knit kfbs!

I and your viewers can appreciate this podcast to help explain the heel. What bothers me is that if you had an overhead camera directly behind Arne we all would have seen a better view of this project. Yes an overhead projector can be expensive at cost but in all honesty I don't think some people will understand and knit the heel with certainty. Some will still not get it.

Hmm.. I think I will be watching this several times as I also got stuck at the short row heel stage. Ended up frogging back to start several times. One time I have no idea how but I ended up with the wrong stich count! I think it was thr left lifted increase that got me.. I had to remember... It it is a left lifted not left-facing increase. Ie it is only lifted by the LEFT needle not it has to lean left. That was one that confused me. The slipping a stitch was also the bit i needed clarity on, as i wasn't sure if it was slip purl or knitwise. I guess if knitting.. Slip knitwise.. If purling slip purlwise. 😅 The leg of the grandmother's stitch, i still need to nail if it is the left or right leg to lift. Hopefully after a few reruns i can get past the heel stage.
