Why did you put the article (la) for the word (mano) because it ends in o, is it an exception?

@LearnSpanishWorld
@LearnSpanishWorld Год назад
Hola Sham Shine...The article is el because most nouns that end with "O" are typically masculine. not all of them, though. Mano is an exception, as so occurs. Despite the "O" ending, it is feminine, hence the article is la. I hope that helps amigo

I struggle with masculine and feminine tenses, being an English speaker. What I want to know is what is it that determines the “gender”, and therefore tenses, of genderless nouns, such as objects and places? And what changes the tenses based on the context? Why do some singular tenses, without being tied to anything, inherently contain an “o” or “a” (masculine/feminine). Is this just a cultural phenomenon or is there an actual “logical”, linguistic explanation? I’m learning roots and linguistics on the side so these questions will eventually get answered, but until then, can anyone give a simple overview? I think this is a key reason why I don’t really understand other languages; the linguistic gap in English based on how words came to be.
@dilbertdoe601
@dilbertdoe601 Год назад
Probably no logic behind it. Most likely just made it up on the fly.
@angelvillalobos6776
@angelvillalobos6776 11 месяцев назад
Because that comes from Latin in Latin you used to have gender as well, just like other Romance languages like Portuguese Italian French, there no more explanation to it

ok so I get that there are masculine and feminine nouns, but what I don't get is what makes a noun masculine or feminine. it seems all rather arbitrary in many cases at this point in my studies

Welcome to the world of languages my amigos....You're right...Learning a language has a lot to do with accepting the way languages are....I remember a neighbour who had been living in Australia for 40 years and he was still unable to speak English...You know what was behind? He was never able to accept that English had different rules, and even some weird contradictions in comparison to his native language (Greek)...Sometimes you just need to stop looking for logic in grammar, and just accept that languages can be arbitrary in many cases. Saludos :)
