How to Know Your Faculty Advisor is Toxic! When to Know When to Change Advisors in Grad School 

Its so true, I had a PHD advisor like that in Norway. I reported that guy to the faculty

My experience in the PhD Program was HORRIBLE due to I have to coexist with a Toxic PhD Advisor. My advisor was NEGLECTFUL, especially during the time I was in All But Dissertation (ABD) stage. I started my PhD Program in August 2013 & successfully reached ABD Stage on May 2017. On June 2018, my PhD Advisor "verbally" mentioned that my research goes well, that I no need to do any more laboratory work & focus on writing my dissertation & that I would anticipate to defend & graduate by December 2018 or December 2019 latemost & he told me that I should start my job/postdoc hunt campaign during that time. I believed him & put a lot of trust on him. BOY I WAS DUPED!!! HE CHANGED HIS MIND BY February 2019 & announced to me that I need to do more laboratory work! Things got toxic from there. Then 2020 happened with the COVID Pandemic. Fortunately I was given permission to return home during that time. But believe it or not, my advisor wasn't satisfy with my work & he was planning to have me come to campus during the time campus shut down during pandemic to do more experiments... Enough is enough, I filed a Complaint Report on my Advisor to the Title IX Dean. Thanks to the help of Title IX, where they got involved, I FINALLY defended my dissertation on December 2020 & got my PhD Degree on the mail on March 2021. That means, from the time my PhD Advisor verbally announced "promising result that I would graduate on 2018 or 2019" but actually I got my degree on March 2021, you can see how much Toxic things was on the way between me & my advisor. I'm not so sure if Rate My Professor works on rating my advisor since that website only works for him teaching undergraduates but not on him supervising PhD Students... However, recently, I just saw there's this website created by a PhD Student from UC Irvine to basically Rate the Professor in terms of Supervising PhD Students: it's called PI Review. Here's their website below: pi-review.com/about-us Please advertise PI Review to all other PhD Students out there to give a rating about their PhD Advisors. The goal of PI Review Website is to help inform Next Generation PhD Students which advisors to select based on the ratings of past PhD Student experiences. Therefore, please let other PhD Students know about PI-Review.com. We need more University Professor Ratings because Rate My Professor.com only helps Undergrad students but NOT help Graduate/PhD Students. Thanks for letting me share!

My advisor is on two and half month leave. All the department are starting to submit their thesis and when i reminded her about thesis submission deadline she's asking me to extend the semester just because she can't come on campus on time. I have been planning to prepare for PhD entrance exam. I have been through so much shit this year including a fire accident at home and lost everything but the way she's been treating bullying me, everytime I visit her chamber i feel horrible and everyone in the campus is so scared of her. Nobody can stand to her. My mates are even scared to see her face. At this point i am starting to have really low periods and i really don't want to extend my semester. I am willing to do anything to not get extended. I tried speaking to her but she's been bullying me to the point where i am isolated from everyone. I don't know what's tomorrow is going to be. I don't even know if I'll make it past this stage.

I wish I watched your videos before joining a grad school.

Unfortunately this is my masters experience. Yes masters not PhD. I have lost any confidence of even trying for slave labour of a PhD.
