Just found your channel, don't know how I missed it before. It is superb, just love your presentation, must really make our American cousins think a bit. I now, with your advice, I am in the middle of trying to build a secondary bench top made of MDF so wish me luck. Perhaps It would have been good if you had actually showed a top being made and a how where it might need bracing. But keep doing a great job, you really make your programmes interesting for someone who does need your excellent advice.

Yes, MDF is great, but I did mine in MR just in case the damp in my garage got into the boards. Two full 18mm sheets. I tacked the corners then put a couple of sheets of ply I had on top to get some glue up pressure. Saves a fair bit of screwing effort. Three years and still great after a fair amount of abuse. Shellac on one side, danish oil on other, just to compare. Both seem good to me.

Apologies for the late reply, work has been manic this week! Always good to hear that its working out for other people. Do you think one is better than the other or near enough the same?

Shellac is so fast to dry if you are in a rush. I use it as sanding sealer and under danish oil finish on wood turning projects too. I think the Danish oil probably better for glue and paint clean up like your test. I've given edges a couple of extra shellac coats to help but the best solution is to edge with some softwood. Osmo Top Oil is also good, I had some spare from floor project. hard wearing but quite expensive and takes a while to dry. Kronospan MR MDF is great value for benchtop. Hy mate Iv just come across your Chanel , good to find another U.K. chanel. You look like you’ve got a huge workshop there , only seen few a videos as Iv literally just found your Chanel , I take it your self employed woodworker / chippy? What sort of stuff do you do , anything that customers ask ?

Morning mate. Yeah pretty much. You can check out our Insta or FB page as well for a view of what we do but we do are sort of "Idea creators" lol. Sounds corny but thats the best explanation. Clients come to us with an idea and we figure it out and make it 👍🏼

Would it be a good idea to drill the hole in the top piece wider than the screw shank so the threads only bite into the bottom piece? And if you were to do it that way, do you think you could get away with not predrilling the bottom piece?

Apologies mate, work has been manic. You could do, its all about what works for you 👍🏼

I redrilled my battons and used those as a guide for predrilling my bottom sheet. It worked very well. I also used some pinking sheers on a bondo spreader to spread the glue to speed that part up. I was gluing up 4x8 panels and the glue was a bit faster setting than was probably optimal, but by predrilling and spreading with the pinked bondo spreader and putting down guides before I started to line up the pannels, it all worked out.

100%, this would be adding a clearance hole, and would be ideal for this application.

Hi Josh just out of curiosity what glue would you recommend for moisture resistant MDF as I will be making a desk soon out of 18mm thick sheets would it still be the Everbuild 502 .

Apologies James, took a few days away as work has been mental. 502 will work just fine, what did you go with in the end?

I honestly just glue with contact adhesive used for laminate and then carefully assemble the two pieces using thin dowels until i have the pieces aligned. Clamp the panels firmly and evenly. No screws to get in the way of anything you want to do with the top. Dog holes etc...

Yeah thats a good shout, I have driven into the screws a couple of times 🤣 To be fair though, I've also snapped a whole bunch of nails and screws into the top as it gets abused no end lol.
