Thanks for the great info. Hoping to see what "A day in the life of bioinformatician in industry" looks like.

H! Thanks for this video! I found it interesting also the decisions to take into account for both research and industry. The biggest difference I've heard to consider both worlds is that in industry you can get "stability" but lack of freedom in your work compared to stay in research. Thanks again for sharing!

Hey there, I would love more insight into academia vs industry. I just got into industry coming from academia and I'm finding that the transition is more challenging than anticipated.

I don't even have an undergraduate degree in Biology but have a software engineering background. I am willing to do courses on edX and/or Coursera. Will that be enough to get a job in Bioinformatics?

I am a 2nd year software engineering student, what roles can I apply for in the bioinformatics industry? For background I did biology till year 12 in highschool and then proceeded to study software engineering. I am exploring courses in bioinformatics on the side including the one from rebelScience. I am also considering doing a bioinformatics project(idk which one yet) for my dissertation project. Is there anything else I can do to be job ready as I graduate?

Hi Maria! Thanks for the video. I was wondering something though, you pointed out that having a good online presence is very important in the early resume stages, and I wanted to ask, how would you go about online presence then you have multiple interests? Like for me, personally, I'm into bioinformatics, quantitaive analysis/research in finance, and tbh just Data Science in general. Do you think it's preferable to open multiple "platforms" (social media, blog, github, etc), do it all in the same place, or it's irrelavant? On the one hand I feel like a recruiter for "x" position won't care about projects about "y" (and might even be bothered by it), but on the other hand it seems excessive to build two different portfolios (and two of everything, really). I also would love that Industry vs Academia video, by the way :P

I think it's best to keep everything in one place, or simply don't worry about it. Like I ended up with 2 RU-vid channels but it wasn't necessary. You also don't have to worry about putting everything you do onto any single blog/website, you can write a Medium post, write on your own blog, etc, and yea I wouldn't worry about where exactly on the internet you put these things, just do whatever is easiest for you to get started with, if that makes sense :)

What about if you just came out of school like with a MS and have no research? How can we get an entry level position then?

You might find some of the discussion in this post helpful (my answer is under "marianattestad"): www.reddit.com/r/bioinformatics/comments/179jl4x/jack_of_all_trades_but_master_of_none/ That was someone with just a bachelors, so you should have an easier time, but without research output, you could be in a similar position of needing more technical skills to make up for the lack of bio research papers. Good luck, and feel free to give more information and updates here. I'll try to answer as best I can.

Salût Maria! I wanted to know if one can transition from Bioinfo towards more of an IT based job. I am enroute to finish my masters in Bioinformatics. I would love some input if it would please you. Alors, merci bien. :)
@OMGenomics

Yes, I've talked a bit about this in various videos: there is a range of roles from biologist to software engineer, and coming from bioinformatics you could focus on building your software engineering skills and slide towards the software side. I moved a bit towards that direction, so my title is software engineer although I'm working on software specific to genomics. You could go all the way to the software side too, assuming you build good software engineering skills, you can simply apply for software jobs completely outside of biology too.
@kevindave277

@@OMGenomics Thank you so much Maria. :) I have read about how difficult it is to transition (towards software development) and it by all means it may be true but your response lends me a renewed push. See you on your next video!

There are ‘courses’ now for sale on how to become a bioinformatician, claiming ‘anybody’ can do it. What do you think? I’m interested in freelance remote work. Which areas should I focus on to find that kind of work? Biocuration maybe?

Your channel are really great and informative , I need your opinion in my case, now I'm 23 years old a fresh graduate pharmacy student, now I'm very interesting to get in bioinformatics and computational biology and start my career,I have the biological background but I dont have any background about cooding and programing, actually ao was interesting to start a master is this possible or do I need to study a bachelor from the first but in bioinformatics, or just to take separate courses needed and then to be qualified for industry,

In the US maybe things are simpler... but in the EU the field of bioinformatics is extremely competitive, even having a conversation about how to land a job in the field shows the great difficulty of it. I don't know the US Market, but in Europe even someone with a Masters degree of grade 9.9/10 (honors with distinction, top of class)...cannot get a job in the field... I don't recommend bioinformatics as a career... because probably there will be no career whatsoever...

Here in the US there is opportunity; I just landed my first Bioinformatics job after getting my MS. The salary is above average too.
