How To Land In Air Mode | BETAFLIGHT CLEANFLIGHT

Air mode gives you control of your quadcopter when the throttle is lowered. It also makes some people ask, "How do I land with air mode on?" When air mode is enabled, the quadcopter may tend to bounce on landing. I'll show you how to land with air mode enabled so that you can take advantage of air mode without wrecking every time you touch down.

I land at high speed so my battery shoots out of the quad, automatically disarming it.

If you have children or at least one kid then aim for them, be careful they tend to run and sometimes run around objects, so that they'll be forced to reach out, protecting themselves I suppose, and grab the quad. But like Bardwell said be sure to disarm just before landing, or striking. Also the number one way to retrieve your quad.

Love the way you break things down bro. Agreed your throttle switch obviously will stop the bouncys, but it was so helpful observing your technique of forward descent then applying a little back tilt before disarming. My landings have been a lot gentler if not always heads up thanks to you excellent tutelage o sensei. Many thanks

Guess what cost me a day in the hospital. Doing what you did in the first 15 seconds in my hand :/ ... Thanks for reminding everyone to be safe!
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
In my opinion, never, ever take off from your hand. It is not worth it. If you make a practice of it, you will bite yourself eventually. If I were a big time television celebrity who wanted to take off from my hand, I would first do a takeoff and hover LOS and then immediately record the bit. But this is still reckless because it encourages people who don't know the safety precautions to be boneheads. The thing is, when you watch Penn and Teller do the Bullet Catch trick, you know they're doing a trick and you don't try to emulate them. When you see a Celebrity Pilot take off or land from his hand, you don't see the safety precautions they take, and you assume they're just as reckless as you would be if you did the same thing. Or maybe they are being reckless, and they're just lucky to not get bit yet. There is a guy at the local club who holds his copter in his hand on the flight line and throttles it up right in front of his face and wiggles it around to see if it's working. It drives me crazy. Even if he doesn't care about cutting his own face up, it's irresponsible to do it near other pilots.
@DiegoTheWolf
@DiegoTheWolf 7 лет назад
I totally agree to you! Was a rookie mistake. Held it down with one hand, armed and applied some throttle. Suddenly this thing exploded (FC wrong direction). Never knew why they said "props off", but they are nice knives.... BTW: keep up the godd work!

Oooh yeah, the first time out with a 5"er in a year a few months ago, my camera was WAAAAAY over exposed, so I brought it back to me, almost blind and what I thought was 10 feet away, ended up being my shin with DAL cyclones spinning up because it was in air mode, it peeled so much flesh off my shin that there was flesh on the frame, I was bleeding like a stuck pig- this was the first time and the _last time_ I injured myself with a quad- my wound is still healing and I'm sure I will have scars for life. For now on I establish a place to land, typically 15 feet to my right or left side and always use that area to land.

@@JoshuaBardwell kind of old but I did that once but I didn't mean to take off. I was just holding both the quad and the tx in one hand, and the switch got flipped (only 6 channels on spektrum so no prearm) I was holding it in such a way that I couldn't let go of the quad without dropping the tx so me panicking thought it wasn't worth it. I used my other hand to frantically flip every switch while my finger where getting chopped. I know where the switch is by heart when I'm holding it, bit from the side I just spammed all the switches. Ended up putting it in angle mode and making the motors spin faster. My thumb was so mangled I couldn't fly for weeks.

LOL! That intro... Good to know even highly seasoned and experience pilots jump when their craft doesn't do what they expect on takeoff! And say the first exact thing that I do when a quad goes bonkers. :D And no matter what anyone else says, you keep rockin' the sarong! They are super comfy and cool. We certainly know what the guys making fun of us about it lack; a good dose of self-confidence and manliness!

Another option is to turn off disarm at any throttle position. Then you can can come on in and as you approach your landing zone, flip your disarm switch. The copter will keep flying until your throttle stick goes below min check. Then you don't even need to reach the switch as you are focussing on ground proximity etc. This technique helped immensely with my landings A couple of points though if you try this method: 1. If you flip the switch really early and then keep flying on in to your landing area and for whatever reason drop the throttle a little aggressively to lose altitude, you fall out of the sky. 2. When you want to disarm because you are crashing, you need to remember to hit the switch AND drop the throttle. I found I got used to this very quickly.

I like to disarm just off the ground with a switch on the right side of the Taranis. It is also nice to disarm before getting in the grass so that its not a lawnmower. Thanks for the video. Also if I'm in an area where landing is an issue. I like to pass over my head from behind me, and then take off my goggles and land direct sight. Remember to do this with the sun behind you.

Mr Bardwell, I like your videos, you do a great job on them, and I always learn something. So believe me, I'm really not trying to be a smartxxx, but it seem that occasionally they can be summarized in a sentence. Like: "To land in Airmode, turn it off before touchdown" I clicked 'play' expecting the secret information on how to 'tame the monster', expecting a super advanced technique so clever I'd be totally amazed. I was just was a tad disappointed when the big secret was to just "turn it off"! Then a few seconds later, I was even more disappointed I didn't think of it. I do however, appreciate the advice, as it's nonetheless just as useful as if it involved a ground contact/propwash negating PID loop flight mode in the Taranis (which is where I was heading) or other sort of black magic. Like the gentleman below I don't get to actually land as often as I'd like do to an 'unscheduled object interaction' and appreciate being to end my occasional smooth flight with an equally smooth landing rather than the typical airmode 'inverted flop'. Thanks for all the great videos!

I put spring switches in place of SB and SC on my Taranis so I can arm and get call outs using my middle fingers while pinching. That way I only need to push down. I you have to hold both to arm and just tap SB to disarm, and tap SC for Mah call out. It is very easy to reach in pinch that way because you never need to get under the switch.

have your 3way switch on disarmed / armed (with motor stop) and airmode. Once you come in for landing, drop switch to armed only and just throttle down to zero, once you are on the ground, you wont bounce, and it works perfectly.

It would be good if we could have a squat switch on the undercarriage set up to give inhibition of air mode so that it effectively did this job for you. I guess this could be done with an add-on bit of hardware that fed the squat switch in as if it were an Aux RC channel - easy to do if the controller is set up to take RC data by the old one wire per channel method but could be done for spectrum slave, SBus etc with a little more effort.

I am late to the party here, but I have the airmode set to the right shoulder (momentary) switch. When the switch is off, airmode is enabled. So, when landing, my middle finger on my right hand can just push the switch "on" which disables airmode while I'm holding it. Arm/Disarm is on the left shoulder switch so I could do it this way as well.

Hi Joshua, is landing in Air Mode still an issue if you do not use the disarm approach? Rather than simply disarming to land, I've setup SB as Disarm, Arm+AirMode, and Arm. With Disarm closet to me, I cannot accidently Disarm the quad if I bump the switch midflight, but can easily bump the switch from middle to up position when ready to land which removes Air Mode ... is this better than just disarming? Will not disarming and landing while in Arm mode have the props cutting up the grass and making a mess or is there a way to stop the motors such as ESC braking, etc. etc.?

Thanks for all the great videos Joshua Bardwell. One thing I would love input on is accomplishing this - I would love to arm my quad (TBS vendetta) and have the motors not spin, but then have the settings such that once I throttle up and I'm flying around, dropping throttle to Zero will only bring the motors to an appropriate idle speed in order to maintain stability more easily in the air - like when using no throttle but still using yaw for example. Can this be accomplished?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
With a Taranis, anything can be accomplished, nearly. What I would do is this: Configure idle up so that the throttle channel does not go below min_check when you are armed. Bear in mind you can still run air mode if you want increased authority. The point of this idle up is solely to keep the motors spinning. Configure idle up to depend on a logical switch. It should be a "sticky" logical switch. The "goes-true" condition is when the arm switch is in the armed position and when the throttle is > -99 (i.e. when the throttle is raised). The "goes-false" condition is when the arm switch is in the disarmed position. Enable motor stop. The effect of htis will be that arming does not cause the motors to begin spinning but as soon as you raise the throttle, the motors won't stop spinning until you disarm. You will still need to lower the throttle in order to re-arm, because the flight controller won't allow you to arm with the throttle raised. I haven't tested this, but that's the approach I would take.

whoflungdo1 lol. Just gently decrease throttle till you touch down. You'll eventually see the ground come up when you get close. If you're doing a true circle and not an oval, you'll be able to see your landing target before touchdown at all times except when you're directly above it. That makes it super easy to come in gently.

I watched your Air mode explained video first. :) correct me if I am wrong, if you can relate. I see air mode as idle up on my helicopters. I always switch to idle up before lifting off a heli flight and if I did land in Idle up, I would of course do two things. 1. I would not push throttle past the 1/2 point, dont need neg pitch when I am sitting on the ground already, and 2. switch to normal mode so the copter settles in. Also related perhaps, if I even touch the right stick even with the blades spinning down and quite slow, it will tip over very easily. I understand the workings of air mode, thanks. Now to put it into practice. It looks like I would want authority throughout a flight, but need to disable just prior to touch down. So question, as opposed to hitting the disarm switch (we call kill on helis) why wouldn't you just switch to horizon or angle mode? Do we experience the same control loop in those modes?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
You don't need to disable air mode for landing if you don't want to. But you can if you feel like it. I don't use Horizon or Angle mode at all so I fly with Accelerometer turned off.

I use the two stage arming you outlined in your earlier video. One of the features of the disarm is that you have to hit the switch to disarm AND the throttle needs to be at zero (or very close). So what I do is when I am committed to landing, I trigger the disarm switch (but I am still running because the throttle is not at minimum). So when I touch down, i just drop the throttle to min and it immediately disarms.
@ryan0io
@ryan0io 7 лет назад
I'm pretty sure in Joshua's dual stage arming setup, the throttle has to be zero only to arm, not to disarm. I don't think it's safe to have to also lower the throttle, and hit a switch to disarm. If I hit the disarm switch, I want it disarmed right now, regardless of any stick positions. This way you don't need to lower the throttle when you're landing. Just disarm, and motors will stop regardless of throttle position. Are you sure you have "Disarm motors regardless of throttle value' set? If this isn't set, then you would have the behavior you describe, but not because of any setup on the Taranis. I don't know why you'd not want it to immediately die if you hit the kill switch though.
@briancase9909
@briancase9909 7 лет назад
It does require both the disarm switch to be triggered and the throttle to be below a given set point. You can see in the video he is doing both simultaneously, chopping the throttle and hitting the switch. I can certainly appreciate some of the advantages for pure switch disarming (and there have been a couple of times I wish I had that). But on the whole, I like the two stage because it requires two deliberate actions arming or disarming. I'm a klutz and I know I would hit the disarm switch accidentally while up in the air. And for me, the two stage disarm works well on landings.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
+Brian Case no that's not correct. Disarm works immediately. Lowering the throttle is not required. I'm lowering the throttle to finish the touchdown gracefully.

I guess on the next rainy day I will dig into what part of the programming I screwed up on. Nevertheless, I've adapted to the way it functions and really like it. Thanks for the reply! Love the videos!

I double checked my settings against what is in the two stage arming video and I can find no differences in the settings. But I volunteer I am not an expert at programming and i might be missing something right in front of my face. Perhaps you could help me find where I am wrong? According to the logic, the quad will follow the arming state of L4. L4 is a sticky of L3, which has an AND statement that requires that both L1 AND L2 be true. L2 is true only when the throttle is below -99. So I don't see where the disarm logic can be divorced from the arm logic. I can state after 100+ packs with this set up that the disarm (with my radio settings) will only function if the SF switch is triggered and the throttle is down below -99. If the throttle is lifted and the hit SF (to disarm), the quad remains running. Once I also chop the throttle, then it disarms. Again, I really like this method and have found it very useful. I am just curious where my mistake is. Thanks again!

Josh, do you ever land in a tight spot without having an approach. I have been flying FPV for about two months now and would love a switch that puts my copter in an imaginary cylinder where I can lower the throttle and disarm. My DJI drones are great at this. Obviously this FPV stuff requires more skills to fly, but a tight landing option would be cool to have.

Making tight circles is a good way to approach this situation. You can also flick autolevel mode on.

I'm new at everything! Recently I followed a video (not yours) on tuning in betaflight. Somehow my throttle curve is so low at 80% forward on the stick and I'm just leaving the ground. Your information is way above my knowledge base so if I can please explain what to do on a simple format I'd appreciate it. But, maybe it's no a simple problem. This is my first race quad that I built and used the default settings. Everything worked fine, plenty of throttle with my 2600kv motors. Now it's so sluggish and non responsive flying is painful to fly I thought to just flash the board to go back to original settings but thought to ask for help first.

@deanhuff123

I seem to be too slow at hitting the disarm once I touch down and my copter goes nuts. A new flight mode that would really help a beginner like me would be "landing mode" which would function like "Air mode with auto motor disable on first zero throttle". If this option existed, I see how it could be a very dangerous option if unintentionally enabled while flying. time to go practice landings more landings.....

My yaw value makes fast, seemingly random jumps downward in betaflight when I change my throttle value. It has really messed with my flying as it happens just as the model predicts when I try to fly. what could the issue be?
@RaceMiata
@RaceMiata 7 лет назад
Disable "Disarm motor regardless of throttle value" and flip disarm switch on final approach. As long as throttle stick is above zero, disarm action won't happen. Instead of having to worry about flipping disarm switch while correcting throttle for gentle landing, you only need to focus on the throttle stick and chop throttle at the right moment where you would have had to flip switch. Makes life much easier.
@EskilHauge

That's what I found works really well, too. My arm switch is above my right stick (flying mode2) and I just flick the switch up to disarm while in the air using my index finger and fly in for landing. Automatically disarmed when throttle killed - if I didn't crash already :-p

as always, josh, thanks for your tips, but i have a question that's been nagging me for some time. i do not enable permanent air mode by switch or BetaFlight GUI button toggle. i do have air mode activate when throttle is > 1350 (default). it's known that authority at low throttle has improved with the latest iterations of BetaFlight. so my question is: when i do a punch out (air mode gets activated) then cut my throttle to 0, is air mode deactivated? (i can't find anything in the Wiki or web.) i believe it is, and it's this improved low authority that still allows me to do acrobatic moves at 0 throttle. when i come in for a landing, my throttle is < 1350, so air mode is deactivated, and i don't have bouncing issues. enabling permanent air mode on the GUI is like the old way of turning it on by switch. why do we need permanent air mode since we have control on low authority now without it?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
+SaGô if you don't use Air Mode either by feature or switch then it is never enabled. Also, air mode activate doesn't work like you're saying. It activates the first time throttle goes over 1350 then it stays active until you disarm.

Alright, so here's the deal with the Chimera 7. Super stoked about taking it for a spin in all sorts of gnarly conditions - snow, mud, you name it. But here's the head-scratcher: the landing game. Why can't we just flip that bad boy into Normal mode and snag it mid-air? My Chimera 7 hasn't dropped into my life just yet, and this is the big mystery that's been messing with my flow. Back in the DJI FPV days, I'd rock the M mode like it was my jam, and when it was time to touch down, I'd switch to N mode and scoop it up mid-air. Kinda strange that this ain't an option with the Chimera 7, right? Can you shine a light on this landing situation for me? Much appreciated, my FPV friend!
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 6 месяцев назад
You're thinking of a DJI drone where Normal mode gives good position hold. Betaflight doesn't have position hold. It doesn't have the sensors required to do position hold accurately, like downward facing rangefinder and optical flow sensor.

Hey, thanks a bunch for dropping those insights, man; really appreciate it! Now the whole N mode thing makes way more sense to me. I'm mulling over some landing strategies 'cause, truth be told, I've got a bit of a dilemma, especially considering my penchant for flying in snowy and muddy conditions. I'm brainstorming, and here's a wild thought - what about using GPS Rescue? Picture this: wrap up the flight, bring the bird back close to home, kick in the GPS Rescue, and snag it mid-air. Crazy idea, right? But could it work? Lay it on me, what's your take? Apologies for the noob vibes; the Chimer is still on the way, and I'm soaking up all the knowledge I can. B ig thanks for schooling me, my dude!@@JoshuaBardwell

I don't see an issue with landing on airmode oO. Land as normal and disarm how hard can it be ? even the most bumpiest landings don't end up being flipovers. That's Airmode on Kiss if it even matters..?
@sarg1843
@sarg1843 7 лет назад
finally! but i'm still a little confused because you said "never" enabled if i don't toggle the GUI or activate a switch, but you then say it activates when throttle goes above 1350. it's just not permanently enabled, right? so what then is the benefit of permanent air mode during takeoff if later it will become active during flight and landing? thanks again for your knowledge!
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
If you have feature Air Mode enabled then air mode becomes active permanently when the throttle goes over 1350. If you do not have feature Air Mode or a switch mode set up, then air mode never becomes active at all.
@sarg1843
@sarg1843 7 лет назад
i'm getting there.. so by toggling on (enabling) permanent air mode in the GUI, it is NOT active during takeoff; it activates at throttle > 1350? (all this time, i've never messed with air mode settings in the CLI.)

Why do you chop the throttle when you could just disarm? After all isn't the throttle chop redundant? Also, I find it easier to put airmode on a switch and disable as I am returning to land. Then I can land with the more intuitive throttle chop followed by leisurely disarm.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
+Steve Minard I want the copter to gradually descend the latest few inches not fall. Hence lowering the throttle then flipping the switch just at the end.

I see all these guys saying to just disarm before you touch down which works ok (Especially if you disable disarm at any throttle, then it disarms as soon as you touch the ground) But why don't you just put air-mode on a switch? And that way you can turn on motor stop and when you activate air mode it automatically idles up. That way you can first of all land easier and second you can fly without idle up if you want to.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 лет назад
I don't think running with motor_stop enabled is safe. I want air mode on all the time. I don't want to give myself the extra step of activating it. It doesn't make a problem for me.
