Private Pilot lesson 1 (second flight). Flying with a new student from KPLU to KTIW for an introduction to class delta airspace. Great job on the students part for having a knee board and TAC chart on his second flight !
The wind was not all that strong but it was strong for a second flight lesson!
A good way to learn radio calls is Live ATC The more you listen the easier they are to understand. Just use it from your browser for free.

download free charts from the FAA. If you would like to look then over we are using a Seattle (sea) Terminal Area chart on this flight.

Great video. I was your controller at TIW. You cracked me up with your coffee comment (because I was drinking coffee)! That was a really good move when you corrected the student's requested departure direction from South to East! I rarely use the phraseology "on course departure approved" unless a pilot is making their departure request while I was on the line with Seattle Approach and missed the requested departure direction. Additionally, I can only use that phraseology when there are no other aircraft (potential conflicts) and my plan is just to watch you since it makes no difference to me which way you want to go. When you corrected the student to inform me you were actually requesting an east departure, it would have been better for me to say "left turn approved, Runway 1-7, cleared for takeoff." Even after over 32 years of ATC I learned something thanks to your video. Good on ya.

Dan, Your one of the major reasons I bring my students to KTIW for their solo flights. Your easy to understand (well spoken) and a great controller. Out of all the airports in the area KTIW is my favorite for Introducing students to towered operations just because of the laidback way you guys manage the airspace. Your always calm and in control even when dealing with clueless pilots. Thanks for the insight into “on course departure approved”. It was a new call for me and the student which makes for a good teaching opportunity. I don’t think you need to change any of your calls! Other airports can be frustrating in how they repeat calls trying to get clueless pilots to say the right thing. Thanks for all your help over the years! As a reward I’ll keep bringing student pilots to harass you. Seriously though thank you!

Awesome Instructor. Excellent teaching style. I'm not surprised that your student is ahead of the game....you certainly create a cool comfortable atmosphere in the cockpit that is very conducive for learning. Great job from both of y'all.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Great video! You have a very similar instructing style as my CFI. I’m currently working on landings, and this was helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed. Great video. I like your style of instruction very much. I too would love to have you as my CFI. My only complaint and it’s not that I don’t appreciate it but the background music is a bit loud and distracting.

Thanks ! I won’t add music in the future .... I had a hum in the audio I was trying to hide by annoying everyone with music. Thanks for watching !!!

Lovely video! Good editing! Horrible music starting at 20min in. It’s nice to hear just your instruction and airplane noises. :)

You might try an intro flight in the meantime. Way back in the day I did one in a float plane for $99 it was a blast. Lots of places have cheap intro flights. Thanks for subscribing!

I been wanting to do this for 20 years. Ton of flight simming but i am behind the plane just watching the video. Overwhelms me. Does it get easier? No way i would want to try tower calls that early on.

Totally gets easier ! In fact it always amazes me how 20-40 hours out the student is out soloing and doing cross country flights !

It would be helpful if you just turn off the music when you are explaining something in the video, otherwise it was great.

How are you judging the 2 mile to airport distance? Just eyeballing it?
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 5 лет назад
I was estimating based on the map 🗺...(memory ) the airspace starts four miles out so about halfway to the airport we would make the call. For every 1000 ft in elevation your cowling is about a mile out. You can test it if you have a gps as it’s height dependent but the guy that told me was like 5’8 and I’m 6-1’ and it seems to work for me. When in doubt make the call early. Its a way to keep all the ducks in a row for the controller and not actually to report a specific distance (usually). Another way is Car handles (1mile)or less Car windows (2miles ) Car vs truck (3 miles ) But this is based on average vision.
