I know a girl who does research on wild lizards at a university. this is exactly how they catch their lizards for research. i'm sure they wouldn't do it this way if it harms them

@Cheesus-Sliced

For anyone coming along after this who might see the comment heres a basic explanation: TL;DR, this is pretty much harmless to the lizards, just a little scary The slipknot and lizard basically limit the amount of force being applied to the lizard. You catch small lizards because they don't weigh much, and the only pressure being applied to them is from their own body weight (minimal and harmless). Lizards are good for this kind of activity because they naturally like to sit around, and have two responses when found; not moving and hoping they havent been seen, and bolting (makes them easier to catch, and easier to run). If you try and catch a lizard with your hand you will almost certainly do serious damage to its body, especially if you are an excited child who isn't regulating the pressure they apply. Humans can squeeze with more than 30kgs of pressure, an order of magnitude more than what is applied to the lizard while suspended, and can instantly crush their entire body. So long as you are careful in how you handle them, they may not even drop their tails (or just go for ones that don't have that mechanism). During the video they may look a bit stunned when they are suspended, this is because they are. A common response with many many animals when they know they have been caught and are unlikely to escape is to play dead, and most animals when suspended by their neck (you see the same in puppies and kittens, for example) will just go limp or stick their legs out. If they were choking, they would be panicking and flailing every time. Stop being afraid or angry because you don't understand something, and try learning about it before deciding what you think.

This was a very sweet video. It was engaging to watch and I'm sure your family appreciated how lovingly filmed and carefully put together it all was. While I fear for the little lizards because it's a game at their expense, I appreciate how you make an effort to spend time with the people you love.

honestly the people who think this harms the lizards don't own lizards. lol lizards can fall from pretty extreme heights and still be fine. Hell even mine jump from my shoulder to the floor and are more than okay. If the animals are perfectly healthy they don't won't be hurt orn harmed. It's quick, harmless, and easy. The only thing that goes through the lizards mind is "Oh shit I've been caught" as it tries to escape. No need to threaten someone's family, religious beliefs etc, just because you disagree with it. Not only is threatening people so highly immature and ignorant but also against the law and you could risk jail time for that. Think before you type, also it's hypocritical to say this is harmful as you've (other commenters ) have probably done the same thing or worse to animals growing up. let's not get too carried away.

My Father taught my brothers and I the same long blade of grass method when we were younger, we thought about ways to improve on the design and came up with something we liked and worked. we took our old fishing poles (break downs) took the top part of the fishing pole, ran some fishing line and a cinch knot at the end and it worked great! I have some great summer memories catching lizards with my brothers.

This is awesome; but use dental floss. I do this alot in my back yard (I live in Florida), and dental floss is alot softer and cannot hurt them. By the way, if anyone is planning on doing this in Florida, you'd probably be catching a Brown Anole (an invasive, yet harmless, species). if you look on their neck after you catch them, you can see a red patch; and if you pull on that a dewlap that's used for attracting mates will pop out if its a male (Which you can tell by the markings on the back, males have colums of faint dots as opposed to the zig zag on a female)!

@Cheesus-Sliced
@Cheesus-Sliced 6 лет назад
try and keep track of what way the loop goes, and rather than pulling on anything just hold the lizard and push the line back towards them. If its angled the same way as the loop it will slide back through without trouble, opening the loop again. To better understand what I mean, look at a dog choker or something like that, or just practice opening it by pushing. If you look closely at the line you can see the mechanics of it. Its not at all harmful, just be careful not to be too jerky with the line. They are only getting pressure from their own body weight, which is not nearly enough to actually do harm if they are a small lizard. If its a larger lizard try pulling sideways gently and keep them on the ground rather than suspending them. Once you have a grip on the lizard (be gentle, its easy to crush them) do not pull on the string at all in any direction. Edit: another way to explain how to push it is with a b. b is your lasso, you want the line to be at that angle. The loop comes back around and intersects the line, so push like you are pushing the straight part down

@Cheesus-Sliced
@Cheesus-Sliced 6 лет назад
its alarming, but as long as you aren't jerking the string around its not harmful. They weigh almost nothing and the only force being exerted on them if you aren't shaking the line is their own body weight. Humans can apply more than 30kgs gripping with our bare hands, which can instantly crush them. You suspend them just long enough to get a decent position to grip them, then take the string off. If they are in a poor position, I would honestly expect an excited child to crush them (hence the importance of having control over them before holding them with your hands).
