You are sure right about the safety chain. My boat slid off the trailer while coming up the ramp. Ground some off the transom. Was able to repair it but it was sure embarassing. Great video and a nice truck!

Dang brother. That’s rough, but it certainly can happen to anyone. That truck has 440,000 all-towing miles on it yet I get offers for it constantly. HUGE offers for how old and used it is. The higher the offer, the LESS I want to sell it😂😂. We are living in a very STRANGE time Danny!

I was at the Richmond, CA ramp one day. Solo launching my 22’ Tolman Skiff and on the other lane sat a 28’ something boat with keel drive, high and dry. Dude sitting in wheelchair on the dock held the bowline. It was so sad. I don’t unhook the boat from trailer until I’m at the waters edge.. nope.

At the Sewaren ramp when they pull the floating docks for off season I use my Minkota and spot lock with long rope to bulkhead to go park truck Used to beach it in sand on other side of bulkhead but storms wash up huge timber on the beach that wasn’t there before especially after storms and super high tides. Keep the remote with you and command you boat to come to you. But still keep a 75’ line on the boat it will sink below the minkota prop. Leave boat on trailer if a tug is passing waiting for waves to settle. Somehow every time I see your video using my ramp it’s never windy for you. Keep the videos coming. We love em Been out there last week marking fish by the new pipeline from Keansburg to Staten Island. April is around the corner The 1st time using minkota while not on boat was nerve wracking as I had a remote control airplane fly out of range on me as a youngster and 200 bucks flew away somewhere

Lots of good karma and advice there Mike. Personally, I never ride in the boat when it's on the trailer. That's just a golden rule I have, but you guys are careful. GREAT habit that you stopped before getting to the ramp. That's part of my ritual taking off the straps. Making sure everything is secure in the boat, here's the key in a total stress-free environment. Then there's a quarter of the time walking back-and-forth to your truck. Another thing that I've experienced with the newer trailer: it floats! which can create a whole new host of challenges if you splash deep. I don't know if you've ever seen, quite unique, the tires like 4 balloons with a mind of their own.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 3 месяца назад
Thanks brother. I really appreciate that info and your comments. I have never had my personal trailers float, but I HAVE seen it happen, especially at river launches where the trailer gets swept down stream a bit. Wooden bunks, tubular axles, aluminum frames and wheels can all add up to some unwanted buoyancy 😂. My buddy made a trailer many years ago that would float in salt, but not in freshwater. What changes did you have to make to stop the floating?

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Hey, my friend coming back at you, I appreciate you giving some constructive thoughts and think of you guys often on the water. What I do is just don't back the trailer quite as deep. I get the bow loaded and then I'll go a little deeper if I have to seems to have taken care of the issue just blew my mind the first time because I've never seen that and yes, with aluminum & 4 large tires pushing up actually makes sense & good for less weight driving on the road. Different than the good old days when our trailers were like tanks, cracking your shin & hurting for days.

Good info. Bow rope looped over winch post works pretty well too. Just has to be long enough and the ramp is steep enough. Also depends on…..

I leave my safety chain on until in the water after I saw a guy backing down and his winch either broke or it was in free spool. As soon as he backed over the apex of the ramp the boat unloaded right onto the concrete. He cranked it back up,backed it down and went on like nothing happened.

Yep. Especially with roller bunks. The worst one I saw was a 30ft brand new cruiser with a suburban full of kids and a pissed off wife. Outdrive oil running all down the ramp. Smashed gel coat. It was ugly. Took 20 of us to help him get it back on the trailer.

Thanks brother!!! Ramps can be scary for some people. I just wish more people would ask for help. I’ve offered help so many times in the nicest possible way to guys struggling and they WONT take it. I’ve asked for help before if I was in a pinch and usually ended up meeting cool people and making friends. One time my buddy dropped me off at one ramp from the water (to get the truck) and he sped out of site to a ramp 10 miles away! We were camping and he thought I just parked at the other ramp. This was before cell phones and there was 2 gallons left in the tank🤦🏻‍♂️. I asked the first boat I saw to take me to chase him down because he wasn’t making it all the way with little fuel. I made another buddy that day🤷🏻‍♂️. That ego can get you in trouble. It did me when I was younger. Thanks for your continued support brother!

That’s a crazy story mike, glad it all worked out, your right there’s a lot of people with big egos that won’t let someone help them, also what I’m noticing from Facebook posts from the area down here, is that the payed for hire guides don’t like the way most people launch here, example, people loading there boat at the ramp, not prepping the boat for launch beforehand, etc, which is understandable, but I see a lot of these guys put added stress on the guy that is new at launching, some of these pay for hire guys should motivate and not alienate. Carl

@@striper8311 you nailed it. The guys that are fortunate enough to fish every day really should spend a little effort on setting a good example at the very least. There has always been a strange competition thing in fishing that many guys can’t handle and social media exposes them as such. I know guides that yell at people all day and talk junk about every single fisherman they know. They have a sense of entitlement because they fish every day. The lower the self esteem, the worse they behave. The very best fishermen in the world just don’t do that. I have NEVER met a really great fisherman that cared that much about what everyone else is doing to the point of talking crap constantly. I saw 1 guide on a Facebook video making fun of his clients behind their backs while they were fight fish. Right there on the boat with PAYING customers. Then they post it!! That’s horrible. Guys like you and I want to leave it better than when we found it. 👍👍

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS you are absolutely right yourself buddy, i seen it up north where I fish wether it be raritan, Long Island, or at the canyon, many time we been wronged out there, with people short drifting us, mugging us while anchored over a piece black fishing, etc, we always have them the benefit of the doubt first that they just didn’t know any better, so my crew and myself would always try to educate them first instead of jumping down there throats, because alot of people just don’t know, but like you said also about the low self esteem charter guys, we have a guy here in southwest Florida that always bashes the Yankees fishing to close to him, which he has no way of knowing there Yankee snowbirds, I read his crap all the time, bashing the northerners constantly, I politely confronted him at the tackle shop I’m a steady customer at, he works there one day a week, I said to him nicely , you know I’m a Yankee, but you know the respect and etiquette I give all fisherman here, so all I’m saying there are good and bad and ignorant that may not know there doing wrong, so maybe educate them instead of name shaming, cause you must remember, 90% of these Yankees pay your bills as they are your customers all winter, so I would think before you right next time, I said it all with no disrespect, sorry I’m venting, LOL. I do the same thing in heavy current all the time. If you’re on the down current side the boat pins against the dock, up current side, just make sure no other boats are down current and float her off. The dock line will hold it. Just shorten it up if need be. 👍👍👍

Most small boats never carry 2 radios. Hell a lot of them don’t have 1. I used 2 light bursts in this video to give an example, but only one burst from the light is all that’s needed in my experience. It just can’t get any simpler than hitting a light switch one time.
