"Old School" is a state of mind, we work long and hard on the water, we don't let our egos keep us from learning. "Old School" also describes our character, we teach our children discipline and respect, we love and take care of our Wives, we honor and respect our Parents. We show appreciation to our Military, and we offer help to anyone that may need it. We fish OFTEN and with some incredible people. I have been married for over 25 years, my Wife loves me enough to leave me FREE to LIVE. Life is SHORT, If you married the right girl she will want to see you happy, and if you are watching these videos, happiness is FISHING- Our Grandfathers never asked for permission to live life, and neither do we!- Be OLD SCHOOL. Be HAPPY, Catch em all!
Hey Mike what make and model is the bait caster you guys refer to a cheap one? Is that a kastking if so what model#? You guys rock . Regular guys fishing. Just watched you wrap a rod handle with your mom helping! Awesome sauce!
Ha! Thanks brother!! It’s the Kast King Crixus. It’s a good little reel. Dunked it in saltwater 6 different times and it still works great. 🤷🏻♂️. Thanks for your support brother!! 🙏😁
Hey brother-would you or do you drop spoons at night? Is the vibration from the fluttering action enough to trigger strikes? Or do you feel they need the light reflection to get a strike?
We have actually had some great night trips with spoons. You want a darker colored spoon at night. The fish look up at swimming prey and they need to see the a dark profile against any light from above even if it’s just moonlight. I designed the team old school Smoke chrome pattern for that. It’s a darker chrome. It’s on the NICHOLS website.
How do you know what types of fish I fish for? Do you think I record everything I do for RU-vid? I do appreciate all of your comments. Helps with engagement and I get more views so thanks brother! Keep ‘em coming. 👍👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I don’t get to spend a lot of time on the water looking at mine so it helps to be able to watch the sonar videos again and again with all the explanation that you share so when I do get to look at mine it makes sense. I go through a refresher course pretty often so I don’t forget 👊
Definitely not a video for beginners! What beginners has 100k boat with 50k worth of electronics in it man a beginners gonna have a tackle bag and a rod maybe a kayak
Were you under the impression that you had to copy every single thing in this video to catch Stripers? Simrad makes a $450 fish finder that has all 3 types of sonar and chart plotter that I use in this video. I bought a used 20’ saltwater boat for $2000 that caught tons of fish. It was 18 years old, but could still float like a new boat.
Absolutely. I know it doesn’t sound smart to have yellow on white, but I swear it’s the best palette for clarity and contrast. I use some custom pallets too. If you go to my Simrad playlist and watch the last 2 or 3 short videos you can see the pallet I built. It’s basically the same colors as this one, but the white is replaced with medium blue Let me know what you think. Thanks brother!!❤️🙏👍
Sorry to ask a question I bet you gave answered already. But I can’t seem to find it. I was wondering what type of leader and strength you use on the spoons? Up here on Long Island Sound, I got smoked two weekends in a row and lost two Ben Parker spoons (and they’re not cheap!) to gorilla Blues who ate through my leader like it was kite string. Thank you for any help or guidance with potential leaders!
We use 30lb Saiko Fluorocarbon normally But if there are Blues around I’ll throw a wire leader on. You can get away with it more since you keep the spoon moving. Just a 6” piece of 30lb wire will help a lot. 👍👍
Thanks brother!!! I use 10’ radius 5/8 mesh. Used to use larger mesh, but we were getting full Christmas trees too often. When mixed bait sizes are around 100 gill-netted baits are not good for anyone involved 😆.
I haven’t fished THERE, but I did Wallenpaupak a few times. I know there’s herring there. If there are Gizzard Shad present the spoon will definitely work👍👍 we caught fish on spoons in over 8-10 Striper lakes with Gizzard Shad present. 👍👍👍😁
By the way brother I love your videos You seem very knowledgeable about those fish if you ever get to Raystown lake look us up I would love to see how you tackle this one
I find 10ft radius to be the best for 99% of the bait we net. If you’re shorter than 5’8-ish go with 8’. Taller than 6’4-ish go with 11’ However the 10 is easy to handle in the boat has large coverage area and is the max size for beginners and it’s in the sweet spot for myself and all my guys. If I only want adult Bunker I used to use 1-1/4” square mesh (not stretch mesh). If you want to net several sizes use 5/8. A 1-1/4 net gill-nets 5-6” bunker and Shad and you need to start pinching heads off the hundred stuck baits in your Christmas tree 😂
Not really, you can tell when they move up and down some, but not the direction they are moving to with this type of sonar. Side scan shows you direction a bit more, but the new live sonar like Simrad’s Active Target shows you exactly where the fish are going.
Thanks brother!!! This code will save you some clams off any of their stuff. Smedley1;Their baits look boring, but they just CATCH. OVER AND OVER. The scent is Mermaid’s milk. Please tell me what you think after you try it. Www.hookupbaits.com ThanksMilo!!!🙏🙏🙏
Thanks brother! Each processor is different depending on a few things, one being wattage. Roughly 800-2000+ft You want LOW CHIRP. MEDIUM CHIRP 0-800ft (best 20ft-600ft) HIGH CHIRP 0-400ft. (Best 0-200).
Depends on the size of the boat. I was able to make a much smaller ring with a 22’ boat over 25’. Throw the wheel over 75%ish. If you turn 100% to the right the ring will start ok, but then the stern starts to go around but the bow almost stops turning and just the stern stays in the circle. So basically you will run over 1/3 of the circle you just made. With my smaller boat I used more of a square just for that reason. Hope that makes sense.
I'm getting ready to buy my first fish finder and came across your video. Not only did it answer all my questions about what you see on the screen but it was described in a clear and concise manner. Great video!!! I also don't object to the title. When it comes to fish finders I am a dummy.
Never heard of this trick. Can’t tell ya how many schools of bunker I throw on with 100s in them and maybe get one or 2 a throw. This is game changer. Does this work with other bait as well? Here in Florida like threadfin, mullet, greenback those sorts. Thanks again
Thanks brother! It’s excellent when pretty much any bait is near the surface over deep water. It’s easier in smaller boats where you can make a quick tiny circle. 👍👍
