This video is about How to lay a composite deck. I am using a new wide plank from Composite Prime to build my deck outside my summer house in my garden.
I show you how I set out the job using some basic lined paper, then cut all the pieces needed to complete the deck, it was then a simple job to install the deck using the great clips supplied by Composite Prime
I show you how I mark and cut rips and scribes and the various tools that can be used for the job
I finished the deck perimeter with a matching flat fascia screwed to my structure
The job was really enjoyable and looks fantastic

Great job as always.. I did a massive composite decking job in the summer for a client in Essex.. Hottest time of the year.. And when I set out the deck and started laying the board the client wasn't happy about the big expansion gaps.. That was until the sun hit the boards and the gap disappeared.. You really need that gap.. Also I had to start about 6am so I could get a fair bit done before the sun and heat kicked in.. Cheers.

Interesting Jim that is can expand that much would that be approx 5mm per board ?. What is the composite board like when water lays on top or gets wet is it like an Ice rink ? Another question about health what about off-gas unhealthy fumes thought that composite board can give VOC fumes even more when sun beats down (there is whole list of VOC that is unhealthy for you Cancer is one of them among others.)
@jimcraiggeezer
@jimcraiggeezer 3 года назад
@@dickdoc3337 expansion is as per instructions.. It pays to follow the data sheet from your particular material.. I was surprised to see it expanding the full 5/7mm (it was 30c plus though) .the board I have used is a nonslip board but I have seen some algae in very damp and shady areas.. Easy to clean though... No idea about the voc sorry.

Hi Robin, I’m using this installation as my go to guide for installing some composite decking at home, albeit a much smaller area! One question I have is to do with the board placed on the bifold door sill at 25:24. I know you’ve left a 10mm gap between edge of the board and the door, but is water still able to drain out under that board despite it been stuck to the sill? I’m trying to get the same flush affect with the door threshold. Thanks!!

I particularly like the gaps at the butt ends of each board, gives it a nice uniform dark line along the lengths and ends although I accept it was a necessity anyway for expansion, also like the way you have the grain running in opposite directions on each row, I spotted your attention to detail there Robin 👌

Hi Robin, great video, I really enjoyed watching that. I built a composite deck a year ago with a similar layout to you. Question: Do you have an opinion on setting up a fall? I have found my boards stay perpetually wet, I suspect because they are perpendicular to the fall direction. I know they wont rot as they are composite, but nonetheless is annoying they are wet when the rest of the garden has dried up. I'm tempted to lift the deck boards up , nog it out at 400mm centres and then put them back in parallel to the fall, but would be great to get your thoughts.
@ukconstruction

I did Run some limited falls but my deck is elevated and gets a decent breeze across it so the water seems to dissipate fairly quickly, sounds like your Idea to switch the direction may be a nice idea fro you, just more work!!!!

I've been waiting on this part for a while. Having used composite prime myself I was curious about your fascia/close off detail. I personally found the clip system frustrating, I've used better. The boards themselves were of nice quality but the fascia system I also found frustrating. The finished job was nice but it's not my favourite system to use (ultrashield is the system I usually recommend)
@molydood

just checked out ultrashield - the system looks identical to the composite prime system so not sure I understand why you prefer it?
@R08mky

@@molydood the clip system, the screws are already inserted into the clip (they also do a 1mm spacer aswell) also they have a locking clip (1 per board) that stops any unwanted creep/expansion. The boards themselves aren't massively different but I've had far less problems (dare I say better quality) with the ultrashield. They have changed there facia boards recently to the thinner style of composite prime but a much broader board (170 if I remember correctly) it's also double sided, both sides have grained finish but one is a much deeper grain

Did consider "Ecodeck" here in Australia. However it looks like brown plastic and has no character. It will also become scuffed and dull. That reason plus the concerns here as a fire risk. The whole deck could turn into a boiling hot mass of molten plastic. Not sure if that is fire proof as you can get a fire resistant option. Anyway it looks neat and matches the house nicely. I ended up using a hardwood Merbau. Its fire rated and lasts forever if properly cared for.

Good vid, good detail ... HOWEVER, should have staggered the joints throughout the build. Same as on yachts, Random butt-ends look neater than joints in a line as that exaggerates the black-lining. On the narrower section you have no joints at all, so irregular pattern.

Fantastic finish Rob. I am currently planning my composite deck and having watched this I have a query I hope you (or anyone else!) can shed some light on. Numerous carpenters have advised me against levelling my deck above the bifold door cill like you have done here and how I plan to do it. I really want a level flush finish like this. I am being told it is not good for drainage of water? I am thinking what their problem is when the cill is obviously watertight, the water can drain through the expansion gap and down underneath the decking. Surely???! Also. The polymer adhesive you use, how does that cope when the board expands under the sun? I love watching your videos - such great attention to detail and always calmly and well explained. Keep up the good work!

Give ya one tip. Before cutting the boards lay them all out on a flat surface exposed to the same conditions. These boards are prone to expansion so when stacked in the sun you might go for a break, come back and cut the top board which has expanded in the heat and then cut the others to the same length. Issues when they all return to the same temperature...

Brilliant job, quite the picture! Having done some repairs on a composite decks, first off you really do need the support structure to have the proper spacing or everything will sag. Secondly be super certain about how you manage the water flow, runoff, gaps etc, because these boards will wick moisture into to your structure like nothing else. Third the varieties I've seen can warp pretty badly when there are large temp/moisture differences, I would definitely use more than enough clips to hold it all down. Getting a board out after several years is doable, but with all the accumulated crud and the boards having gotten warped, I ended up having to pick up a whole area in order to fix it. Still, very doable but replacing an individual board is not super feasible.

Hi Connie, as a Carpenter I never rely on the ends of material that is supplied to be perfect or undamaged so I always allow to trim a little off, also here where I have runs that are over two and a half boards long with different start and stop points allowing for the building perimeter and using a joint that lines up means that there will be cut boards, sometimes we can work to standard lengths, hope that helps and thanks for watching!

I have a similar project coming up, but here in Oz, where the expansion on any form of composite is huge 5/8 mm on 5.4 lengths on hot sunny days.

@ukconstruction Год назад
Hi Tim, we generally have mild temperature swings either way here in the UK and the boards are only 3.6m, I tend to try to still maintain a gap between but joints wherever possible as the boards do as you suggest expand and contract a fair bit we leave about 5mm gap on joints and where I mitred the facia boards on the external corners I kept these touching, I did notice that they did push against one another in the heat but then settle back when the temperature settled, it is a really good thing to plan for the expansion in line with any manufacturers guides, good luck with the project... ping me a pic on instagram when done!!!

It's a shame there aren't clips to hold the sidings on rather than screw through the composite boards.

Very nice job Robin. Can you tell me where you sourced the dark grey facing to the sides of the deck I think you called it plastic plywood. Wishing you and your family Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Hi Robin, amazing job. Loved watching you work. I noticed there were a couple of bits of work done between vid 2 & 3, most notably an extra board booted to and spaced 10mm from the original board on the longer fascia front. Just wondered why that extra board was added? Cheers!

Robin, can you explain a bit about drainage? Your joists seem to be touching the ground at certain points. Will they not be damp? Don’t think you addressed drainage in your four videos. Thanks

Hi Mate, my frame is at least 150mm from the ground at the closest point, if I was making contact with the ground I would use class 4 treated timber as this is manufactured to be in contact, my frame is completely suspended on ground screws
