In this "how to" video I will show you how to lay a shed base using some reclaimed paving slabs.
The first step to the shed base is to make sure the sub base for the slabs is going to be strong enough to support the shed, in this instance I have used MOT type 1 to a depth of 4-6 inches compacted using a wacker plate. The MOT type 1 will ensure the finished shed base will be solid and not move with the changes in the seasons.
The next step is to mark out the shed base area using a string line to get the slabs in a straight line and to give you guidence whilst laying the slabs. Once you are ready to start the shed base create a concrete mix to lay the slabs on, follow my other video for a quick tutorial

Lay the slabs for the shed base one at a time making sure they are level as you go and check the overall level over a few slabs using a long spirit level. If you need to cut any slabs follow my other video for a quick tutorial.

That's brilliant to hear. Just take your time, and you will be fine. A good tip is to ensure the sub base is nice and firm before attempting to lay the slabs.

Kudos on another easy to follow and instructive video mate. Going to be helping the old folks with their 10’ x 6’ garden shed this Spring/Summer. Decided against using a permanent cement base on that part of the lawn, in the event the shed has to be disassembled. Be grateful for any advice on constructing a non-permanent, but stable, shed base/sub-base using a suitable combination of gravel and paving slabs? Much obliged. Best regards.

You will really need some sort of sub base like mot type 1 to a depth of 4-6 inches. Without this stable base everything will eventually move. I have seen slabs laid over soil on a sand base but they won't stay level for long.

Great video thanks! I know post Crete would be a more expensive method but would it be ok to use this instead for quickness? It would be for big shed? Also do you think slabs should be slightly higher than rest of ground for water run off and a bit of air flow under the shed?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 5 месяцев назад
Hi, don't use postcre for the base as it's not designed for that. You can use quick setting cement in the mix, but be warned it does set In about 10 mins. Ad for rain run off I would definitely sit the base slightly higher

Heavy them old slabs. Can lay just with sharp sand if subbase is sound. I prefer a lump hammer and block of wood for knocking down. Dot and dab cement blobs never last and hollow areas can be broken. I'm extending a new build just now builders laid out loose on screed sharp sand.

Would you advise to lightly wet the bottom of the slab to help the cement mix stick?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
+wayne wentworth These are british standard slabs and have a rippled base to help with adhesion. For different slabs you could use a SBR bonding agent that is available from most DIY stores. Hope that helps?

What else can be used for levelling before slabs are laid , please?
@FixitwithFowler

You really need a solid base like hard-core or mot type 1. This provides a stable foundation for the slabs.

@@FixitwithFowler what is in the mix of concrete directly under the slabs? And can you just use sand and cement?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
Hi, its a ballast and cement mix to make concrete. There is a short video on my channel of the exact mix. You can use a mix of sand and cement so long as you have a good base first. Hope that helps

Is there a rule to work out how much concrete you'd need to buy per metre square?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 5 месяцев назад
I mix mine at a ratio of 5 parts ballast to 1 part cement and use this under the slabs. I just mix it as I go but I'm sure you can find calculator online

Better off using a full bed mix of sharp and building sand easier to level and avoids any voids in the bed.
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
I would, but i needed to build the ground up as i went, and unfortunately, a mix of building sand and sharp sand wouldn't be strong enough.

Where can you get the sub base from?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 2 года назад
Hi, you can get the mot 1 from most builders merchants or wickes. Just make sure you install it on membrane to a depth of 4 inches!
@lildeanc
@lildeanc Год назад
@@FixitwithFowler what’s the membrane for?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
The membrane is a semi permeable weed membrane. This allows water to pass through but stops the migration of the soil/mot type 1. The Mot type 1 gains its strength by the smaller and larger particles being compacted together. Without the membrane, the smaller particles get washed into the soil, and the mot type 1 sinks into the soil and creates a weak base

That's cheating by extending an existing base.

@@FixitwithFowler I am about to start a slab after being abandoned by my brother who said he would do it. I am trying to work out how to do the first reference slab and line up the rest from that. You did a good job there 👍
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 7 месяцев назад
@DWAIN61, the first thing is to get the height you want the base to be at. Then, use a string line to get a straight edge. Just take your time and remember you can always lift the slab and relay it (within an hour or so) if it's really bad.
