A concrete shed base is strong, level, and durable. It won’t move, and therefore the shed won’t either. It is made to measure for the shed, very slightly bigger in all dimensions, and very slightly raised above ground level.
A concrete shed base is probably the strongest and most durable option for a shed to stand on.

It is a very good book for beginners as well as for those that are already into ru-vid.comUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt A very good basic ebook to keep as a reference too. I like it and the way the subject matter is presented. It has humor and that helps with the reading.

Great vid. A builder's tip for mixing concrete is to cut the cement bag in half. Then throw in as many shovels of ballast as needed to go with the half bag of cement. Saves faffing around filling buckets.

@davidfagerberg9283

There should be rebar in the middle of the slab. And yes, you can take the frame off in 1-2 days but wait 2 weeks before building on it
@XANF2
@XANF2 3 года назад
Im not too familiar with the use of cement, but why would it need rebar? Surely the concrete is in full contact with the subbase. There wouldn't be any substantial pressure points. Concrete is also amazing in compression. It is only weak against lateral forces, which is why rebar is used.
@XANF2
@XANF2 2 года назад
@Harry Wang you could achieve that by using concrete anchor bolts through the shed and into the slab. Tell me why that isn't suitable "dumbass"?
@XANF2
@XANF2 2 года назад
@Harry Wang I was hoping for some form of intelligent reply, not something a child would say. Tip for next time, don't call people a dumbass for asking a reasonable question, especially when you have an extremely limited understanding yourself, and I mean extremely limited. Good job dumbass 👏
@paulstone7655
@paulstone7655 2 года назад
It's just a medium duty shed with 3" concrete base (plus 3" hardcore subbase which is more than most sheds get), not a garage with car loads. No rebar needed.

Thank you very much for your comment. A couple of suggestions: ask a local store for advice, and at the same time ask them if they accept returns of any surplus materials. Another option is to do a web search for something like a ‘concrete calculator’ and try and find one that gives advice for all the materials needed (and not just cement).

How much were the materials for this and what is the size? I need to make a 4x6m one for a garden room (that will be a gym that needs to hold 200kg cable machine) - I guess the same principles apply? Also, right now I have a 2.5m2 shed with a concrete base (which I will move elsewhere) - can I build the frame around this one (it is probably the right height) or do I need to crunch it up and start fresh?

You really need a sub base to deal with water drainage and movement. If you don't you will likely see shifting and cracking. Especially if you live in an area where the ground freezes.

See the link for some cheaper alternatives to a concrete shed base - but these are likely to move with time potentially causing problems for the shed above (whereas a concrete shed base over a sub base should be a permanent solution). www.allotmentbook.co.uk/allotment-sheds/#cheap_solutions

Ideally, a thin sharp sand layer over the hardcore to protect the DPC sheet. This goes on top of the hardcore before the concrete goes in which prevents damp rising up from the ground (as it does) into your base.

If there are plumbing pipes to run then you can run them underneath the slab before it is poured over them(use a vapor barrier over the piping, and gravel over that) otherwise you can also route the pipes around the slab (takes more work and pipe matierial but it is doable)

My local hire shop has different weights of plate compactor - but even the lightest is pretty heavy - ideally needs two people to lift it. It may be cheaper to buy the tool I showed in the video, or ask around to see if anyone you know has something similar? Flattening the stones is important to prevent movement in the future that can damage the base.

once assembled, can this shed be moved?
@AllotmentBook

it depends on the shed - for the shed in the video, I would disassemble it to move.

Someone sold me that the base should be set at a slope to help with water run-off, but yours is flat and makes sense that it is flat.... can you think of any instances where you might have to have the base at a slight slope...? TIA

my base is only slightly larger than the base of my shed, therefore there is no place for rainwater to settle (as the rain falls on the roof of the shed and drains into water butts). However, if the shed stands on a larger area like a patio, it is common for the patio to have a slight slope to drain water away (ie away from a house).

Why no rebar? Just curious.

For the weight of the shed and because i am not storing heavy machinery in it, the base did not need the extra strength of rebar.

You should always place mesh wire or rebars for reinforcement.
