You did fine young man. Don't listen to these youtube welders. I been welding for 30 years. Personally I prefer a flat smooth weld as opposed to the "whip" style. Nice job little brother.

I use to fix coal train cars for Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad, our welds wouldn`t pass inspection unless they were flat and smooth. Replacing a gusset, welds could only be to the edge of the gusset to the coal car, if it went over the edge even a fraction of a mm, it had to be redone. But working for B & C steel building red iron beams for buildings they had to be like these welds in this video. So I guess both work depending on, if its your own project and what you prefer.

That what I was going to say, I been welding 40 years and hardly ever try to make ‘ dimes’ . I just make nice even smooth welds. Even TIG welding aluminum I just make nice smooth welds. Sometime I make what look like the ‘ dimes ‘ and go over it and smooth it out. If you are worried about making ‘ dimes’ you are probably not focusing on the penetration and even blending of the metals. Dimes aren’t everything.

They do it for the pay and the attention. Always about attention and pay for the human species. Its always all about hit the like and subscribe (so I can get paid) instead of just making video and post it to help others learn. Now its all about join my group , get me likes. There are a few that do it to teach only but then they get the you tube paid syndrome.Covid made a entire generation of so called professional social media and video poster that all BEG for the same hey subscribe and hit the like icon BS...Even have posting videos where they bait subscribe viewers into sending them stuff/money , then claim oh thank you so much you didn't have to.Watching the videos you heat them bait by oh I dont have this or that and wish I did it would make it so much easier and then bam low and behold a sheep has sent them it. Happens more often in repair videos but bet it does just as much in welding ones too.Humans always trying to get anything in any manner they possible can off others.

I'm just messin with ya. Nobody believes that you know how to weld. I mean, that's why you're here right? If you knew anything about welding, you would know that those are decent welds. By the way, never start off with the amount of years that you've been doing something. It's universally understood by anybody who is intelligent that people who introduce themselves that way are trying to prove themself. Pros don't do that because they don't have to.

As a newcomer long ago I got a job building up bearing journals on printing press rolls in a positioner. I figured out that I would never see ANYTHING if I didn't pull my head back and weld with my out stretched arm using the reflected light from the arc to see thru my suddenly non smoked up lenses. The amount of weld pros that say to concentrate on the puddle amazes me. If the settings and travel speed are right just a frequent glance confirms nice even fill. I spend more time looking ahead in my direction of travel so I stay in the groove on light stuff and so my cover passes look great and straight once the weld prep is no longer there to guide you. 36+ years welding with no flashlights taped to my hood and no soapstone lines to guide because I CAN SEE! Simply by using the reflected light of the arc rather than staring at that bright molten puddle all day long.

All three techniques will deliver different weld profiles. With the push pull method you’ll have more of a concave profile. The cursive e method will produce more of a convex puddle as well as the half moon method. Personally I use push pull 98 percent of everything I do unless I’m tigging. But very helpful content brother to those that are learning.

I agree with you 100%. I am 75 and my hands now do a self-inflicted oscillation. But each item and each thickness is approached differently. I was certified to weld Airplanes, Nuke canopy seals, 3/4 inch plate and Aluminum, Stainless (I had my own business) and steel. Also brazing most any brass, bronze, etc. Now that I am retired, I usually just weld for friends and grandson.....and his friends Mountain Crawlers, etc.

I use the “cursive e” method but at the bottom, I’ll hold it there for a second and then continue. Let’s your weld flatten out a little bit, especially on corner joints. The back and forth motion is really good for filling larger gaps too.

Bryan, good video Thanks brother. A little thing I learned years ago-convert the thickness of the metal to decimal-that is 1/8inch is .125 so that is the amps to start with. Drop it a little,perhaps 90amps, to test it then increase it as you go. An old lad back in the 60s told me that. He gave me my first Lincoln buzz box and yes she still works.

You covered all the basics and did a good job. There are; like in any profession...the greats aswell as a few truly gifted. Problem with some professions like welding is that everyone is a "LEGEND" and has suggestions/answers/better ways of doing whatever. The largest percentage of those critiquing are only "LEGENDARY" in their own mind. Keep at it

I like your last method best. I’m no welding expert but have been welding my own projects for years. I find the half moon or going side to side of the two parts you’re welding gets better penetration with a mig setup. It’s easy to get a pretty looking bead with a mig that has very little strength. Just my 2 cents worth. Good job man

Great work! I been welding since 1978 and my teacher in 1975 - 1977 was a atomic pipe welder, on of the best! Since 1988 i have my own shop and still doing welding work, 90% at containers and compactors. Sometime welding pipes too with 3 mm wall! We all welders can learn more!

I was told the most important things are clean material, proper ground, heat, penetration and the right amount of fill and spread. The final step is making it look like pretty. Have you ever cut and inspected your welds? That would be a cool thing to do to show everyone the full process. Your welds look great!

I've got the Northern Tool clutch 140sa which is the model below his I really like it I picked it up for 150 though on clearance before version II so sadly you won't get that price but it was still a very well-reviewed welder. They had some dud issues with version 1 but it was either cradle death or everybody loved it. I haven't read much about version2 to as I don't want to tempt myself and would probably go with a step up to 240 but it might be a good place and price point for you to look

I'm trying to be a hobby welder, have the equipment but lack the skill. Your welds look fantastic, your instruction is clear and to the point and your video editing really makes for a great tutorial. Thank You!

Appreciate You and your technique...........I am among several friends who are CWI's (Certified Welding Inspectors) and /or seasoned certified welders. This is one of a few competent ways to gmaw weld. Good Job.
