In this video I show you how to lay flagstone. I show how to spread mud, lay the stone, grout, and wash down the patio. I give lots of tips and tricks on laying a flagstone patio. Hopefully this video helps anyone trying to figure out how to lay flagstone.

Not to be the ‘keep off my grass guy’ I did this work in DC area for 10 years, I found that the way you lay it with wet mud; the joints crack fast. These are the type of jobs where you will be back tuck pointing & repairing (every masons least favorite gig) If you use a dry mix of mortar 25 shovels of sand Bag of Portland 5~ gallons of water And the most vital part Use about half a bag of Portland in a 5 gallon bucket mixed with water to a smoothie texture .. this is used on the base to let the mortar bond to the base ,, add mortar to desired height & then add slurry to ensure the flagstone with become almost bonded to the base I know I went on the ramble to long, but this way the flagstone projects last way longer

Looks great! I use the flooring spacers as well or carpenters pencils. Do you use Mega Flex for the mud or regular mortar? I use MegaFlex as it has polymers in it for temperature fluctuations. Great presentation buds🤘Ontario Canada 🇨🇦

Great video man. Really informative. I think I can lay the stone myself however I don’t know anything about how to create the mud or how long it takes for it to dry. Does this all need to be done in one day or can you leave and come back? What’s the working time on the mud? Also did the mud in the cracks turn white after it dried?

For the mud experiment with small batches first, I like to start with the mud kinda firm and if I don't like it add a little water till you find out the consistency you like and easy to work. You can come back to it when ever just clean your edges before you finish for the day. The next day should be OK with light traffic but 2 is better, also depends on motar thickness.

good job.. may I ask why the 2 long running joints. I know the pattern you used was for a walkway but it's only a running bond pattern. what state are you in?

I was going to say the same thing. No straight lines longer than 4' to 6' in any masonry other than brick and block. At least that's what Kevin the Mason learned in 25+ running. I do give the kid credit though, he's got heart. He needs a good teacher though.

You should also explain what the "mud" is? Thinset mortar? Regular mortar? A mixture of mortar, sand and ???

You're the rookie. You'd be wasting time, money bonding mortar to flagstone plus you would stain it so bad...it wear away eventually but homeowner would notice right away. it's very porous that mortar will not break off that stone. However, the agent should be between the mortar and the cement slap. That is where the water will collect and ice may compromise the bond.

You should put a floor cleaner machine on their give yourself a lil less work they're cheap enough to rent
