How to lay concrete wall copings on top of a wall. In this video I will demonstrate how to do all the processes to lay wall copings including laying out a bed, putting primer on the copings, laying the coping, pointing the coping and cutting the coping. Concrete copings are used to decorate the top of a brick or block wall but also provide weather protection by shedding water from the top of the wall.

Nice job Sam . In the last while iv started to slurry the backs of wall copings as well much better job. I noticed there was no throating on the underside of them .

Hi Sam what a great tutorial. Step by step instead of 100mph videos. Please can I ask a question. I can't seem to see the ready mixed mortar sealant at screwfix or Toolstation. My wall is only 11 coping stones 600 x 240. Do l really need it?
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
Hi Steven, thanks for the kind comment! You definitely need a primer for the copings as with them being so smooth and on the back and not very heavy they won’t bond to the mortar properly. You’ll find some in somewhere like Topps tiles maybe or Wickes. It’s definitely worth spending the £20 ish for the bay as they’ll just come off over time otherwise

Can you tell me mate how much roughly to cement one grey concrete flat concrete Coping Stone back on as it came lose for cement and the primer you mention and labour cost ? Size is roughly same size as yours in vid but flat and it is an older Wall not new and first Stone on Wall as you go in Drive Way and a small wall 2 brick thick brick thick and 2 feet high ? Thanks
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
Hi, I can’t really tell you how much but I can tell you how long I’d allow: Allow an hour to do the work. Shouldn’t take you that long but you need a minimum charge of an hour to cover travelling etc. A small bag of sand (those handy bag 25kg ones) you won’t use it all but that’s the smallest you can get. You can buy ready mix mortar in bags which may save you getting sand and cement. The primer only comes in 10 kg bags smallest size but you won’t need that much. SBR and cement you can mix together to make a primer, you could put this on the wall before you put your bed down and then underneath the slab before you put it on the wall then it will be stuck good. Hope this helps!

Hi Sam, thanks for the video. I’m assuming it’s a soft(building) sand in the 4:1 cement mix, rather than a sharp sand?

Hi Sam...just watched your video on laying copings. One question for you regarding the pointing of them. Would the pointed joint benefit from having a waterproof mortar rather than just 4 to 1 normal mortar mix?? I am going to lay copings on top of a retaining wall, that is going to be rendered. I am wanting to reduce any water that might seep from above and get behind the render causing blowing / cracking issues !!??
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Месяц назад
Hi, thanks for watching! Personally I would never use waterproof mortar on the joints as I don’t think it would make much difference but it wouldn’t do any harm if you did. Have you damp proofed behind the retaining wall? Liquid dpm on the back of the wall, land drain in the bottom with an exit for it then clean stone on top. That’s what will keep the water from seeping through
@davidglynn112
@davidglynn112 Месяц назад
Hi Sam, thanks for your reply. Appreciate your advice on the pointing great stuff that!! I have done all the things you mentioned behind the retaining wall...drain at the bottom, liquid Dpm and a Dpm membrane, ground membrane and clean stone. Am going to fit new copings that are wider than the wall with drip channel in them, was unsure whether the joints needed waterproofing you see. Original copings were not enough overhang and joints not pointed. That along with lack of Dpm, drainage stone and drain contributed to render blowing. I've found your videos and info really useful...thanks for helping out us Novices, it's very good of you.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Месяц назад
@@davidglynn112 sounds like you’ve done a very thorough job! People build retaining walls but don’t do the drainage part properly a lot of the time. That drip channel will help massively too. Thanks, glad you’ve found the videos useful!
