primer slurry test which is best

Here are the steps to apply a slurry primer:
1. Clean the surface: The concrete surface must be clean and free of any debris, dirt, or oil. Use a pressure washer or a scrub brush to clean the surface thoroughly.
2. Mix the slurry: Mix the slurry primer according to the manufacturer's instructions. The consistency should be similar to that of pancake batter.
3. Apply the slurry: Use a brush or a roller to apply the slurry primer to the concrete surface. Apply it evenly, making sure to cover the entire surface.
4. Allow the slurry to dry: The slurry primer should be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the topcoat or overlay.
5. Apply the topcoat or overlay: Once the slurry primer is dry, you can apply the topcoat or overlay. The slurry primer will help the topcoat or overlay adhere better to the concrete surface.
Slurry primers are commonly used in concrete resurfacing projects, such as when applying a decorative overlay or a stamped concrete finish. They help to create a strong bond between the concrete surface and the topcoat or overlay, ensuring a long-lasting and durable finish.

Thanks Scott....well worth doing that test. I'm doing my first porcelain patio shortly and this video really helped break down the jargon and terminology. I like the real-world advice too about which mix will go off faster. That's hassle you don't need when you're trying to take your time to lay the tiles right and doing angle cuts, etc.

Another test could have been a wet tile. A dry tile will suck the moisture out of the bed resulting in badly cured mortar at the interface. This is one of the primary reasons for priming. Essentially this is a rigid form of pavement construction where the base bed and surface are required to act together to resist deformation so the integrity of the bond is critical. As is the need to have a sealed impermeable joint between units. As opposed to flags or blocks which are flexible pavements which can tolerate movement and moisture. In high load public environments the only difference is that the paver will be thicker and a full concrete slab is added over the sub-base to guarantee rigidity. Great test tho. Looking at cost, marshalls is extortionately expensive kidology whereas a gallon of pva will cost 5 quid and is just as effective.
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 2 года назад
If you used the sbr you would still have to add cement and make a paste for that extra stickiness. Sbr mix drys really fast unlike the Marshalls primmer lasts all day 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

PVA will dry and then rehydrate when wet so it can be the weak link. for this reason you would have to use waterproof PVA. But PVA is a plastic so the SBR is better as a product as its a rubber that does not rehydrate or degrade.

@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 года назад
I’m glad I did that video it and so many questions I had myself and the marshals primer is my favourite because of the retardant. I always use a squirt of fairy liquid for my mixes and have been for over 30 years and it’s all still standing 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
@bernardfender5147
@bernardfender5147 3 года назад
@@tidybrickslandscaping honestly, one of the worst things you can do is add detergent to mortar!! The reason for this is the size of the air bubbles in the cement paste. Fairy will make a beautiful fluffy mortar but the air is entrapped not entrained meaning there are fewer, bigger bubbles. Ultimately this reduces strength, freeze/thaw resistance and durability. If you can, just add a splash of plasticiser instead it doesn't take any longer than adding washing up liquid!!, (but SBR is still the best). 😁😁. Stay safe my friend 🙂

Hi mr tidy bricks i love your vids ive just finished my patio following your tips and it has come out beautiful, thanks so much for your vids. I have a major problem i used sbr/cement slurry for the back of porcelain slabs and ive got some ontop of the slab and i cant get it off ive jetwashed the hell out of it but it wont budge please help me.
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 года назад
Easy solution is patio cleaner aka brick acid you won’t damage the porcelain it’ll fizz for a while that’s the cement burning when it stops fizzing it’s good to go. Only put on enough completely cover the splash mark and wash off with water when your done. Hey presto 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Could I lay indian sandstone onto an already solid morter bed with slurry? I'm guessing not
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 2 года назад
You could yes very possible but I would probably suggest having a slight bit of tolerance prime the existing mortar bed prime the tile and then just add enough cement throughout to give you a bit of tolerance because any uneven surface will not allow it to bond properly 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

PVA isn’t waterproof and will fail when soaked, SBR is a waterproof PVA so there you have it, you can only use SBR outside. I can’t comment on the other primer but will probably be a waterproof PVA.
