Having an insulated 4th layer limits flexibility - having a 2nd insulation layer under her down jacket and a non-insulated hard shell as a 5th layer will give her more options, if e.g. it rains on warmer days or if she’s working really hard in rain. This will need her to buy a larger size down jacket. As noted by others, her clothes are too tight especially her 4th layer, which will compress her down jacket when zipped up, reducing its insulating properties. With her 4-layer system, her 4th layer needs to be larger than the one she’s chosen.

@swathichatrapathy9347

hi Surjayan, one trekking pole would suffice. Because the trails are not evenly laid out, there are several sections where you may need a free hand to hold onto something. So it's good to have one hand free.

@swathichatrapathy1058
@swathichatrapathy1058 6 лет назад
Hi Haseena, Bhrigu Lake will have too much snow in April. You can't really do the trek until June. I know of someone who went off-season (April) and it turned out to be a near-expedition. You can read about his experience here - indiahikes.com/bhrigu-lake-offseason-april-trekker-blog/ Bhrigu Lake opens up in June (even then there's snow!). You can manage with three warm layers and accessories. That should do. :)

Hi Swathi, I am going for the Chadar trek in February first week. Is it really windy up there? How many layers do you suggest for this trek?
@swathichatrapathy9347
@swathichatrapathy9347 6 лет назад
Hi Akhil, Chadar is very very cold in February, with temperatures dropping to - 25 degrees. You'll need at least 7 layers to tackle this kind of cold. Double up on sleeping bags. Double up on gloves, you could use two pairs of gloves -- woollen and synthetic gloves. Scarf, woollen cap, woollen socks, all of these are a must.

Swathi!! Just let me know if this list of layers would suffice for a trek to Kedarkantha in MARCH. 1. A pair of thermal shirts and pants 2. 3 tshirts and 2 trek pants (including what I'll wear) 3. 1 tights for comfy purposes 4. 1 fleece and down jacket (without hood) 5. 1 wind jacket (is this mandatory?)
@swathichatrapathy9347
@swathichatrapathy9347 7 лет назад
Hi Lekha those layers will be enough. And a wind-proof jacket is a must. The wind chill factor plays a huge role in making you feel much colder than it actually is. An insulated wind-proof jacket will definitely help.

Hi Swathi, I'm going to Goecha-la in November(first week) this year. How many layers would you recommend for the trip?
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 5 лет назад
Hi Vishvanath, take a minimum of 4 layers. The Goechala region tends to get extremely cold in November (which is partly why we don't run the trek at all in November). So carry thermals and 4 layers to protect yourself. Make sure you have a hollow-fill jacket / padded jacket that will protect you from strong winds.

It absolutely applies to cold countries as well. Any cold region you go to, layering is what most locals do as well.
@atrijitdas1704

The only major difference from personal experience would be with the choice of base layer. For trekking, where I know during the day I'm actively moving, I want my base layer to not just be warm but also help keep me dry. So material that absorbs and quickly helps evaporate the sweat is ideal. Whereas if I'm just a student in canada, I wouldnt necessarily need material like merino wool there as I dont have to worry about a lot of sweating when I'm just walking to the subway or bus stand perhaps

Im no expert but is something wrong with this? Again maybe its just me being very new to this stuff, but she has 3 insulating layers? Isnt the point of the fleece and down to eliminate the need for a insulated outer layer?

Besides waterproofing, it must be remembered that cold winds are colder than a windless day and the former is to be found aplenty in the Upper Himalayas. A windproof jacket will keep you much insulated.
@swathichatrapathy9347
@swathichatrapathy9347 7 лет назад
Hi Thanashyam you will still need a layer over the down jacket because you need something wind proof. Ponchos are not comfortable to trek with, so use them only if it is raining. When it isn't raining, you'll need a wind-proof jacket.
@IshaniMehta

Actually 10-15°C is not that cold while trekking as your body heats up and you will even sweat to some extent especially on your back as the backpack provides good insulation to your back. What you need to actually take care of, is you your "extremities"; the hands, the legs your nose and your ears. Wear a woollen cap or balaclava that covers your ears and wear warm woolen socks and woollen or synthetic gloves. Also cover your nose with the balaclava or monkey cap. Breathing cold mountain air could land you in trouble. Keep your chest warm by wearing 2-3 layers of warm clothes as mentioned in this video. Insulate yourself. Avoid cotton as it saps body heat and in turn your energy.

You didn't mention anything about sleeping bags. Is it not that important? I always find that the days are manageable as we keep hiking, but the nights are too painfully challenging as the temperature drops drastically at night during winter treks.

Hi, This video focuses on the proper layering of clothing for a winter trek in the Himalayas, which you will have to carry. We sleeping bags are an essential during night as the temperatue will drop down and we do provide it on our treks. You can read more about it here - indiahikes.com/blog/sleeping-bag-tutorial

Hi Swathi, Thanks as always for your very informative and useful Videos,. I am planning trek to Hampta Pass in Aug, Do you think I would be needing thermals? My feeling is T-shirt, fleece and water/wind proof jacket and Trek pants would suffice. Appreciate your feedback.

Hi Ashok, you will definitely need at least one more warm layer apart from the fleece and padded jacket. Carry a woollen sweater or another fleece. It usually rains in July/August, making it a notch colder. So you'll need at least three warm layers.

Do I need to wear thermal under the pant while trekking?
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 5 лет назад
Not at all! Save the thermals for the night, and not for while trekking. You don't want them sweaty and wet! You'll also feel very hot if you wear thermals while trekking.

@@Indiahikes and what about fleece? Will i wear fleece while trekking?
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 5 лет назад
@@NabidAlam360 That's alright, many of us do wear fleece while trekking if it is cold. Since its' your outer layer (as opposed to inner thermals), it's alright to wear them while trekking.

Video is very informative. Need suggestions for the gloves,
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 2 года назад
Hi Avinash, If you are going any time when there is snow, you’ll need gloves to grip something or to steady yourself in snow. You also want the gloves to keep you warm. Get synthetic hand gloves that have waterproofing on the outside and a padded lining on the inside. If you find the combination difficult to get (not likely), wear a tight fitting fleece hand glove inside a synthetic hand glove. Hand gloves are mandatory on any Himalayan trek.

what about summer/monsoon treks?
@swathichatrapathy9347
@swathichatrapathy9347 7 лет назад
Hi Fatema, for summer treks (May and June), around three warm layers will be enough. In monsoon, you'll need four warm layers.

Quite a mean thing to say. On the mountains, climbing is much easier if you are lean and have less body weight
