One thing that has fascinated me about this subject is the physiology of what happens when people sing together. According to several authors (which I can forward if you want) when people sing together, oxytocin - the trust hormone - is released in our brains. One of the functions of oxytocin is bonding, it makes people draw closer to one another. It also helps a group go from several individuals to literally a corporate mind - all on the same wavelength if you like. It also prepares the prefrontal cortex of our brains to receive new information. So God designed our brains to draw closer to one another and to unite with one another when we sing together. And that helps us be ready to hear and learn new information.

1.5 years later, (since this video was posted) and now...today, the Holy Spirit has used your teaching through this video to lift me up and help me solve a giant problem with one of my lay worship leaders. So yeah, the HS is not on our timetable, and enjoys reaching into whatever we're doing whenever we need His counsel...especially in our planning to do the work of worship leadership. Thank you so much!

Great nugget on planning and the Holy Spirit. I had these very same thoughts last week and it was great to hear it verbalised. I have that clip saved for future encouragement.

I really like that you guys say that much preparation is encouraged alongside letting the Holy Spirit lead. I remember in one of the live-streams that Brian said that it’s easier to know where the Spirit is leading you when you have something well prepared/rehearsed. Helps you distinguish that better from something that could simply just be you winging it. I’ve been starting to do that, encouraging my congregation and saying something from scripture between songs. It’s definitely something to get used to. Thank you guys for making this video! Chris Sligh helped us with our grand opening of Cityreach Murrieta and he is a wonderful man.

This is so helpful! We’re starting a new church, so we have a chance to grow a new culture. We’re also learning that folks come with their previous culture!

Couple questions: 1. How do you challenge more mature Christians to engage in worship while also making sure the first-time unchurched attender feels comfortable if they don’t want to engage yet? 2. What are some practical things that you taught? Purpose of musical worship? I’d love to hear you expound on how you define the purpose of corporate worship vs. personal worship. Great topic!

Hey Taylor! I think there's actually an awful lot to teach on this subject, but to answer your questions succinctly as possible: 1) Worship through music by definition is for the insider, not the outsider. Even in the secular business world, one of the most important aspects of modern leadership is the idea that people are drawn to authenticity (Simon Sinek writes beautifully about this often). I have come to believe that outsiders -- i.e., the unchurched -- might find something strange because it is unfamiliar but they are drawn to what they see as authentic. I believe biblical worship should be authentic and should be contagious. So my goal for every congregation I've led was to create worshippers that worshipped well and authentically based upon what we believed to be authentic Scriptural corporate worship, and believe that the outsider would be attracted to that. I think we often confuse "authentic" worship with weird. I've seen some weird worship that was authentic but the vast majority of authentic worship isn't weird, even to the outsider. 2) Practically, I would build moments into worship where you speak on why you do what you do; talk practically about what we expect; if your congregation is "dead", then start with your team's passion on stage, then address the elephant in the room: here's why the people on stage act the way they act during worship through music; etc. Like I said, I think there's a whole series of videos we could build around this, but I hope that suffices for now. Thanks for commenting Chris

@14:30 “then we look up or we open our eyes “ ... well here’s the thing: if I’m not engaging with the people, the people aren’t going to engage with what I’m doing on stage. If my eyes are closed I have gone into my private place. Let the congregation see the fire inside you, how else are they going to catch it? I’ve been watching a good few of your videos now and it’s good stuff. Blessings and keep it coming!

I would really love to hear specific examples of the things that Chris or Brian teach between songs. All I ever find are very general statements. Brian or Chris would you be able to speak to this? It would be extremely helpful.

That’s a great idea. I have a series (only a few videos in it) on RU-vid called ‘Spiritual Direction’ that takes a song and goes into specifics about how you could set it up and lead it.

What kind of baptist church did you grow up in? I grew up southern Baptist and they are some of liveliest churches out there... maybe that's different?

I also grew up in a Baptist church in North Carolina, but I am Caucasian as was much of the congregation and my experience was the same as his. Now, the AME Zion down the road had it goin on!

25+ years doing this and we still ask the same question. How do we get the congregation to not stand there and watch like it’s a concert? I’m sure I’ll offend plenty, but I come from the same background. We have a perfectly spaced backline with a lead singer and backup vocalists. We are equipped better than many touring bands, have our fancy backdrops, pro lighting rigs, some of the most advanced sound equipment money will allow. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck.....

Pretty good insight, but you might want to change the subject of this video. I was looking for something more specific relating to music-less worship. Certain states like mine(california) have banned singing in church so when I saw this subject I thought that is what you were going to address, but 15 minutes later you did not touch on it at all. Everything else you included was good and it is what I use in my worship leading. Maybe you could do another video specifically addressing how to lead a worship service with no singing.

I have had music-less services at my church before but they involved being in the same building. I would like to try doing it as we continue to worship as a church remotely.

This is a GREAT high level discussion, but would be so much better if you had provided a couple of examples of what you would say or do in 30-45 seconds to "teach" the congregation. Many of us are hungry for some real skills-building information. Inspiration is fantastic and appreciated but how about demonstrating what you are talking about? Our services are planned to the minute and while I am encouraged as worship leader to be authentic and to speak to the congregation, I am reminded to keep it brief and not to be "preachy."
