This might just be what i needed, i really like when my kart has oversteer but i always find myself in situations where i feel like it has understeer, i always sit neutral or lean into the corner, considering i weigh around 75kg's thats how i might be loosing out on that few tenths of a second each lap, TYSM, i'll try this next session
This is mostly true except for a few cases. One being driving style, as some people prefer understeer, and two being that if you lean into the corner, you can do it so that you weight shifts laterally with the forces to be on the outside wheel in faster corners. Good video though!
Thanks for explaining this so well! I want to go and race competitively for the first time in just a few days time, and I thought you had to lean to the inside of every corner 😅 Yeah, it makes sense that all the body weight will fall on the inside tire, but I didn't know you had to make a natural motion. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
Leaning has yielded no significant changes for me. And I weigh considerably more than you. I remain neutral in the seat and that has given me the fastest and most consistent lap times out of any other technique that requires weight shifting. So I think weight matters a lot, especially when taking these heavy rental karts into consideration.
I found the same. Also, because the seat holds you tightly in one position, you can't move the weight around enough to make a significant impact anyway.
Same, i used to lean on the outside. But i felt more consistent when i tried to stay stable and let the kart and tires do their thing. Shifting the body weight, especially on shitty kart and tires could probably overload the tire or something strange like that.
@@ShadowRacing u can move a lot, but if you jerk ur body weight it could ruin that balance of the kart. So it's probably not worth other other than on very specific corners
I’ve tried both and feel like I can get a slightly better and more grippy run when I’m leaning in. I’m a heavy guy at 115kg and have mostly been racing rentals since I recently got into karting but have been racing frequently since. I personally feel like just with the weight my kart needs to be turning with, the natural tendency is to understeer regardless so leaning in gives it a bit less weight pulling it away from the corner. Thoughts?
Great, I have been doing it wrong all along. Maybe this is those last 3 tenths I need for the next level to be unlocked (my local karting place has levels associated with speed settings. I have been sitting on level 9 for weeks now) Thanks for the tip!
Try the leaning technique out next time. It'll take a bit of time getting use to. Remember, don't be overly aggressive when leaning outwards, it's more a natural motion. Let me know how you get on 👍
@@kartingtips thanks :) What I have noticed is that switching from my motorcycle boots to thin soled Puma shoes (with a Ferrari logo on the side) gives me another 2-3 tenths 😅 I can't feel the pedals in my boots.
@@kartingtips :D Daytona Toper boots. But any boots from Daytona should do the trick if you want to lose a couple of tenths :D (as in: 2-3 tenths slower than before)
Regarding seating position, is it best to have the seat as far back as possible without becoming a detriment to pedal and steering input control or better to place as forwards as possible to reduce weight on the rear axle making it easier to lift the inner rear tyre?
Depends. If you're in an electric kart where the batteries and the electric motor are towards the rear, you want to move as forward as possible to help balance the imbalance you'll create by sitting in a kart. On petrol (gas as we call it in the USA) powered karts, you want to be seated as center of kart as possible to maintain a center of gravity that supports equal weight distribution between the front and back of the kart. This is especially important in racing karts which are considerably lighter than rental karts.
Make sure u sit comfortable first. Then shift a little bit forward or rearward depending on the track and your times. U cant really give one fits all answer
