Haha this is great. The name Jin-un fits Robin pretty well for some reason. I speak fluent Korean and I’m learning French and Arabic. As mentioned by Matt, these languages are part of my identity now. I also value learning new languages because we can exchange ideas in multiple forms to understand ourselves and the world better. Besides, learning a new language is a complex process that strengthens your linguistic as well as visual, auditory, and motor processes in the brain. So even if you’re not planning on traveling to another country, I recommend everyone to at least try to learn a new language for its long-term neuronal plasticity benefits. Continue the love for learning!

Your perspective on "street French" vs "school French" is such an interesting take on language learning, Robin. I was fortunate enough to have teachers in Spanish and French who taught the "proper" language for the context of exams but also made an effort to bring in more conversational words and phrases. But even then, the focus for certifications generally were how we should answer particular questions. Whereas your discussion with Matt really highlighted the importance of learning what is relevant to you to be able to interact with other speakers in a target language, which I really appreciated. Great insights!

I studied Spanish all through school. I have a BA with double major in English and Spanish, an MA in Spanish and an MSLS in library science. My recommendation to Spanish learners is to get 2 college level years of Spanish under your belt and then just consume as much Spanish language media as you can. Watch Spanish tv programs and read a magazine or newspaper in Spanish regularly. If college level courses are too expensive you can DIY your program using a 4 year high school Spanish curriculum (Easy Peasy High School on the web has links to materials), and Destinos is a beginner course in tv novela format that contextualizes the grammar and vocabulary. It's about the level of first year college Spanish, and even though it's an older curriculum Spanish hasn't changed and new tech vocabulary is mostly borrowed from English anyway.

The video was great thank you guys I only have one tiny criticism, it might be helpful for your friend. He took so long to reach the point he was trying to make in his sentences. He was perfectly articulate and well spoken but somehow mid way through his sentences I kept getting distracted because of how long they were. Yet again thanks for the video
