How to learn any language by sentence mining, aka gathering as many sentences, with audio, as you can find and memorizing them via spaced repetition.
Some things I discussed in the video:
Anki, a program for creating and reviewing flashcards with a built-in spaced-repetition algorithm that maximizes your review efficiency:
ankisrs.net/
CantoDict sentences, hundreds of Cantonese sentences and audio:
www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/scri...
Tatoeba, an awesome sentence database with hundreds of thousands of sentences in different languages, often with audio:
tatoeba.org/eng/
Glossika, a review system that gives you 3,000 sentences in a huge variety of languages, including oddball ones that you can only find there like Belarusian, Armenian, and Wenzhounese:
glossika.com/
Bing Mandarin-English dictionary, a SUPERB resource for finding Mandarin examples (as well as a one-stop-shop Mandarin/Chinese dictionary) -- automatically compiles what has to be millions of examples from across the web.
dict.bing.com.cn/?form=BDVSP4#...
(None of these are paid endorsements, btw.)
You can get my Cantonese Anki deck, which has about 400 example sentences in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin, with audio, right here:
www.dropbox.com/s/pzsfy2qbnk1...
And don't forget to subscribe! And help me out on Patreon here:

Also, a better way than spaced repetition is to act out your sentences. Actually squeeze some lemon onto some toast and say the sentence as you're doing it. Then use the same grammatical structure and actually put a book on the table, etc. Don't poo on the carpet though.

I'm studying spanish for 4 months, but only started immersing myself 2 months ago. I listened to spanish music, movies, shows etc. and talk to natives. I also started reading grammar book and even memorized it, but overtime I keep forgetting the conjugations. Until I realized how I learned my 2nd language when I was young - totally submerging myself to the language without even taking a formal class. Now instead of memorizing conjugations for future perf. preterit, past imperf. and etc, I started writing down complex phrases that I can use in everyday life. Today it has been 2 months, and I made 5x the progress I did before.

@@TedEhioghae Essentially, just drill yourself really hard on complete sentences in whatever language you're learning in order to simulate a more natural, "native" learning environment. You can use anki or some other flashcard reader to achieve this form of learning, and there are hundreds of flashcard sets (for anki) for most of the major languages that you can use for common day to day sentences. Memorize them in order to become more proficient at your chosen language. That's really the main idea of what he's getting at. @@ktremblay6479 I focused first with vocabulary. A lot of people tell you to speak from the first day but what works for me is to learn vocabulary first because if you know a lot of words already, it's easy to apply them in sentences. While learning vocabulary, those words which are hard for me to remember, I'm creating sentences using it in another deck using the words I know good. I agree with others; A language cannot be fully learned in just a month or two, especially if one is not exposed to native speakers regularly and has a full time job or other responsibilities that take up time. Perhaps in a month, you can learn a considerable amount of vocabulary as well as sentence structure and grammar, but not at a level where one can be considered fluent. It takes time and practice to train the brain and the mouth (speaking a different language with distinctly different sounds can be tiring on the tongue!). I also feel like one should use as many resources as possible, this includes communication with native speakers, books, articles, movies, music, and things such as duolinguo and resetta stone. How could they hurt? However, these are useful tips and should be used to further language learning.

I really find your advice very helpful and true. I've been learning English for quite some time already and I couldn't actually speak it when I was learning it at school (where we learned grammar mostly and some vocab). The thing moved from the dead point only after I found a tutor (who was amazing by the way). And what she did was that she was giving me lists of sentences and phrases in different categories (like food, hobbies, travelling etc) and she would practice conversation with me using those given patterns. Only after that I was able to start speaking. That's why I totally support your methods! So good luck on your journey! You can do it! PS. I really dislike those who write there negative comments. Looks like they have nothing else to do. It's just pathetic. So don't pay attention. You are awesome. Good luck!

The reason it sticks in your mind for a kid is because when your mum says she 'puts a little food on the table' she actually also DOES that. The kid sees her doing the action she's describing as well as the items she mentioned in the sentence. Its also repetition but its the visual aspect and very often the physical aspect if you as a kid hold whatever object your mum refers to. This is the most vital thing. Although nobody seems to know these things except me. What's the quote from Homer Simpson? "Everyone is stupid but me". Also on a side note, duolingo IS sentence mining. That's what its designed for although several people have already commented that.

Hi, nice video, my 2 cents: We shouldn't try to learn as babies do. They learn by endless exposure of basic patterns (baby talk at start) and gradually getting more complex. But that process takes many years and many hours during those years. As an adult trying to learn a foreign language from scratch, I think you should use all your advantages and capability of understanding and learning. So I'd say following through a grammar book/course while you go about doing your sentence mining is essential.
@ariinbeijing
@ariinbeijing 7 лет назад
José Lima totally agree actually, BUT I think how babies learn IS very important to us. If you look at how the best Europeans learn English it's by watching a ton of undubbed American or English TV and constant exposure to the media, not by memorizing textbooks
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521 6 лет назад
Very true, with english quite a lot of people learn it with very little actual learning. But it is a slow and not boring way. You can also sometimes watch with subtitles but trying to listen to actual sounds as well. This becomes even more effective if you do add additional learning but still spend most time on tv/games. Learn things that are very common sentence builders (I, am, do, ok, no, day, by, this, it etc). Then you understand most of the sentence just have to figure out the few uncommon words.
@KabooM1067
@KabooM1067 6 лет назад
We're not babies though so we actually learn faster than babies :^) We are superior intellectually to babies so what takes a baby 100 hours might only take you 20 hours or something. The number is out of my ass but you I stand corrected.

+Jose Lima You have a point. I think, and I'm a pretty ignorant newbie so I'm saying this with NO authority and only speculation, you should use lots of approaches. Maybe get some grammar workbooks. Listen to your target language through podcasts, radio, and watch with movies and such. Work an hour a day on a structured course. Spend some time sentence mining. It's the new thing I'm adding to my "self education journey" of a new foreign language.

I do this somewhat by repeating phrases I learn in K-dramas and what I hear people say often ( look it up or ask them what they said to look up translation). I also message native Koreans and look for key phrases or conjugations I didn't learn before. It's easy to copy and paste texts and personalize them more when sensing to someone or talking in chatroom. Looking at song lyrics while listening in Korean also helps when I hear certain words again. Anyway, plan to follow these tips plus those in comments for next 4 languages I plan to learn, then compare to my knowledge of Korean. I love RU-vid!

I personally grammar are like suplements, but the sentences are the main dish. For me when i do sentences, and something just doesn't stick just glancing a bit at the grammar instantly makes things click for me. I remember i started learning my native language grammar when i was in like 2nd or 3rd grade of elementary school. I think our brains are pretty good at picking up the grammar via sentences naturally in a big part of the time.
@thedandi8905
@thedandi8905 7 лет назад
Yeah, I get your point, and that might work in some langagues specially ones close to english or whatever is your native langauge, but... That isn´t always the case, specially in languages far away from english. You can memorize thausands of sentences yet still not know why or how something is done.
@AdanP
@AdanP 7 лет назад
Yeah absolutely. i think the more far away the language is, the more difficult it becomes to do this. Personally , and this is just my style i don't mind having crappy grammar when speaking in the beginning cuz i mostly talk to people on timed language exchanges or 1hr italki sessions. I find that i'll totally suck in the beginning but i keep on talking. After a while, i pick up grammar naturally through context,or just what catches or frequently pops up for me during chats with friends or whatever. (i did this for korean and chinese, my native languages are spanish and english) I think particularly the important grammar will show up normally through normal conversation and this one takes care of itself. The hard advanced one is the one that sometimes u need to drill in really hard, cuz its just so hard to see it in daily conversation. (im talking about report writing, news and advanced stuff). But i agree with you :)

Hey Ari! I'm a huge fan, and I hope you get this message. So I've decided to use youtube videos, copy the audio and slice them with Audacity, and then put them into Anki so that I can learn Chilean Spanish (not many teaching resources for that). In another video, you say that if you just listen to one sentence, you can master pronunciation. How do I balance the time, or will this sentence mining approach also help with pronunciation. If i want to get pronunciation right first, should I listen to that one sentence over and over again? Or should I just jump into sentence mining and do about 10-15 sentences a day?

You need real exposure to the language, Duolingo is artificial and dumb-downed for foreigners. Listen to real, native media and TV shows raw without subtitles, look up words you dont know every few minutes, and sentence mine and you have yourself an extremely effect method to acquiring your target language.

this method is really soo effective! this is how i learned my second language: english! i never took a single course besides what they teach at school and everyone around me just speaks spanish. i just learned by watching movies and videos and listening to music, memorizing the lyrics and repeathing them... now i'm learning a new language the 'traditional way', been learning it for a whole semester now and really there isn't a great improvement... how did i never think about this? I'll practice sentence mining from now on...

No, don't learn Russian that way. The way we English speakers have adapted to learning speech can't be applied to Russian or any other Slavic language at all just because there really is no structure to Russian at all. You can put the subject literally anywhere, negation anywhere, verb anywhere, object anywhere and the meaning will be the same just because they have 6 different grammatical cases for verbs, two-three of which we don't even have in English at all. I can't learn languages by sentence mining very well, but I definitely can't learn Russian by sentence mining just because I'm not a native speaker. I can definitely tell you that it will take years to sentence mine Russian if you're not actually dropped in Russia with absolutely nothing. I say that as being a polyglot. Russian is harder than Japanese and even Mandarin for me just because there's no flat way to say something in Russian.

I just need to build up my vocabulary and basic comfort with French grammar structures before digging into the mechanics of the language.

Wouldn't it be better to just read as much as possible in the target language? For beginners most of the fairy tales written for elementary school kids are just fine. That's how I got familiar with English. But it is also true that grammar is to some extent essential as well. As for now I have reached a solid beginner level on Japanese from where I can start reading those mentioned stories and it really feels great to know that I can make a meaning out of a bunch of once weird strokes called Kanji. In case anyone has problem finding stories which fits their level, 'Graduated Readers' is a good way to go for Japanese (self) learners though it's a bit pricy.

To be fair to one of his points, kids DO read textbooks in their native languages as a learning tool. It's called school. How many textbooks have bolded key-words for you to learn? How many classes did you have to take to learn the grammar, proper comma usage, and the difference between adjectives and adverbs?
@cling6389
@cling6389 6 лет назад
Bro not gonna lie but most people don't know what they are or how to use commas correctly and also there are many people that didn't go to school and get taught those things that and fluent in the language lol. And new flash, loads of people used to not be able to read but could still speak fluently. But using your logic unless you can read and know how to use commas, you can't speak. lmao

This is what I'm saying. Learning language "like a baby" is an okay concept, but understand that once you're "done" you'll be at the level of a baby. My english (native language) was pretty okay at 4. I could talk to and understand most people, but being able to speak/read/write as well as I do now came through years of learning grammar and writing in school. I've also read hundreds of books over time. If you want to "naturally" progress like a native learner then those are the next steps. Sorry, there are no shortcuts fluency.

Babies learn language slower than adults. All they have is all the time to learn a language, they are immersed in the language and have nothing to do. Adults on the other have a lot of shit to deal except learning a new language. So, it takes time, there is no magic method to learn a language.

Harris No you idiot, during the 1st until the 36th month of his life the baby is constantly overwhelm with the complexity around him Images,Faces,languages,colors...in order to adapt his brain start to work really hard to find pattern, and combine them together to understand the world around him, this why it's a this period of time when The baby is exposed to complex music such as Jazz or Classical he's most likely to develop the perfect pitch, about learning a language an adult can do the same too but the fact that he has been using the same language for a long time and his brain become so anchor and fix upon it, it become harder for him to adapt to a whole new language

You found the right way to learn a new language. Of course an audio with the translation isn't the best way... When we're kids we learn not only by listening to and repeating, we learn by visualizing the things our parentes points out. They say "mama or papa" and points to themselves and we learn from that and point to them... And so it goes on in life... We never get rid off people teaching us... Liked the video though
