Been studying Chinese since 2002 and built my career around it. Get to travel to China, visit factories and negotiate in Chinese a lot. From that perspective I can absolutely confirm everything you say and suggest 🙂 One more thing that really helped me is writing about whatever topics I intend to talk about, be it private or business. It allows enough time to look up missing words or polish sentence structure. I think it’s valuable even if there is no one to correct it. I personally find that characters are not a problem over time, but pronunciation and listening comprehension are a pain, especially when working in rural areas… this still is the hardest part for me. So sometimes I force myself to work through videos of RU-vidrs who speak very fast or not so clear. That’s probably it: find your weaknesses and work on them. Good luck everyone!

But mainly because I became a father right after graduation and did not want to go back to China for a long time or work crazy hours, family had to come first. That limited my options for quick success, like going into consulting or so. But I would say, the key lessons are: 1. Chinese language skills alone will not get you anywhere, you need some hard skills as well. In my case it was a management degree and I specialized on purchasing and food. Engineering, law or whatever will work, too, but in any case the right focus/ specialization is important. If I could go back I would probably start out scanning linkedin and other platforms for job offers containing the keyword "China" or "Chinese" and see what kind of qualifications are sought for by organizations/ businesses that have ties to China. 2. Be prepared for a long haul. I can negotiate in Chinese and win most "language power struggles" by now. But that did not come easy. In my first job, I would prepare for a 2-minute phone call by checking the dictionary (still on paper in 2006 🙂) for 15 minutes... And even being fluent in everyday situations is still far away from what it takes to actually thrive in the workplace. For me, learning Chinese was like climbing a mountain where you realize several times that the peak is still much further away than you think... But well, there are some views to enjoy at pretty much every stage of the climb.
I’m a first gen Chinese American whose parents come from China. They raised me in New York and Chinese is spoken at home but they both are fluent in English so that I always return responses in English. Decades later, I’m embarrassed that my Chinese is not as fluent as I would like. I’m determined to get more fluent now

As a native English speaker, English is DIFFICULT. We have so many rules, but then we go and break them. Spelling is a mess and makes no sense. We have a lot of vocabulary from other European languages, and there's so many nuances in how something is said that can have different connotations. Having said that, if you speak with incorrect grammar we will still understand you. And we'll also understand incorrect spelling. I'm really grateful it's my first language. Even though I'm struggling so much to learn Chinese 😅
Recent I have not been learning Chinese...Kinda lazy! But I've been watching Chinese drama ( I'm a Kdrama /Chinese drama addict) so watching Chinese Drama endlessly is really helping my accent and Chinese in general. So I Highly recommend watching Chinese drama to all Learners out there. it's fun

I always thought Chinese was incredibly difficult, but once I started to learn, I fell in love with it. It’s the only language that I can read and write in almost from the very beginning. English is my second language, and I’ll make Chinese my third!

@@julianabarbosa5904 I started with apps, like Chineasy and SuperChinese, and videos, like “basic Chinese in 50 minutes” on Chinese101 channel. The apps helped me to learn my first hieroglyphs and basic grammar, the videos taught me to understand basic phrases. I also watch Chinese tiktoks, and donghua with subs, which isn’t too useful, but it keeps me interested in learning. Writing down and repeating hieroglyphs and pinyin everyday helps me a lot with reading! I read Fanfiction and Weibo app. Btw, I study languages through reading, grammar and input; it’s not said to be the best way but it is how I learnt English, and how I study Chinese. Khim, I also became conversational in Spanish and am currently studying Chinese. You can’t go wrong with either language; English, español, and 中文 are in the top five most spoken languages in the world!

But when the pandemic started (I was in 7th grade) I decided to learn Spanish again. I use duolingo (sometimes) but, I do watch Spanish videos very often. I also practice my Spanish with some of my online friends before. I also downloaded a lot of Spanish apps to widen my vocabulary. It's really a fun journey learning a new language. If you're planning to learn Spanish, just know that even if it's hard but, everything's gonna be fine, you can do it! :)

Anki is certainly an effective tool and many of Chinese students use this tool to improve their English level. You video is very interesting、enjoyable and enlightening. Well, saying a few well practiced sentences as introduction is something else as holding a full conversation with an actual Chinese. Or following anything on Chinese night time tv for the passive exercise. Dare OR Truth? ;). Anyway, it's a slow process. Just keep spending the focused hours and you will improve.
The tones aren't hard to learn, as long as everyone is using the same tones. Different dialects use different tones, and that's where things become difficult.
I can only say that one of the best ways to learn Chinese vocabulary is to read novels and watch Chinese TV dramas. I learned it unconsciously. This is their children's way. At least I didn't know Chinese characters at all when I was a child, but I can gradually learn Chinese characters from watching TV (although this way is slower, I still recommend reading wuxia novels).
Of course, the best way to integrate into the Chinese society is to find a Chinese user. Starting from "你吃了吗？", Chinese food is really an endless topic.

I had a great experience way back in the 80's (which dates me) with a system just like this...and have been amazed that almost no one has had training systems like this since. Being a phycology student myself with a thesis in how memory works, such a technique was one of the best systems I'd found to create a deep memory trace (aside from mnemonics and such). Thank you. Perfect Mandarin pronunciation! For westerners, the challenge of learning Chinese lies in two aspects: 1. Chinese does not belong to the Indo-European Family of languages. So, there are very few "false friends" to help with memorisation. 2. The greatest difficulty is the thousands of characters. One easy point in learning Chinese is its grammar. Just lump all the words that you know together and you will be able to get the meaning across. Tenses and plural forms do not matter. Even "he", "she" and "it" sound exactly the same in Mandarin.
I want to add that learning characters itself is not difficult, once you get used to them they become easy, the only problem is that there are thousands to memorize 😭

You've really motivated me to start learning again. I lived in Beijing for 2 years and found it easy to pick up the speaking basics but gave up on the reading and writing pretty quickly.
I love learning Chinese and actually find it easy . I tried learning Spanish before which should’ve been super easy since my grandma only speaks Spanish and moved to the uk soo I spent a lot of time with her but it was the hardest most boring thing ever 😩. I just passed hsk 3 after studying since august 2021 and I have to say it has to be the only thing really keeping me going . I’d recommend everyone to get Pleco , you do have to pay once for flash cards etc but it’s amazing
the structure of chinese is so easy and makes a lot of sense. The sounds are difficult. Spanish is just a very VERB intense languages and has many many ways to conjugate those verbs

Subscribed, lked and ordered the "2000 most common Chinese words in context" book. My grandparents were in Shandong, near Jinan. When my Dad passed, I took 1/2 his ashes back there as his last wishes in 2014. He was raised there to age of 8. China is a great country with a great future. I want to go back on vaca soon. Great advice - some further tips: 1) You can configure Pleco to export vocab and example sentences to Anki - good for vocab lists, and cheaper than buying Pleco's SRS system 2) Using the above method, look for sayings and idioms - these provide intelligible context, test your character recognition, can be quite thought-provoking and funny and can be quite useful. An example is "化干戈為玉帛" = (literally) change shield dagger into jade silk = exchange weapons of war for gifts = "bury the hatchet" or "turn swords into ploughshares" 3) Learn a bit of character history and etymology so that you can easily visualise what characters actually represent (but DON'T overdo it!) It's important to know that first came pictures of concrete stuff, later came combinations of concrete stuff to express abstract ideas, then after that came combinations of sounds and meanings for visual disambiguation, and then lastly came bigrams and tones for phonetic disambiguation. For example, the "dian" mentioned in the video is a picture of lightning striking a field, and the "hua" is a combination of a tongue (representing speaking) and a picture of a putting something in your mouth (pronounced "gua"). Wiktionary and Richard Sears' website (hanziyuan.net/) are great for this, but again DON'T overdo it or you'll get bogged down.

Also a very important thing is everyone is better at certain memorising techniques. I have adhd so I have had to do some iq tests and apparently I am bad at memorising hearing words but really good at memorising reading/writing things. So just figure out first which memorising technique works for you best and mostly use that.

This is an excellent video, thank you. In addition to using vocabulary frequently lists, Chinese learners may be interested in following the HSK path. (HSK = Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi 汉语水平考试) There are six levels (Nine in the new HSK format). HSK Level 1 starts with basic words and characters, then HSK 2 adds more vocabulary, more grammar, essentially using the most frequently used words and phrases, and so on for subsequent levels. By studying graduated levels, a learner can follow a path that grows in steps of not only vocabulary, but sentence structure, grammar and multiple definitions (or uses) of words.

Learning Chinese is really fun. I've been doing it on and off since 2013. Learned Cantonese too. I'm a caucasian guy from the Netherlands. Didnt have much exposure to the language growing up, but always kinda wanted to learn it. Lived in Hong Kong and Taiwan for a bit, some years ago. Used Pleco and Anki too and I could generally hold up a daily life type of conversation pretty well. Its just that more complicated topics are rather tough, and I am really bad at reading too. Which is funny because I can type Chinese just fine, but if you were to ask me to read an article I'd struggle big time. Now my challenge is to improve at least my speaking from this point onwards.. It's too big of a jump for me to just go and talk to native speakers about complicated topics. Often leaving me feeling rather exhausted and frustrated. It's funny because when I, for instance on a language exchange app, start talking to natives.. they'd think I'm really fluent at first. But then once we got past the sharing of hobbies, and how our day was and the life stories.. things get more in depth and then my mind starts to collapse hahah. I guess I'll have to get back to learning vocab, flashcards, spaced repetition haha. Btw, you've got such an attractive mind. The fluency at which you express yourself in the video, well-structured and knowledgable. Very intelligent. Really a pleasure to listen to you.

As a native mandarin speaker, my advice to you is - just go watch videos about complicated topics in mandarin. And I believe that’s pretty effective for any person trying to dive deep into complex, intellectual discussions about various subjects presented in another language. At least that’s how I feel when learning English. For any language, the proper vocabulary and expressions used in causal setting, academic setting, context of news reporting etc. vary dramatically and you need to be exposed to most of them, if not all, for you to at least get confident in using that language in conversations beyond small talks
We are Chinese native in Shanghai city. I want my two daughters to practise English with English speaking children, make friends. It’s helpful for your children to learn Chinese language. If possible, We can accommodate one or two children to live with my family in my house for summer holiday.
It's not just speaking but being able to understand which I find very challenging. I can't limit my vocabulary to what I often use but what I may be spoken to, as well.

If are using HelloChinese or any other language apps then ALWAYS repeat out loud each sentence. Repeating single characters is less useful. Repeat full sentences from a native speaker. Glossika also and can be useful if your tones aren’t great, it helped me when I was studying Chinese in Taiwan.

Hi,Izzy. Thanks for your amazing video. I`m an English learner and the ways you mention in the video also help for me . I have tried to use Anki but It is hassel to make those vocabulary lists with sentences,definitions and audios because you need to put them into the Anki littile by littile. So I wonder know how you do it.
Those Anki cards from video look very good, mine are much simplier, without any pictures, definitions and voice recordings, but even those take a lot of time to prepare.
@@huayulan631 I found a good one called Spoonfed Chinese. Otherwise after reading the book fluent forever I have been creating my own flashcards with images and audio and it has been super helpful. It helps your brain remember it much better if you create them.

Thank you so much for the video! I've been self-studying since March and I was surprised to see how much your method overlaps mine. I think my HSK 1-6 Anki deck even has the same 办法 and 打算 images, sentences and voice recordings 😂 I have just one question if you don't mind: In your experience, was it enough to practice pronunciation on your own (by listening closely and imitating, for example), or did you also need a lot of pronunciation feedback from native speakers. If the latter, what would be the best way to get such feedback? I find that conversation partners and even private tutors are often reluctant to interrupt a conversation to provide this kind of feedback.
Hi Vincent. To practice pronunciation, chanting poetry is a great way to train your tongue and ears. Chinese is a tonal and rhythmic language. Thanks Izzy....your suggestions on how to learn Mandarin makes a lot of sense which I shall actively pursue to achieve my ambition in learning the language before I embark on a planned tour of China.
