I started streaming recently, and I can concur that commentating my own gameplay has helped me improve. Just talking about what I'm doing (even when there are no viewers) helps me internalize how I can improve my decision-making
ioStux you are too good for RU-vid man. In a place full of click-baits, you give us meaningful, genuine and thought out material. Even if I quit OW I will always remember you as a true Game coach. Kudos! I seriously wish I could afford a session with you but I am a broke ass student haha.
'its a lot harded to do something stupid if you actually say it' you are a genius. I constantly do something that I regret simply cos I don't think about it.
This is very similar to something I heard by a chess grandmaster. He said that we're all geniuses at answering chess questions, but we are naturally terrible at asking ourselves the correct ones. If we ask ourselves the correct questions before each chess turn, then all of our moves will be the best they possibly can be. In chess, these questions would be, "is my opponent threatening anything with their previous move?" Or, what's my worst piece see the moment?" In overwatch, the questions would be the ones mentioned in the video, i.e. when to flank/peel, status of when ultimates, etc.
A thing to note is a lot of players watch pro players, of any fps, and see them wipe the floor against a nearly oblivious team. Things like walking behind and killing 3-4 people before they even turn to hit them, so they think "What the hell why do I never get to fight dumb people like that?" The reason is not because the players are dumb, but because the pro flanked at a CORRECT time. He flanked when they were distracted, shooting at one of your team mates about 10 feet away, they're too BUSY to turn around and fight you, that's why pros can do such successful plays whereas normal players go in and just straight up die. It's not even mechanical, you can't out-mechanics a 6 man team, you have to out-smart them.
Just remember to mute your mic when commentating your every move else you'll clog up comms... That and make you sound like a crazy person. Awesome video again ioStux. I'd like to thank you for teaching :)
I'm primarily a strategy gamer who just started playing overwatch. It was this *exact* aspect of overwatch that attracted me to the game; the constant need to make strategic and tactical decisions.
ive been doing youtube commentaries for 7 years now and it is easily the biggest reason why i've been able to pick up so many games in different genres cus i see my mistakes and learn from my videos every day. nice to see someone else realize how important self vod review is
Wait since you self vod review I need some tips when analyzing: How tf do you handle watching very shitty vods of yourself and also shit plays by teammates too? seriously I have dealt with it way too much lately (I wish I didn't have to blame teammates but they can do a number to your head when bad plays happen.)
oh ive been ranting about fucking randoms for years man. it's VERY frustrating watching back gameplay seeing how simple decision making should be and how they FUCK IT UP all game
I think another good habit to get into is gradually incorporating new habits. The general flaw I see is tunnel vision. Try to force yourself to look at the killfeed. Before entering a fight, look at the scoreboard and think for a second on what ults the enemy has. When it a team fight, force yourself to think "am I firing at the right person?" Try to look out for sounds in your backline to see if you have to peel. And most importantly, when you notice you've lost a fight, regroup.
gamesense is situational awarness. Fighter pilots used the OODA loop, search for it and Kim's game to practice observation. thats all u need to know just research situational awarness and ooda, understand it and your good to go
thanks for your great videos. i was just above bronze league a while ago but now im mid-gold and rising quickly (i pretty much win 8/10 games i play now, as mccree mostly). you have been a great help.
I used to use the commentate every day in video games and I got really good at it, so good at it that I used to do it in my head and I used it in school. I had really good grades for 2 years and it was an amazing point in my life. But one day I realized that I did it so much that I didn't talk, like at all, my best friends were the only ones I talked to already but now people literally thought I was mute and I didn't snap out of it until a guy tried to make fun of me and to my face, I yelled at the kid in class and everybody went silent because everybody thought I was a mute. I like your technique a lot but when you said to commentate everything it really made something in my mind twitch a little bit. Love your vids keep up the good work.
I'm not sure why you don't have more subs, dude. Every video is so clear and so helpful, and this, a video about the mythical "gamesense", was no exception. Everyone who is a slight bit interested in getting better at Overwatch should be glued to this channel.
+Caligulove I am super busy because of the coaching I do, so sadly I dont always have time to create new videos. Its incredibly difficult to grow on this platform unless you uplpad frequently and consistently. But I am still glad that you enjoy it! =)
I've been looking for the best video explaining game sense and this is honestly the best and most insightful one out there that goes straight to the point and you actually learn something from it. Thanks for making this! Much appreciated
I think this video did help me. I of couse watched it when it came out. But I recently had han huge problem that I autopilot to much. So I came back to this channel and it always bring wonders to me. Thanks Iostux
Thank you ioStux! I love your videos and youre the best channel for improving in the game,Ive reached my season high yesterday and keep breaking my own records becuse of you, thank you! keep up the good work!
Hi ioStux, I gotta say you're the best at these kinds of teaching videos. I find all your videos very helpful so thanks for sharing your game knowledge.
Thanks for this. I am currently a low diamond Flex player, however I mostly play Genji, Rein, Pharah, and Hanzo. I play with several Mid-Masters and above players, and they all agree that mechanically, I'm extremely good, but they also agree that i'm lacking when it comes to gamesense, and making choices on what to do when, ie; when to use ult, which person should I dive at what point, timing double jumps, etc.. It's something I've been working on, and I think I'll try this out and see where it gets me.
Playing on autopilot is my weakness. I feel like there are times where I don't notice someone coming up behind me (even though in the death replay I can hear it very well). I guess saying out loud "I should be careful and listen if anyone is coming up behind me" would be useful to getting me in the habit of being alert in those situations. Good content as always!
+CapnHMCrunch Another huge advantage is that you will always do something. Very often I catch coachees doing nothing in between teamfights, even though they could use that time to track ultimates or get into position!
3:10 you know the typical phrase that teachers told you when you was a kid? "in the future all this boring things will help you out in life" well, fuck school, since i'm started teaching "myself" everything and abandon school, i started to talk alone unconciusly in my room, this is one of the most helpful things i ever learned.
Yeah you're definitely right about how hard it is to think WHILE talking to teammates, that's why I think it's only useful to talk about few things like ult usage and engagements in Matchmaking, Otherwise everyone will perform poorly Cuz we ain't pros
Hmm. I might not have realized that when I was playing yesterday, but I probably started off playing consciously and slipped into autopilot as I got comfortable with a few wins or otherwise with playing at least a little bit decently. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to do conscious play non-verbally right from the get-go (at least, if you think you actually can do so), but try to be aware that you're doing it and realize if you've slipped into autopilot. It might be time to move on to something else when you do.
Damn. This some good shit. xD I while back i did the whole commentating gameplay thing and it helped a lot. Like i would literally talk to myself on what to expect in the next team fight, what cooldowns i should be saving e.g sleep dart and who to look for at the beginning of a team fight
Wow yeah I have to admit autopilot is pretty cancer in competitive. I look back and say "Wow that was so dumb of me" I went in just cause without second though.
Wow that mental planning is an incredibly useful tip. I prefer not to say it out loud since I can easily do it mentally but I never thought about that, is that really playing consciously not on auto pilot?
Year later and I still haven't implemented this. fml Nah but really Im gonna try and implement this into my games I think I can make myself more conscious of how I play and see more knowledgable for how I can play better against other players.
If I submit a vod review for one of your coaching sessions, would it be helpful or workable if I included my own self-commentary during the game like you described, or would you prefer me to simply play as I usually do? I took your advice from a previous video you uploaded and started muting my coms during games because the toxicity was getting to me. Not sure if it helps, but at least I'm not letting other players upset me.
love how People watch, lone Hawk, stylosa and other popular ow youtubers for "tips" whilst most of the skip you and People like skyline, it just doesnt make sense
Gonna start doing this. Been told my aim is really good, but that i just do retarded things constantly. Like not realising I got discord on me, reaper is behind me, me going outside shield so fort. Been stuck in mid Diamond since season 6. Hopefully this will help >.
Does this carry over into different ganes? I notice people are really good with other games (that they have just started playing) if they play other games/ a certain game really well.
This is how you improve as a poker player aswell. :) The question is lets say I want to improve as Tracer and I'm gonna do it in quick play. In quick play you get a team with 3 other dps, one tank and one healer. :D
Iostux Im a platinum player who can always manage to push into low diamond and then fall back down to mid-plat and level out there. Is there anything specific I should look out for that will help me climb into diamond and not immediately fall out
Buy his coaching, he does this work for a living. Don't try to leech off of people for your own benefit. If you want his advice outside of his videos, pay him.
I learned Swedish as my first language and then learned English but I lived in the US, I didn't speak Swedish in Public or at home because my family all spoke English in my household, but when I went to go to Sweden to visit family I came back stuttering English words and mis-pronouncing them, I think it may be temporary but what should I do.
I feel like pro players don't think through everything they do. A lot of it has been condensed to a feeling, which is why often elite players of many sports can't explain why they did what they did, one option didn't feel good and one did. The thinking is minimized for efficiency of thought so only high level strats are mentally vocalized. It's like a person whose never played a computer game needing to think even to walk around at first, and later it would be weird if you did think about it.
Am I the only who thinks that blizz needs to change up some of the Hero pics that pop up on the kill feed? Because honestly, Some of them are too similar, Like Lucio and Genji, Obviously anyone can tell them apart but when things get hectic in game you can't take your time looking at the kill feed, You need to take a quick glance at it
In regards to your comment about soldier vs zen with transcendence. Why would you want to bait the transcendence instead of just popping visor and telling ana to anti nade them? If the Zen does use transcendence
+MagisterWigbo Because the anti nade is an inconsisten play. You rely on her a:) being in voice chat b:) listening to you and c:) being able to land that nade. The chances of that play working are incredibly low. Doing that would make your entire climb a gamble and you wont really get very far. With the play that I wrote down all you need to rely on is yourself to get value.
I disagree with commenting on your own games while you are playing them. You’re interfering with your implicit memory and drawing from your explicit; completely zoning you out from micro decision making that can win you many games. Overthinking causes a “paralysis by analysis” phenomenon described by athletes, it’s why choking happens. Overthink and get caught up and what you SHOULD be doing, you end up not doing it quick enough. commentate your games afterwords like you would a vod.
It's not commentating what you are doing, it's commentating what you will be doing. The entire point behind it is to avoid paralysis by analysis. Forcing you to commentate out loud will prevent you from doing nothing, because your brain is always busy thinking the game through. And it also makes VoD reviews a lot more effective, because you will be able to listen back to your exact thought process in retrospect.
ioStux Coaching | Overwatch okay, so commentate on what you’re about to do, not what you’re currently doing. I see the distinction. While I feel that may still take people out just a little bit, I understand the technique and I’m willing to try it out. Thanks for the informative feedback as always bud.
