I LOVE how Marshall says how the biggest problem with perspective teachers is that they never teach you WHY one-point and two-point perspective is there. It's always just: if you're on a railroad or a street, it's one point, but literally everything else is two-point perspective except when it's not. Thank you!

About to turn 24 and with that comes that mind-frame that I have to have things figured out. Hearing things like Marshall learning perspective at 28 or that in his 40s Karl Kopinski still has insecurities and goals as an artist is so relieving and encouraging. So valuable that your channel has an array of accomplished artists being honest about their process and growth.

Why does hearing someone in agony relieve you and encourage you? That's narcissistic af man Edit, it's like the same vibe as someone saying "I'm glad she has plastic surgery that's making me feel prettier" or "I'm glad he went to prison, that encouraged me to want to do better in life". Why can't you feel encouraged on your own regardless of how much better everyone is?

I have been teaching the Visual Arts and Music for 44 years, and I am currently teaching an Introduction to Architecture and a Voice & Choral Music and I truly appreciate your practical and respectful approach to History. I have been blessed to have taught 24 years in our district's Gifted and Talented Program and prefer a left-brained analysis of many techniques, critical thinking and productive / creative thinking. It saddens me to hear how many teachers avoid teaching Spatial and Linear Perspective because it is difficult. I believe our goals as teachers come in showing our students what things they need to practice to develop skill thoroughly and quickly. I still get very excited seeing students enjoy success. Marshall is the GREATEST teacher I’ve encountered. And I am a harsh critic. Just bought his perceptive lectures from his website. I’ve purchased many courses and the instructors range from very good to okay. I thought I found the best (that instructor is now my second favourite) and then Marshall comes along. He has been teaching for a long and has acquired great skills along the way, but he was a very good lecturer even in his younger years, so he has natural talent for it. I’m following him wherever I find him on the net. His charisma and humour also contributes to his magnificent teaching skills and he is absolutely pleasure to watch and learn from. Grateful to Stan for introducing him to me. PS if you did a Master class course at Masterclass.com or Udemy OR finally did the Perspective Course here on Proko’s channel (please do) I’d pay for it. Hope to see more of you AND thank you for replying to my email immediately. God bless

I've been teaching perspective for a few years now and didn't realize until this video how much everyone hates it! I LOVE perspective! I think I love it because it's a technical skill with objectively correct/incorrect execution, and I can easily see where I need to improve. But I guess not everyone sees it that way, lol. I loved Marshall's metronome metaphor as well as his line "You learn perspective so you can forget it." I also had never heard the term "carried horizon line," but I think I'll be adopting that terminology as well as the exercise where you compare the carried horizon line against your leading Y edge. That's an excellent way to check your work, and I want to give my students as many tools to check their work as they can. In fact, I'm anxiously awaiting Proko's box checking AI! On that, I'm not sure Marshall's correct when he says that the leading edge will always be at 90˚ to the carried horizon line. In three point perspective, unless the leading edge is in line with our line of sight, the convergence is going to skew it one way or the other.

About Marshall’s 1994 Perspective lectures : he is one of these teachers you rarely meet in life who have a gift for making difficult subjects appear easy to grasp. He walks his students step by step through increasingly complex topics, which build up upon each other, creating the basis for a deep, almost natural understanding. More than that, he does it with joy, kindness and generosity. Marshall and Stan share the same gift for teaching. They form a terrific pair. I can’t wait to buy their upcoming courses.

Great 'cast! Marshall, I'd love to see you include in your upcoming course the reverse-engineering of perspective that was used in selected published works of art. Please include images from comics, stills from movies and animated movies. I'd also like a section of commentary on various artist's approach to and adaptation of perspective to their work, such as Neal Adams. Also please address using perspective to tell a story. Finally it would be neat to have perspective examples and exercises where perspective is utilized on the same composition at 3 to 5 levels of complexity (e.g. freehand to fully-ruled). Thanks for mentioning the "Framed Perspective" books by Marcos Mateu-Mestre; his book "Framed Ink" is one of my favorites! Another book I like, though I don't love the artist's style, is "Vanishing Point: Perspective for Comics from the Ground Up" by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer. In particular, I liked his sections on curvilinear perspective and drawing people in perspective.

I check the latest comments on this video once every couple of months to find any new information on Marshall's perspective course. His 1994 perspective course has always been my favourite explanation of perspective. An updated course with Proko's production value, in my opinion, would easily become the definitive guide on perspective for modern artists. As someone who's been self-studying art for the past 3 years and fell into the rabbit-hole of perspective, I eagerly await any news on the course ^^.

Thanks for your continued interest! We're working hard on it full time now and are close to getting to share more details about it soon. We don't want to announce it before it's fully ready to go this time!

Like math a student of perspective needs to have a good instructor. I was lucky to have the best teacher at Art Center, Ted Youngkin. It was a hard class and the teacher expected alot, but I learned perspective. Thank you Mr. Youngkin.

You guys are great - really, anybody who can make perspective entertaining is number 1 in my book. I want AI to guide my skill and creativity to marketability so that what pleases me also makes it possible to make a living. Find the people who like my style and encourage my style to a ready marketplace. My apologies to those who believe this is a sell out but not everybody has a patron or somebody else to pay the bills.

One thing about perspective that Marshall hinted at that I find interesting is that, if you picture a cube in space, there are the edges of the cube that are closer to the viewer and those that are further away. Those in the back are generally smaller (and of course never greater), but the closer the viewer is from the object, the more extreme the difference between those edges. Also the closer the viewer is, the more you need to use curves to represent those edges.

Hehe this was fun! A very nice feature of the overlay would be to show the back edges of the cubes. Drawing through the form with x-ray vision.

I want this course so bad!! I've been diving deep into perspective for a few months now. My friend just ask me if I could teach him it. Thxs for this video. I'm definitely going to pick reading that book.

Very lucky to have learned perspective at very rudimentary level while in school aged 13. It has to be internalised and becomes an organic intuition which extends into the physical. What is fascinating is that many people have no concept or experience of perspective. I will never forget the look of terror on a young girl in South Africa who had never used stairs before...

I am enjoying this lesson about perspective. Here is some remark on your review on the app-test (great fun to watch). On the 2nd box (the one that was far off) you asked why the box made by the app was so much shorter. I think it has to do with the fact that lines made by the app suggest that the vanishing point is on a different place and you are looking more on top of the box. So… the box looks shorter.

Well that's just magnificent. Marshall explained in a few sentences some things about perspective it took me weeks (and several books) to find on my own.I eagerly await the Proko course and I'm off to buy Marshall's current offering. What would I like AI to do? An extended version of this would be great. If I think I've exaggerated linear perspective or color to achieve an effect/mood, it would be nice for AI to impose normative lines and colors so I can check my exaggeration.
