I've finished the courses and all I have to say Marshall is the KING of perspective. I'm so grateful to him, you changed my vision now I can see on x-Ray and draw better, not bad for 12$ lol it's just insane ! I hope you'll make more contents because I've never seen an artist and a teacher like you … I'm stunt and so happy because it's a relief to get what is perspective, without it don't even think to be a good drawer it's something that you can't miss. A big thank you from France to you Marshall and I pray to see you again online for another sharing of knowledges :)))))

I have, this morning, for the first time in my life, drawn a 3-D cube that I know is a cube. It is a problem that has bugged me for several years: how do you know how far back to go (towards the vanishing points) to match the depth to the lengths of the front square? You can draw the back edges clearly too deep and you can draw them clearly too shallow, so there has to be some point where they are 'just right'. I had to wait until lecture 12 to get the answer, such a long wait that I got worried that the answer was beyond the wit of mankind and remained unsolved. But it is not. It was solved a few hundred years back. I have now drawn a perfect, platonic, cube, glorious in its accuracy, in proper 2-point perspective in my sketch-book. Now, shall I tackle a 3-point cube or go for a tetrahedron in 2-point? I think I'll do both. Sky's the limit now!
@MarshallVandruffVideos
@MarshallVandruffVideos 5 лет назад
You are reminding me that there is a reason I now introduce students to Plan Projection early in their training to get that question out of the way. But as much as it relieves tension to know that their is an exact way to project, it's much more valuable to imprint the proportions of the cube into the brain by practice. Not practical to always be projecting plans. Much better to sketch and say "that looks right".

I do agree - as with learning a foreign language, better to go for it and risk some grammatical errors. Still, it's good to have a dictionary and a basic grammar to refer to. Very pleased to be able to check - it's not so intuitive how one side can foreshorten so much more than the other.

@mizo2452
@mizo2452 6 лет назад
he is a great artist with stunning works but i have never seen someone explaining perspective the way as it should be for example as you did with the old intro to perspective series the enthusiasm in your teaching makes me absorb info faster which i don't forget, also when you explain a matter you put in your considration the student's Brain , most of the lessons out there for art they skip that considration and they go directly to explaining the last experiance they have acquired and forgetting explaining the first steps they followed to reach to that point of knowldge which makes their lessons more like " how to draw a face" and after watching it the student will copy and draw only that same face for the rest of his life :D i believe that art is a cumulative science you never understand what's over the surface unless you had dived into the deep at least once. so what about someone you are trying to explain to him what's over the surface ! will wait 2 more years :) thx for the books link and btw i'm advanced perspective user the best books in art and perspective i had read are books back from 1800 -1900 : just one perspective plate of theirs is worth 100 books of nowadays books i'm just looking to Add more and filling the empty holes in my art knowledge's pillar
@MarshallVandruffVideos
@MarshallVandruffVideos 6 лет назад
Thank you for the kind words Mizo! Indeed, that is one reason why I'm taking so long - I work to see it from "the student's brain" because I found perspective so hard and wished someone would make it easier. Your words encourage me, and I am on it...!
@mizo2452
@mizo2452 6 лет назад
welcome, through my perspective study since 2005 which is very tiny compared to you, perspective is hard and impossible and can make student frustrated only if the student started on the wrong foot and learning from wrong sources with wrong sequence in curriculum order, that's why it is very dangerous to study it as a self-taught material perspective Spells should be taught by Gandalf :P and the funny fact after learning it the right way it turned out i was familiar with the perspective since i was born and since i had started seeing the world with my eyes, it turned out i was able to recognize the perspective language long time ago but i wasn't able yet to write it on paper

Hello Marshall! I'd like to ask you something. Would you recommend for a beginner to learn perspective and anatomy at the same time? I'm kind of overwhelmed with the incredibly useful contents You and Proko provide, and I can't really decide whether I should follow the anatomy series that Proko is doing right now, or that I should just stick to drawing cubes, and objects, rather than people. Thank you!
@MarshallVandruff
@MarshallVandruff 9 лет назад
I think it's best to study them alongside each other because they are interrelated. It may not seem so - buildings and boxes seem so different from torsos and hands, but Proko is going about it in the tradition of the old masters - learning the body and how to show it "in space". You could spend a year on both subjects, more or less alongside each other, each contributing to the other.

Looking at the head as a box instantly helped me tie things together... Even though I studied the planes of the face and how to draw features before that, it was still hard to place them right. And perspective is like instant help. You don't even need to know perspective perfectly in case of the head, just know where approximately will the lines converge, but it's a big-big help. Shows how useful perspective is. I think Loomis even said that it's probably the most important subject for an artist. PS Sorry for intervening.

Great information Marshall, Thank you for sharing. In Italy ,the school day is from 8am to 12pm. This information is taught to every student at the 6th grade level. one point and two point perspective. We were building architectural models of existing buildings, cathedrals, castles from copies of actual floor plans. That was back in the early 70's. This information should be part of the curriculum in elementary schools in America. It will give every student a different perspective on life and nurture artistic creativity at a young age. The people that are in control of the curriculum of the public school system in America are completely and thoroughly incompetent and are detrimental to the education and welfare of the children in America. So sad.
