As someone who works from home, this really helped. Given that I have no commute, I’ll use lower km’s/year as a big bargaining point. I was always under the impression that leasing never leaves you a winner, but I think I can make a case in my scenario.

@@wolfrig2000you pay interest on your loan, you’re financing the amount needed to cover the depreciation, tax, and fees. $25,000 Car sale with a 63% residual, says the car buyout in 36 months is $15,750. So this means 37% depreciation is $9250 which is the portion you’re (“renting”) buying. Add on any tax and fees. your loan APR/ money factor will impact this amount.

Sales tax is another key factor to consider. Most states charge sales tax only on the down payment, the monthly depreciation, and the eventual buy-out, versus paying sales tax on the entire purchase price when buying.

Hey I was also trying to lease a car. So is paying 3000 down. Worth it? And how much payment does it decrease as a a monthly installment? Which car did you buy? And what was the estimated residual value? And at what interest rate did you buy it?
@nat29sal
@nat29sal 2 года назад
You’re right- there are no incentives or any lease cash being offered. Dealerships are not trying to negotiate because they know the demand for new cars are high- so basically if you don’t want to pay, someone else will. I just leased a new BMW and put $ down to lower my payment and pay taxes, etc. upfront. People will tell you you can get a zero down lease but if you get a $50,000 with a 58% residual, your payment is based on 30,000 for 36 months, which is ~800 a month. If you’re ok with paying that great- if not, need to put $ down.

There is never a mandator down payment on a lease. As with a finance, the requirement for a down payment on a lease is determined by the lender based on the lessor's credit profile. Just a risk analysis by the lender. A down payment is often included in lease advertisements to reach the advertised monthly payment. Without that down payment the monthly payment will be higher.

I told them I've worked in corporate finance for a decade and am now a licensed investment banker. They could not break me. @rich068
@rich068 2 года назад
@@bschlach man there's very few cars out there that are good for the buyer. Almost any car depreciates immediately as soon as you drive off the lot. Buy outright and you're instantly out money Finance and you're out your down payment plus you're upside down on a car untill you have so little left that you may have the slightest bit of "equity" but by that point how many miles have you put on? How much maintance is needed and what general condition is the car in? With a lease you get a car during its most reliable stage... sure you don't own it at the end but you're also not upside down on a car loan and sometimes leases won't diminish as much as initially thought. I like Dave Ramsey on some topics but a car is almost never an asset and almost always a liability. So why not pay for the least maintenance and best condition without having the commitment of a car that depreciates.

I've been leasing since 1998. I've usually just turn in my vehicle at end of lease and get a new model of the same vehicle. That scenario changed twice when I stopped leasing Subaru vehicles and went to Hyundai. Then I went from sedan to crossover. Now, I'm doing a lot of research between EV (nope!), hybrid (Toyota Corolla Cross? Maybe), and another ICE crossover. Leaning towards the 2024/25 Kona as my 3rd Kona lease as I like the redesign and get discounts for loyalty. If I go Toyota, then I settle for a less-inspiring interior for better mpg, but I drive under 5,000/year, so mpg is irrelevant right now. I always do the math beforehand, but now, post-pandemic, I can choice the color and refuse options that the dealer wants to throw in to jack up price. I can walk away now.

This is probably the best video I've seen that breaks down a lease, thank you for the information. One question though how much does all this have to do with your credit score? I'm assuming it impacts the numbers since your financing the depreciation?

I made a lease contract in December 2018 for a Toyota Corolla year 2019 for 3 years.Paying $262 monthly until now.Total car cost was $21K in that time.Now if I want to pay it off and buy it, the cost is $16K.I was checking Carvana and they are offering me $18K for the car,they get the lease,pay Toyota 16K and give me the rest (2K) equity.How you see it?

@@Glad2BGolden It was hard for me to choose to buy used or lease but had bad luck with a recent used buy so🤷. Almost got the rav 4 lease the payments would have been $425 but that's with a lot paid up front ..figured I'd save the $70/month with a Camry. Don't get a Kia or a Hyundai SUV we had engine problems with our Tuscon @80,000 miles and oil problems with a Sportage at 100,000. It appears car buying or leasing always sucks unless you are an expert.

Great content! Thank you for this, Ryan! If you could add a little more guidance in shopping the insurance upsells, that will be great for newbies like me to gain an idea on the ballpark number that we should be spending on these.

If you're talking about pothole insurance, paint stuff, limited damage, extended warranty and whatever else the dealership wants to throw in generally the answer is $0. Often your own insurance will cover those type of things and most of the time they're just needless money makers like VIN etching and what not. The exceptions IMO is when the offer has real value and was sincerely offered.
