How to leash train your dog using a long line is the best way to teach your dog loose leash walking skills. In this video, shot at a local animal shelter, I demonstrate the technique for my class.
All of the basics of using solid dog training skills to engage and train the dog are included. This is a shorter version of the complete lesson which is available in my member section at:

Great video! There's nothing wrong with your normal videos but it's twice as valuable watching you just work a dog that's not one of yours while explaining to people. Because the process is even clearer.

That's what I'm talking about. Excellent video and more interesting because after you teach you called some body to do it. Also was so funny when you said if some one do it wrong then is 5 push up. That is reminded me the Army on Basic Training.

Great video! I believe a long leash is a MUST HAVE for training dogs to walk on a loose leash and recall.

nice job. i've done somthing similar and you need patience when you get a new dog that is somewhat out of control or never walked nicely. This dog was already somewhat trained but the approach doesn't change. i remember teaching an adult German Shepherd to walk nicely on a lead. it took hours of patience but eventually it paid off.

What if your dog keeps going in front of you? In this video the dog already seems to know what to do and always trails behind you. I can't get my dog to not shoot in front of me from the get go.

I have weakness on my left side and I have a Great Dane (9mos) so I have to do all my training and work on right side even though I'm right hand dominant. She's being trained as a mobility dog so I have to train her to the side I'll be able to brace on.

What tips do you have on walking multiple Dogs? Have a puppy and a 2yr old that always tangle up and pull when together but when separate they are fine. Appreciate your vids, not sure how I came across them but they’ve been extremely helpful with the new puppy.

What would you do with a dog who is heavily distracted by scents / other dogs in this situation? I just started walking a dog who pulls hard and constantly on a leash, super high energy, and bolts over to any dog he sees. I can only train him in public spaces, like parks. I've tried the technique in your video, but he only pulls on the long line the whole time, trying to get at ground scents or things in the distance.

I have a question, I have a Boston Terrier he is 1 year old and I'm trying to train him to be in my side at Hell command. He doing fine not at 100% maybe at 50%. The thing is if he see children next to him he not came out of control and start sniffing and kicking and he pull the leach very hard like he want to jump on the people. What can I do to correct this bad behavior? Thanks

I have two German shepherds. #1 is trained to be on my left #2 I just got him, he appears to be trained for the right side. Is there an advantage to having one dog on each side of me or should I try to have two dogs up to the left of me...... and if so, how do I get them both to heal on my left hip because one dog will be in the way of the other?

I really want to teach my dog better leash walking but I worry that our walks are also his bathroom breaks (apt life). How do mix this with them being able to move off the sidewalk if we are walking for a bathroom break?

This is great, though for high drive dogs (we have a high drive golden) who constantly wants to pull and be in front. How would this look differently- I notice this dog is at a slower pace. Our 1 year old pup is very food motivated which helps but curious if you have any thoughts (or I probably should just join the patreon and ask with more context 😀) thanks for the video!

Looks the same. The about turns put the dog into position. Actually works more effectively on higher drive dogs.

Can you tell me the reason why we always have dogs on out left side? I've never heard that
@errhka
@errhka 4 года назад
It comes from old hunting custom. Most people are right handed shooters - so they would have their gun on their right side and the dog is safer on the left
@acacia8855
@acacia8855 4 года назад
It's an old age practice, with many reasons. Like leaving the right hand open for hand signals mainly in obedience and hunting sports.
@BeauOnTheGo_DC
@BeauOnTheGo_DC 4 года назад
It’s an ancient custom for dogs and horses because on the left they stay out of the way of swords, guns, etc. Walk the dog on the left, saddle a horse, mount a horse all on the left.

Robert Cabral I was to vague in my comment. I own a German Shorthair (Pointer). He is being trained as a hunting dog. It is a Individuum with an extremely high drive. He would want to work all day every day. To keep him happy we train every day at least four or five times a day for approx. 15 min. We basically follow balanced training guidelines. As you can imagine he is a well trained dog. BUT when we go to the woods it is almost impossible to keep the dog under control. On the road he walks beside me with or without leash. As soon as he gets ahead I correct him so most of the time his head is next to my left leg. In the forest though, he puts down his nose and follows a warm lead. As long as the dog is under maximum pressure and as long as I correct him I manage to get the leash lose for a minute or so until he starts again to tear on the leash. I tried it with corrections and treats. Recently I had a sausage in my hand and I stuck it right in front of his nose. The only thing he could think of was the hog lead he found. He didn’t even bother biting into the sausage. This dog has the potential to become a wonderful hunting companion. He learns fast and is willing to work. But if I don’t manage to control his drives the dog is wasted.

Dog walks opposite of your strong hand. If you are left handed the dog should walk on the right. This allows access to your weapon...all these techniques were taken from working dogs

@JamezGrimm
@JamezGrimm 4 года назад
HesedHof Nah, he put the leash on her himself. A lot dogs have some type of training before they were abandoned in shelters. If you watch the video you’ll see him setting the stage by giving her treats and making him worth following. When he does the loose leash training she has to be corrected. If you watch his other videos you’ll see him working with shelter dogs that aren’t nearly as trained and they also conform to the balanced training. However, if you feel that you know better than a world class trainer, please upload your own dog training videos so we can see a master at work. :)
