How to teach hand signals and positions to your dog will help you better communicate with your dog. This is also a skill that you can use if you are competing in obedience and to impress your friends.
In this video I cover the topic of keeping your dog in position by using a training aid as well as the very first hand signal "SIT." The full version of this video can be found in my member section:

Great video! I love to see very well trained dogs making little mistakes. It's a great signal to show that the trainer is not heavy handed as to make a dog become scared of giving behaviours activelly.

My German shepherd is turning 6 months, thank you so much for all you taught me. He's still young so he still likes to play but its working slowly. He knows sit, leave it, up, go get it, and stay. We're working on down.

I taught my dog both. First of all it's really hard to teach verbal commands without gestures, because you intuitively add gestures anyway. Second it's really nice to command a dog silently, for when you're in conversation or at a distance. Ye, the dog has to watch you, but if you do your job right they do that a lot anyway. And you can add a verbal cue like a whistle that draws their attention.

Once again I must say your training techniques are simply amazing. This is probably one of the best video footages explaining the difference between verbal and hand signals I've seen it in a while thus also using a great dog next to compliment your training he's awesome. In a matter of minutes you can get your own one that was interested in a German Shepherd it would make one think twice and decision-making on what type of Shepherd. Yours is absolutely beautiful, thank you🤔. Have the knowledge of a second language and using that to implement in your training is very ingenious

Yes I agree I find that using signs to reenforce what I'm teaching my wee j.r.t helps tremendously she looks carefully for the next sign to let her know when she can move on to something else jrts as I'm sure you know have a pleothera of energy but somewhat short attention span using signs has made a very positive difference in our training/play &learning times thank you so much!

I can not believe I do the same hand signal for sit...I can't remember where I picked that up but yay! I also use a fist for sit as well. Dunno where I picked this up. Right arm across chest for come. I use lots of hand signals. They come in handy communicating with 2 dogs who have a hard time focusing, there is just an awful lot of stimulus for these two HIGH HIGH HIGH drive boys!! And physical signals seem to get their attention when they are fully charged. Spitting the treats is a POWERFUL tool! Wow, what a difference! I

I've been using a rectangle of mat with rolled edges on the long sides to act as bumpers for working on signal exercises. We struggle with keeping the rear end in line with the front through multiple position changes because of the long, flexible caboose of the Borzoi, and the mat has been helpful to keep her body straight while preventing the creeping.

Hi there! Thank you so much for all your K9 wisdom. It has made my life so much easier. I don’t know if you answer questions in your comments but I have a 5 month old shar pei + GSD mix who is very fearful on walks and around strangers. Do you have any recommendations on how to boost his confidence around strangers on walks and around public spaces? I have been working everyday on socialising him and once he meets a stranger he doesn’t display any fearful behaviour. I ignore or correct the behaviour and keep moving but it seems to be making him think we’re running away from something rather than ignoring it. Thank you so much for any tips!

Mine's hearing abilities are worn off also, especially when there is a lot of ambient noise, like cars around her. For now it is sufficient if I raise my voice then, but I also introduced hand signals which I use simultaneously.

I talk with my hands a lot in general and realized I was unintentionally teaching my mal-gsd pup (he’s 10 weeks old) hand signals at the same time as verbal commands. He’s so damn smart I wanted to see if he knew what my hand movements meant and he followed 4 commands quite well. Only a tiny amount of hesitation. Now I teach him a combo of both at the same time and and switch it up without warning. It’s like a game for him 🧠

Great idea with the PVC. Could it work behind the dog do you think? I have the opposite problem particularly up close. She's very high drive and in a sit she shuffles away from me in excitement/anticipation for the next command or reward.

Very helpful video. I think hand signals are so important I had a 15 year deaf dog it helps so much. I have a question my pup knows the commands. I would like to teach him the down command as he is walking across the lawn to stop and go into a down position. He will not stop he walks all the way to me and then lays down. Is this something I can teach him? Possible video?Thanks

Has it ever been an issue using German and English for commands? Specifically stand and shtay
@bandoggebreeders
@bandoggebreeders 4 года назад
Why should there be? To you (a human) those Sounds correspond to 'German' or 'English' words, which in turn, form part what you recognize as a Language (in conjunction with a variety of other constructs). To the dog, they remain sounds. You can employ 1, 2, 3 sounds to cue a single behaviour in a form that is identical, e.g. a 'Standing position' ...or you can use multiple sounds to cue variations of a behaviour such as heeling (formal with eye contact, contact with target focus, left side, right side, between the legs, switched). You can also employ a sound e.g. 'Halt' which would be context influenced, i.e. remain still and in-position at the point at which that sound is heard; which may correspond to a stand, a sit, a down. The primary potential for confusion comes from either words too similar as to be easily confused, or the use of common tongue sounds that are regularly provided out-of-context resulting in confusion (e.g. used in proximity to the dog, but not directed at it, or using 'down' to tell a dog not to jump up, when you also tell it 'down' to lay down).

I have to disagree with what you said in the beginning for the dog not seeing your hand signals. A dog's Field of View is up to 270 degrees, that means the dog can always see you. Out of experience with my dog, if he "doesn't see you" he doesn't want to see you. Unless the dog is out of sight, around the corner for example.

🤔 It's kind of funny how there's people that would foam-up negative commentary about animal treatment, and yet we have prisions. Dogs can learn "do's and dont's" just like humans do.; the levels of consistency of repetition for retention is where we differ.

the command isn't SCHTAY... it's STEH, which means stand, exactly what I'm asking the dog to do. Most trainers don't use a stay command, so BLEIB would be un-necessary... hope that clears it up! Not sure why hearing a word would be "disturbing" to hear...
