To the people who do not know anything about fishing, or fishing for sockeye. 1. In certain watersheds in Alaska it is legal to snag for some salmon species. As is dipnetting. Just like it is still legal for First Nations to sein/gill net. 2. Fishing for sockeye is virtually impossible to do in salt and fresh water, when they are preparing to spawn, 90% of fishermen who target sockeye/Kokanee floss for them. These people are also doing it for food and not sport. I will also point out that if these were Native Americans/First Nations doing this, wich they also do, you would NOT Dare to say anything. Thumbs up for providing for yourself.

You’re welcome. It feels good to be home for a bit. Alaska videos always get mixed reviews from the RV audience that follows our channel. Some love it, others hate it and ONLY want RV content. The solution, stay true to ourselves and whatever the heck we want!

Leave your stringer in the water and bring an ice chest and buy ice if you catch a limit. Those fish will stay plenty cold in the water while your fishing. And realistically you will catch all your fish in a 30 minute time period. When it’s on, IT’S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG.

@outliersoverland
@outliersoverland 4 года назад
Generally speaking the reds show up at the beginning of June. I suppose one does have a chance of catching a silver on a lure from the beach in Seward. If you work it long enough you can catch one. The silvers will show up at the culvert in town at the end of August as they were imprinted to those waters. Then you can snag them. Hope this helps.
@littlegoobie
@littlegoobie 3 года назад
in all seriousness, if you want to snag silvers, go to Valdez between the end of Aug and mid Sept after the crowds disappear. The silvers are still cruising the shoreline in massive groups and with good glasses on, you can see them. No wasting time. The limit is 6, the fish are big (you can pick the one you want if you're good), and you'll limit out pretty fast when the light/visibility conditions are good.
@ranmangolf
@ranmangolf 4 года назад
Thanks for the video tips. I am looking to do a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska and was wondering if any salmon could be caught like this the first week of August. I am traveling by plane which means I will need to purchase a telescopic pole for the suitcase. Your thoughts on a telescoping pole? I'm a small mouth bass fisherman, never fished for salmon, but looks fun and my wife loves salmon.
@outliersoverland
@outliersoverland 4 года назад
Thanks for watching. Snagging is a very specific type of fishing and only legal in a small handful of places and that’s only when the fish are running. There are dozens of places with regular fishing opportunities in August. I personally think telescoping rods are junk. They would never hold up the Alaska grade fishing. Buy a relatively stiff two piece rod and travel case. You won’t be the only one carrying one onto the plane or strapping it to luggage.
@ranmangolf
@ranmangolf 4 года назад
Thanks for the tips. I was watching and learning a little more from you and was wondering if a certain color of braid is preferred to not spook the fish. I was thinking about using 20 pound test. Thanks again.

I don't care for the blind snagging, but the targetted snagging is crazy fun and it takes some practice to get good at it. ...when you just find a nice little place to stand and stare at the water until you see something coming by. You'll need a nice pair of polarized glasses. Of course this isn't the way it works when you're standing in the water with waders, but there are locations where you can do it that way and it's the most fun.

@littlegoobie
@littlegoobie 5 лет назад
seiners ran out to scoop them out but you should have been fine before labour day. I forget when the commercial boats went out but i was surprosed by how many there were, maybe close to 15 along with 3 big tenders, that's nuts for that tiny bay. It didn't have much effect on fishing if you had the time. My friends and i caught quite a few, many days of limits mixed in with days we got lazy and stopped fishing early.

What do you mean by getting your hook fouled on your line, why you use a steal leader?

The hook becoming fouled means it gets twisted up in the line and rendered ineffective. The steel leader is rigid and prevents that from happening.
