Love all your vids..it isnt hard to turn the bolt if you put a jack under the front enough to get the weight off it thats what nissan told me you were actually supposed to do
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 4 года назад
Ive done it that way before too. Easier to turn the bolt...but more cumbersome to check ride height each time having to lower the back.

I have a 2001 frontier. I measured the rake where you said to and it’s just over 1 1/3 inches from front to rear. But I wondered how to tell if the rear is sagging from worn out leaf springs? I just bought it at 190k miles but have no idea if they’ve been replaced. He definitely took care of it so they may have but I don’t know. I’m trying to decide how much lift to do on the rear but am not sure because I don’t know if it’s the proper ride height. Do you know what the distance from the center of hub to fender should be?
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 2 года назад
I don't know the right height for a frontier. I would first decide how much you are going to lift the front torsion bars (are you getting UCAs? Just adjusting stock suspensiom?) Omce you answer that question, you can figure out how much to lift the rear to get the desire stance / nose down rake.

I have a question. My 2000 xterra on stock height had a dramatic positive camber. Is this what I need to do? Since new nothing has ever been done. Just shocks replacement from worn ones. I've just noticed how funny it looks. The tops of the tires look like a old vw beetle when you lift it off the ground at all times. And I'm seeing outer tire wear. I recently had an engine replaced. So maybe they messed with it somehow at the shop? Any help would be great.
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 3 года назад
Measure the four corners of your vehicle and see if it's leaning one way or the other. Most likely you need an alignment and a steering system refresh. Camber can go out due to your idler arm, center link, upper control arms, or ball joints. Most likely at 20 years its a combination of slop in all those parts that contribute. I have 2 older videos...one about heavy duty steering systems and one about lifted alignments (which applies to non lifted vehicles too). I would start there.

@XterraRob
@XterraRob 3 года назад
If the adjuster lever is bottomed out and hitting the top of the frame rail/cross member, then you would need to "re-index" your torsion bar. Basically remove them from the anchor and rotate it a spline or two away so you have more room to adjust it upwards. I have an older video on that process you can look for.

In a theoretical perfect world...yes go get an alignment. In practice...not a lot. If you have newer tires that were expensive...probably worth the alignment. If theyre older, let it ride and monitor tire wear to see if you need alignment before getting nre tires.

I think what you are describing is a stripped out torsion bar anchor bolt. Do a google search for that part and look at the photos. The bolt that holds the anchor in place will often times get damaged when they are very old, and they get adjusted after being stuck for so long.

Its purely optional and reversible. If you want to lift the front a little...go ahead and give it ago. Dont like it? Turn the wrench in the opposite direction and bring it back down. No issues with ride quality from stock control arm adjustments.

Yeah you really need to loosen the jam nuts to avoid damaging the threads. Pb blaster on the bolt threads and let it soak it down. Propane bottle torch for 30 bucks at lowes or home depot. Heat up the jam nut for 60 secomds or so. Put a properly fitting wrench on the nut and hit the wrench with a 3 pound sledge hammer. Also...lefty loosey. From the perspective of being above the bolt looking down at the nut. If you are on your back looking up at it....it will be in the opposite direction sinve you are working on the back side of what you are looking at. Be careful with torches and hot hardware after torching...since you know...its fire.

No need to...you can if you want though. It takes some weight off the torsion bars so the bolt is easier to turn. But if it turns freely without binding up, and you can muscle the wrench around...no issues. But then you have to raise the front, lower, check and repeat. Its a bit tedious.

Hello rob, I was wondering if you could help me out with a bit of an issue I am having with my xterra. As of now I have a 2 inch body lift as well as torsion bar crack up front to eliminate uneven rake front to back. My front end currently sits about a half inch to an inch lower than the rear. The issue I am having is that the bump stop gap on the driver side is less than the gap on the passenger side, I believe this is what is causing a clanking sound coming from my front end whenever I take a medium to hard right turn and even sometimes left. It’s important to note that my tie rod ends, upper/lower ball joints, and sway bar end links/bushings are all brand new as of last month. It’s also important to note that both bump stops are missing (they must have came out as some point in the recent months). Could this be the cause for the clanking sound? Or is it possible that I already wore down a tie rod end since I am running 33’s. Why is one side of the bump stop gap smaller than the other if my rig is even in height (driver to passenger side) and my tire pressure is all the same? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Sorry if this message was all over the place.
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 2 года назад
Question 1: Regarding an uneven bump stop gap, its just tolerances in the overall frame weldment. By design, it should generally be symmetrical. But in reality, nothing is perfect. Thats why the torsion bars and front end alignment are adjustable, to compensate for imperfecions.
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 2 года назад
Question 2: Regarding the clanking sound. Bump stop contact usually occurs during a bump that causes a vertical impulse, which then causes the suspension to bounce. Having the rubber bump stop missing can cause a noise like that. Do you have a stock steering system, or heavy duty system to handle 33s? What is the bump stop gap that you have on each side (from underside of upper control arm to frame since you don't have the rubber bump stop anymore)?

@XterraRob
@XterraRob 2 года назад
2 inch is probably too much from an alignment and tire wear stand point. But the shocks won't limit your torsion bar lift or give you more. A 2wd xterra doesnt have front CV axles to worry about though...so that helps from a lift angles standpoint.

Just did both of my lower CT arms and complete front end replacement (Balls, Ties, links ect). The simple way to measure your FRONT height on a 3 inch lift(w/33in tires) is 7cm from top of the tire to bottom of wheel well. No confusion running from front to back, side to side. Just 7cm from rubber to metal ;) Adjust accordingly PS... dont use an impact like I did lol You'll strip the bolt before you get to 7cm. Patience is your friend on this one. ;)
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 3 года назад
If you like your stance...right on. Multiple ways to approach this. I still recommend bump stop gap and the floor board seams. If you are trying to get a level stance front to back, you cant rely on that to compare rear fender arches to front fender arches...they are just cosmetic holes cut above the tires, but the height from tire to fender is not necessarily the same front to back for a level floor board and fenders have almost a quarter inch of slop in them to account for cosmetic adjustments needed for panel gaps based on part to part variation. And I may have 3" control arms...but you gotta stop when your bump stop gap gets too narrow regardless of whether you hit the full 3" lift. Just depends how precise you want to control your stance I guess. Better yet, put a 4 foot level on a rock slider front to back. Multiple ways to approach this but ive always defaulted back to the seams and bump stop method if I care about precision.
@MrGodrigo
@MrGodrigo 3 года назад
Not disputing any of the advice you're offering. In my experience though, mentioned that I stripped the adjustment bolt and it left me exactly 1/2inch out on passenger side. I had to leave it at that height until I replaced the pin. When I went in for my alignment, the shop phoned me and told me that I was 1/2inch low as well. Somehow our measurements matched up so I feel it was safe to assume that it's an acceptable way to measure imo. Note.. I dont have wheel flares or any trim, my fenders are "naked" so to say so it was simple to hit the metal trim. I never had to adjust my rears so they are as is.

Right on thanks for commenting. I've seen a lot of ... Wonkiness ... On lift measurements on the first gen xterras from mine to other friends ... big nose down rakes to left to right rakes, different bump stop gaps left/right for same ride height etc. Spent lots of time chasing tails dialing adjustments in to find out one fender is shifted up or back after a snorkel install or when repaired after a wreck from a body shop with previous owner, etc. Floor boards dont move as much but it sounds like you got what you needed! And... Stripping bolts suck! Thanks for watching my dude.

@XterraRob
@XterraRob 4 года назад
Its all a matter of preference. In a theoretical world...you touch a torsion bar, you need an alignment. In a practical sense, depends on your risk tolerance. The risk is tire wear from a mis-aligned front tire. If your tires are older anyway...or they were cheaper tires and not high end expensive off road tires...then make the adjustment and monitor and see what happens. If you have brand new expensive tires, then get an alignment to protect your investment.

does messing around with the torsion bars interfere with the alignment of the vehicle??
@XterraRob
@XterraRob Год назад
The answer is "yeah...but..." Technically your alignment angles will change any time you adjust a torsion bar...its just geometry. Do you need to pay to get an alignment done? It depends if you want to or not. If you adjust only slightly...it may not change enough to know any better unless you use a laser rack to measure. The question reqlly comes down to how much do you like your current set of tires? Every day driver with basic tires you dont care much about and you only adjusted a small amount? Maybe keep driving as is and watch out for uneven tire wear. Full suspension lift with 1000 dollars worth of rubber on your rims? Get a proper alignment to protect your investment in tires.

Another great video, Shoot i'm only at 20 and 5/8 to the bottom of my door in the front lol. I cant seen to figure out where to go from here. I still have everything stock including the bump stops, the drivers side is at its limit with maybe a 1/2 gap and the passenger side has about 3/4 gap left. the torsion anchor seem to be just about at its limit as to how much adjustment is left. Is it time for reindexting or what? thanks Rob
@XterraRob
@XterraRob 4 года назад
If you are at the bump stop gap limit...then thats it. Want more? Suspension lift control arms (and steering reinforcement) + re index and then a body lift. Thats about all you can do short of solid axle custom builds. Also...you mention the anchor is maxed out inside the cross member...re index will hive you more room at the anchor to adjust...but your bump stop gap is still the limiting factor with stock control arms.

Yes you can lower it the same way! Lefty loosy! You can drop it as much as the extra bolt that sticks up over the cross member. If you want more drop, youd have to remove the torsion bar and rotate it in the anchor a spline or 2 to allow it to drop more. My alignment is perfectly fine now. If I were to level my 2003 Xterra, would I have to do an alignment?

It depends on what you want to do. Leveling the front end WILL change the alignment geometry. Maybe not much. Your angles may still be green. But they will be different. If you have expensive and newer tires, it is probably worth it to prevent possible tire wear. If your tires are old, worn, and just basic cheap commuter tires, maybe dont bother and watch your tires for uneven wear.
