I’ve had a gas fire place for years in the house I’m in, with no clue how to use it. After watching this video I think I should just stick to using lots of blankets lol
As a gas fireplace tech, don't use your gas fireplace if it looks like that. That pipe he points out should be buried in sand. You should not be able to see that pipe! The sand slows down the gas so it doesn't flare on your hands like this. It's better to set a lit match down by the pipe, then turn the gas. always have flame there before you introduce fuel! This is a fireplace that needs serviced.
If the pipe is buried in sand, how do the flames penetrate thru to get the fire in the fireplace? Can you operate it with the pipe uncovered, as long as you’re careful lighting it?
@@veronicathouin6176 the gas get dispersed through the sand, instead of rushing out of the tube. I was confused with ours and why I couldn’t see the pipe but glad to learn it was the right setup.
@@samanthatello7671 - thanks for clarifying that for me! Mine has no sand or anything covering the pipe, so I was surprised by the comments. Looks like I should get some sand and put it in.
You are supposed to keep the lighter lit next to the gas holes before you turn on the gas. Then when you turn it on you won't get a fireball in the face!
I express my thanks for the example in the video. I have read in the article to be wary how far you turn when using the fireplace lock, such as the more you turn in the direction you enable the gas the more gas you release.
Thanks. I have a Majestic SH 42 gas fireplace on my main level and there were no owner's manuals online or RU-vid videos specific to that fireplace. You are a lifesaver. Gonna go and light my fireplace now.
I just had my gas fireplace serviced and the guy taught me to slightly turn on gas for a few seconds, no more than 5, TURN IT OFF, then light it and slowly turn the gas back on. But we have sand, rocks, and embers at the bottom, so I don’t know if that makes a difference
Been living in my house for 10 years and never lit the fire place . My husband would have believe it's rocket science. I would love to sit by the fire place on cold winter nights !!!
Hi, do you need proper ventilation for this set up? I have a real wood burning brick chimney that was converted to gas but i think the vent that goes out to roof was blocked or sealed. I'm afraid to die of carbon monoxide
Newby here,, once it is lighted.. do you close the window doors or you keep them open? I am not sure what is a proper procedure.. When closed there is almost no heat... when open it is doing much better job.. I have a small kid and would want to keep it close if that's ok?
We have a ventless insert it’s working and the problem is? The flame goes out when we aren’t watching but the pilot stays on! I’ve had this happen several times and it’s worrisome because if I didn’t realize it went off and perhaps the pilot didn’t stay on not sure if that’s something as seniors we want to live with? We have been turning on manually because our remote needs replaced so that’s how I noticed it was going off without being switched off?? Do you have any idea if this is fixable?
I’m new to gas fireplace , what kind of logs 🪵 are you using in your place ? Not sure what to call them but I’m looking to use those logs 🪵 that you keep on burning over and over what do you call those and is it something I can use in a gas fireplace ? Thank you
I had no idea these logs stayed IN the fireplace. Even after the gas man and chimney sweep came and inspected my fireplace and told me the gas line was to pre-lite wood. It wasn’t until I watched this video that I realized I didn’t have to spend money on wood and I could put the fake logs back. 😀
Thank you!!! I finally got my fireplace working thanks to this video!! So what the purpose of the starter button that creates a spark. I didn't have to use it to start it. Thank you!!
Turn on gas then press the button to start a spark that ignites the gas that's the purpose of it maybe you try it if the gas doesn't ignite by itself and you did what the guy in the video did.
The button will be used for maybe the next time you lite a fire, say the next day, and you don't turn off the safety valve. The next time you will only need to use the button. Hipe this makes sense the way I said it, lol
Our gas company guy said to never turn the gas key on first and then stick the lighter in the FP, for you get the explosion that your video showed! Instead, you should light your flame and put it near the holes, and then, very slowly, turn on the gas key very gently
thanks for the helpful video! question if I leave the pilot light on all the time, how much of gas per month is that any idea? thanks. and I don't got the key, just use some wrench should work?
Okaythen001 my fireplace also got the valve key, so for our fireplace there are only 2 switches right? valve key and turn it on switch. no other switches?
When you open the flue/damper lever on the left side, does the damper physically open (vertical), whereby you can see up the chimney? Mine has about 20 hole vents around damper, but does not physically open.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm sorry to laugh. It's just that when I watched this I felt the same way! Like if I were to try this I'm pretty sure I'd be rushed to the hospital lol
I had a question I think I have the same fireplace and there is a knob sticking out on the bottom left corner that I have no Idea what it's for. Does yours have the same thing?
Helpful, but kinda careless. I have the same type of older setup. Only plan on running it if power goes out as we are set to have snow out here next week. Long stem flame should be on as you turn gas on just like lighting a gas stove pilot lite. Two person job unless you have a candle to keep near to keep fire going for ignite.
Thanks - you just saved me $100 by not needing to have a chimney professional come out to figure that out for me. One Q: would you ever use a wood or duraflame log with gas and the fake log that's already in there?
While I’m definitely no expert on this, I don’t think you’re supposed to use a Duraflame log in a gas fireplace. They’re actually kind of dangerous in that a film or whatever builds up into the chimney from them, which can then catch on fire at some point.
When your fireplace is lit and the wood is burning how can I stop that burning smell of the wood or is there some type of fire place accessories that is used to not have the smell of burning wood
@@daughtersofzion6072 Yea my wife pointed that out to me a few months ago. Here I assumed it was a unique key similar to a door, smooth brain in full display 😅
I’ve fireplace like this. I turned key down, and fireplace went OUT! Won’t like at all. DO YOU HAVE VIDEO OF HOW TO MANUALLY TURN ON PILOT LIGHT USING THE KNOBS INSIDE? Is my fireplace broken? Need for heat. When key is ON & I turn electrical switch, I do not hear anything. Pilot has never been off. It was VERY high in summer & I turned it 1/4 down. The fireplace was on. I did not turn it off. Then it died & tried the steps 6 times. TROUBLESHOOT? Thank you.
Such a simple problem i had.. and thanks to you a simple solution. I didn't even know what key to use. Thanks! haha always have an extinguisher ready! pretty funny.
How do I heat up my home with the gas log fireplace does the Flu say open I am asking because I had it on last night and it did not warm up the Room and the glass did not get hot because we had the flu open how should I do this
