In this video I show you how I turn an average living room into a cinematic shot. I go over techniques such as a cove light (what's that?!), day for night, motivating light and break it all down for you.

That final shot looks soooo good. I haven’t tried a cove yet, but I’m curious to do it. I reckon it might be difficult to gauge how bright the second and third key light should be. But I think you hit it right on the head here. Thanks for the detailed explanation and then the quick step by step demo at the end! Super helpful. =) =) =)

That person who gave a thumbs down may be has some eye problem. Fantastic content ! I like when tutors show the full setup that includes the full studio/room, coz most of the tutorial on RU-vid doesn't show the entire setup, they always show just the position of the light. Once again thanks man. :)

really good video. that cove lighting is the best. also, no one else on youtube explained that you should expose first for that back window, then get your lights to match up to that level. When i tried setting up prior to knowing that I could never really match because I was really starting with a different practical and then couldn't match it to my studio light to get a soft look.

This was the second video of yours I've watched. I really liked the overall setup breakdown and the 1 at a time additive steps of lighting to show how everything worked. Still I bet this video took over an hour to setup and then even more to do the talking head and edit. Great work. Thanks for making this.

Great video, Tyler. I never get sick of Cove lighting techniques on YT, as there's always so many variances. I actually REALLY like your lowkey at 4:04. Also, do you find that having your muslin properly laid out, with limited folds proves insignificant? The shot at 3:13 shows creases and folds with shadow, but the picture you rendered on your wife has really lovely highlight rolloff, so wondering if its inconsequential.
@MetropolisPictures

Ngl, I feel like the shadows on the face earlier were closer to Deakin. Great work though.

This was awesome dude, I've been playing with the cove light recently too. Can you do one of these on lighting for darkness? I do a lot of horror stuff and always have issues running into fixed pattern noise on my blackmagic pocket 4K. I'm just not sure the best amount of light to use/camera settings to get the cleanest image where shadows actually fall into darkness (as opposed to the blue-ish darkness look).

I like the concept of cove lighting and book lighting, but light spill always seems to be an issue with it bouncing everywhere. Without a bunch of grip gear, flags, etc. it seems like more trouble it’s worth. Maybe I’m missing something. Do you find that spill an issue when using these setups?
@TylerEdwards
@TylerEdwards Год назад
Yes spill has to be addressed if you want it controlled but if you are trying to keep light focused in one area, cove lighting wouldn’t be the most idea. Honestly a large softbox with a grid would be more ideal in many cases.
@pizzomedia7261
@pizzomedia7261 Год назад
@@TylerEdwards thanks! I’m quickly realizing that. I’m still learning how to block and shape light better. I really dig the lighting breakdowns. Thanks!
