Learn how to light a scene with candlelight and make it look beautiful and realistically lit by candles only. Lighting with candles is actually pretty simple once you know the basics. Candles have a warm color temperature usually around 1800 to 2000 kelvin. Adding candles to your scene can make it look very cinematic and interesting. Candles aren't just for pieces set back in the time of castles and knights. Candlelight is also used in post apocalyptic shows, romances and so many other genres!
Using candlelight to light your scenes, short films and other videos is pretty easy. Often times you can add extra film lights to help augment the candle light and make it look brighter and motivated. We also show you how to get a natural flicker effect from candles in your scene, the same flicker effect can be used for fires as well.

I really love how you lit this scene with the motivated light and even a gentle amount of camera movement. I thought it was a BBC period drama at first 😀

Thank you! I tried to make the light look as realistic and motivated in the scene as possible. haha! It totally looks like we're filming a re-enactment of some old history scene ha?

what's your lens aperture and camera iso? what camera are you using?
@chadwin
@chadwin 5 лет назад
Esteban Medrano I used the Sony a7s and Rokinon 50mm around f2.5. I cant remember the exact ISO but it wasn’t over 3000. I usually keep it pretty low to avoid any extra noise.

Question here maybe someone can answer.. I'm try to shoot some cinematic low light shots. Like a completely dark scene with one light source type stuff. For example - filming a candle burning. I'm using a sony a6400 and a sigma 30mm f1.4. I'm shooting with a really low ISO. I get a good looking scene with 1.4 aperture and ISO 100 but when I pull up the clips on my PC they're super grainy. My shadows are full of grain. How do people get their blacks to just be black? I don't need detail but I really don't need grain..
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
Greg Whiting it sounds like all of your settings are good in cam, but you can’t see the grain on your camera LCD cause it’s so small. Once you get in on a computer it’s easy to see. The best way to get rid of it is with a Noise Reduction plug in, like Neat Video. Or you can crush the blacks and sometimes that hides the noise
@GregWhiting
@GregWhiting 4 года назад
@@chadwin gotcha. So that's how people get the really low light stuff to look good? Or is there anything I'm missing in camera? I've been surprised how much grain I've been getting when my ISO is at 100 even in brighter low light conditions than trying to film a candle burning..
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
@@GregWhiting Yeah, you usually have to add some noise reduction in post to help clean up dark footage. What Frame rate and resolution are you filming in? If you're filming in 60 or 120, your shutter speed will be higher and noise/compression will be worse. Full frame cameras like the Sony a7s handle low light and noise Much better than my a6500 does.
@GregWhiting
@GregWhiting 4 года назад
@@chadwin I was experimenting shooting with different frame rates from 24 to 120 knowing that 24 should have the lowest amount of noise. I was shooting in 1080. I'll have to try 4k to see if that helps. I'm also really new to picture profiles. Would that make a difference?
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
Greg Whiting yeah, definitely give 4k a try. 1080p on the a6500 doesn’t look nearly as good. And yes, PP can def make a big difference in noise. Flatter PP’s like PP7, 8,9 and SLOG generally have more noise especially cause they have higher minimum ISO’s
