In today's episode, learn how to Light an Amazing Portrait with a low cost DIY Lighting Kit. Our kit is under $50!
Introduction to Portrait Lighting
If this is your first time using lights for a portrait, being able to see how the lights interact with your subject will amaze you! The slight movement of a light can have a large impact on the mood of your photo. When you are taking a portrait, everything should revolve around your subject. Your choice in lighting should match the tone of the subject.
What We Cover
In this photography episode, we go over the specific lights we chose for our DIY (Do It Yourself) lighting kit. We also cover some lighting basics and the purpose of each light we used. Then we give you some awesome tips on working with your subject. We cover some things you can do and say to make your subject feel more comfortable.
Stay tuned for our next episode as we edit one of these head shots. The RAW file that Aaron is editing will be available for you to download and follow along.

love the videos, but it's a bit disingenuous to claim the setup is under $50 if you neglect to add the C-stands - without those, it's just three lights laying on the floor.
@deasttn
@deasttn 7 лет назад
Shop the reject isle of the lumber store for boards costing about $0.25 and make something (you can build something for less than $10). Or splurge on a couple inexpensive light stands and some string.

Nice talk on cheep 3 point lighting, but i would find it much more use full if you explained how you propped up the lights on those stands (cause getting the lights to be were you want them is really more of a issue then finding the right lights for the job)

Would be nice to have the following: a parts list of all the equipment used a talk through on how to construct the lighting rig as shown some more technical specs on the lights themselves, e.g. what colour temperature to use, is it necessary to set a custom white balance, etc.
@pi1k
@pi1k 9 лет назад
Totally agree! I enjoyed this video as much as I do most of the stuff they put up. Nonetheless this was a little bit underwhelming,- the "Low Cost DIY Lighting Kit" was basically "buy 3 lights". No word on construction of the rig, or the cost of 3 light stands (plus a little bit of wood).
@Wappie21
@Wappie21 9 лет назад
pi1k i think this depends on the location you are shooting, you can do a lot with some strings, nails and tape. The white balance is diferent with every light. shoot in RAW to choose the white balance you like the most
@agoniavr
@agoniavr 9 лет назад
Loved the video but I agree with you, the tape trick is good but I'd also love to know the best way to set up a rig for chip, for it to be movable with ease with secure stands as shown in the video.
@MarioDiLeonardo
@MarioDiLeonardo 9 лет назад
If you shoot RAW you don't have to worry about the color temperature. You save all the information in your RAW file and will take care of this in post.
@pi1k
@pi1k 9 лет назад
***** yeah, you got a point there- of course the kit / rig depends on what you want to do and where you want to do it. but still: they could show at least how to build THEIR exact setupt (indoor portrait shooting). Please don't get this wrong- it's not the end of the world and of course most people can figure something out with common sense, but I feel that it would have been nice for total beginners for example =) (pls excuse possible flaws or typos- I just got up and my language skills are note totally awake yet ^^)

The Photoshop Tutorials are always awesome. Thanks. Nice break in getting back to lighting. Here's a thought on a tutorial (or series). "One Strobe, Two Strobe, Three Strobe, More!" This could be what you can do if you only had one strobe, or two, and what you could add to the lighting if you had a third or more strobes for lighting... As you demonstrated three lights today, and it was a great video. Keep up the great work, it's appreciated.

@mattboggs6304
@mattboggs6304 6 лет назад
Good tips, but its more like $50 for the lights, and $200-300 for the light stands and boom arm. Throw in a backdrop setup and you might as well just buy a home studio lighting kit. If you just want something cheap and nasty, for a few hundred bucks you can get 2-3 lights, stands for each one, plus umbrellas and/or softboxes all in the same kit. Depending on where you live, that might not be all that much more than what you would pay to get the "low cost DIY lighting" setup shown in the video.

Step 1 to great portraits: Spin your subject around and around until they gain that lovely green tint that we are all searching for. Step 2: Have him sign the dodgy model waiver immediately after spinning around a few dozen times. Step 3: Profit. :)

I've phlearned so much from you so far that I even hate to ask... But the thing I run in to more and more is space that can be used to take these awesome photos. Can't really be using a 10mm fisheye to take a portrait, you need that 50 or 70 mm... And what I've seen is that you guys have plenty of space. Any tips or workarounds? What could be a cheap way to rent or have a space? I know it can't be done in photoshop and every city and country is different but I'm sure a lot of people are having this same dilemma. Thanks. :)

@prominence2
@prominence2 8 лет назад
The only thing you guys forgot to mention is that cheap fluorescent lights have ugly spiked spectrum and that's the reason your model skin is earthy and brown. And that lamps with decent CRI wouldn't be that cheap at all. Of course these portraits are miles away from dead-ahead-flash pictures, but still there is a room for improvement in terms of color rendition.

I like to take pictures of people smiling. I always tell a joke to get them to laugh so it is more real. I don't want to be that photographer that takes school pictures where a lot of people don't smile I think that looks more unnatural than a fake smiling picture lol I like something more than just a blank face staring away from the camera lol it just to me looks like they are alienating themselves from the people who will look at the picture. "Like I want this picture to show to people but I don't want myself to be looking at them in the picture"

Great lighting setup for any studio. My setup is pretty similar, but I do like to mix in a little incandescent light as well to warm it up. I picked up a variety of colored bulbs on sale and use an old drafting table lamp (really long, adjustable arm for positioning) in order to do some nice tinted accents on the cheap. Hell I've been known to throw in some candlelight or even a lava lamp to hit the right effect.

Why is the ISO set to 500? Wouldn't that make the pictures somewhat noisy?
@tpain525
@tpain525 9 лет назад
Dexxter no joke if your camera gets noisy at 500 get a new one haha cause thats not super low but there shouldn't be nosy at ALL btw the lights hes using are as bright as a sudden flash so the ISO HAS to be a higher to compensate for having less light.
@sbalogh53
@sbalogh53 9 лет назад
Junior525 You are right. I probably should get a new camera. I have an old Sony from 2002 so it is getting a little old in the tooth. I am not a professional photographer or even a serious hobbyist so getting a new good quality camera has been low on my list or priorities. But I think the time is fast approaching when I need to get one of the fancy DSLR cameras I have been kinda drooling over. ;)
@lesliesavage9229
@lesliesavage9229 8 лет назад
+Dexxter Also note the slow shutter speed and open aperture to let in as much light as he can. This is the disadvantage of using fluorescent lights, because they do not put out as much light as flash units.
