Great video, love the studio setup and colors and your energy is awesome. I have no doubt you will be successful. I’m really impressed with this 2 video series and your explanation of color theory and how to set up lighting rather than just telling us what to buy. Please make a part three for those of us who wear glasses and want to film videos without glare without spending $$!
@TheKevinShen
@TheKevinShen 5 лет назад
Hi Stella!! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such an encouraging comment :) That's a great question! In my experience, you can adapt your setup for glasses by simply making sure that your lights are at least 45 degrees off-axis from your camera. Or I guess to be more specific, if you're facing the camera and that's 12 o'clock, make sure that your key light (the one lighting your face) is either around roughly the 9-10 o'clock position or 2-3 o'clock. That should prevent any glasses glare for most of the time unless you turn your head far to the left or right. Hope this helps! :)

Kevin, how much wattage should I use in a small room if I want to have my face light properly but my background dark since I have some color LEDs on my bookshelf? Also, I tried using two light sources with daylight bulbs, and my face look too white, even if the keylight was stronger than my fill.
@TheKevinShen
@TheKevinShen 4 года назад
Hello! Good question - I'm not sure I can say exactly how much wattage to use - it depends on the placement of your lights, the color of your background, the type of lighting you're using, etc. But a good rule of thumb is to give yourself time to experiment with it, move lights around and try experimenting with different placements even if you don't think it'll look good - that's what I do before all my shoots and I often stumble into new lighting setups that I didn't expect to work even better than my original plan.

Hah. The Holmo lamp. My girl is getting two of these. Just so everyone knows, you can get them without a bulb for $10-12 from Ikea directly but they charge $9 for shipping. If you use Hue, for example, you don't need the included bulb.

Love your setup. The shaking table and computer are distracting tho. Rembrandt lighting seems to be much more flattering on men than women IMO. I think it's cause we like the chiseled look on guys more than girls. It just seems to harsh and not as flattering on the female face.

Nice video. Does the dark blue colour of your wall attract some digital noise in your footage? If it does, do you use a denoiser to clean it off. II noticed a lot of digital noise while you were showing the behind the scenes with your iphone which is probably due to the dark blue colour and also the small sensor of the phone's lens.

@TheKevinShen
@TheKevinShen 5 лет назад
Hey thank you so much, Israel!! :)) That means a lot! Oooh great question - not to sound overly self-promotional haha but I actually put together an hour-long course with 30+ sections talking about my exact settings if you're curious to dig into the specifics! But to answer your question, I usually shoot in a custom flat profile with shutter speed of 1/50 for 24fps shooting or 1/200 for 120fps, and roughly f/1.8 - f/4 aperture, and a fixed ISO that I dial in by looking at the histogram to make sure I'm not overexposing or underexposing anything. If I'm shooting outdoors with unpredictable lighting, I usually leave ISO on auto since it's more important for me to capture everything visible than to have a perfect shot where there is no ISO flickering as it automatically adjusts every now and then.
@TheKevinShen
@TheKevinShen 5 лет назад
oh! and sorry to answer your other question, the lenses I use mostly are the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II and the Canon 20mm f/2.8. I love my 50mm f/1.8 though too :) I also have a few other lenses as well for specific use-cases like getting extra large bokeh by using longer focal length zoom lenses.

Great video and very helpful, as I'm wanted to do this now. I am considering the camera course you're offering also. Hey Charles, thanks for being here brother! :) That’s a great question. The features you’re probably looking for are 1) a flipout screen so you can see yourself when vlogging, 2) an external mic jack, 3) and maybe some image stabilization if you want to get fancy. Depends on your budget too. I’d say that #1 is the most important probably. Also consider what size would be too much trouble to carry around. They say that the best camera is the one you have on you at the time :)

What if you wear glasses, wouldn’t that 45 degree angle cause the light reflection in your glasses?
@TheKevinShen

Hey great question! It depends on the curvature of your glasses lenses and how wide your light source is. In theory, if your glasses are completely flat and pointed directly at the camera, then there should be no reflection since the light would bounce at a 45-degree angle off your glasses and never hit the camera sensor. But if your glasses are at all curved (which I think most are) and if you have a huge light source like I recommend, then you may find that the edges of the light source may start reflecting off your glasses. I think that's something you have to play with and move the light farther to the side until you no longer see that glare. Hope this helps, my friend :)

I'm still learning photo but I think you can use a polarizing filter on your lens to counter this.

Can you share your audio settings? Premiere? Thanks.

Hi there! What would you like to know? :)

@@TheKevinShen I guess I was wondering your audio workflow. I'm guessing you have a shotgun just out of frame going into your camera. Do you loudness normalize in Premiere? From there, do you apply any compression, EQ or limiting? Any third-party plugins for audio processing? Thanks.
