HOW TO LIGHTEN HENNA HAIR

So as you may know, Henna is suuuuper permanent. BUT, I found a way to at least lighten the color a little bit. This has evened out my color, made it look like there are highlights, and ultimately gave me a more coppery tone (rather than red). Again, I don't know if this will work on EVERYONE, so be sure to do a strand test before using this product to see how it reacts with your hair.

My henna job was too dark. I used half red and half brown and it was bummer dark. I put olive oil all over my hair and wore a cap for 12 hours. It was a long long time. I was told olive oil lightens henna. I was totally thrilled when i washed out the oil, that my henna job was lightened and the perfect shade that I was looking for. Super natural. Just one more rescue remedy, for those who's henna job goes too dark. :-)

I am a stylist. The reason stylist get upset about henna is that they are only trained in hair dyes and are told horror stories of how bad henna is without being given many specifics or even correct facts about it. The worst that can actually be said about henna is that it doesn’t play nice with other products. As long as you know that henna is a greater commitment than most other products, it’s fine. That is also true with most sun in products.

So basically they are just attacking with "hear say" which doesnt reflect well on them... and the majority do this...

Unfortunately henna has a bad reputation because of products that are called "henna" but they're not. Things with metal salts, PPD and other reactive chemicals and alegens can cause damage, especially when bleached. Then the "green hair" thing comes into the topic, the first thing I think about is "brown henna"(which itself don't exist, pure henna is always and only red/coppery/orangy). There are usually mixes of henna and INDIGO. Indigo is a blue dye, so when you mix indigo(blue) with bleach(that turns your hair yellow at first) what do you get? Green :D

As a henna girl who used to walk out of salons feeling only the burden of disappointment and being broke, I completely understand your plight! I dye(with henna) and bleach my own hair despite all the nasty warnings I got from a couple stylists when I embarked on my self-hair journey 2 years ago. Everyone is so dramatic about henna. As long as it’s pure henna, pretty much everything goes. Thank you for putting this video up btw, it gave me exactly the information I was looking for; its time for my root touch up, but the roots are much darker then I’d like them to be, so I was looking for a lightening solution PRE-root dye. I’d read another success story about a henna head with sun-in, and now I feel confident to try it myself. This is gonna look amazing with my blonde balayage. Thanks so much!!

Thank you for this video! My henna has gotten so freaking dark! I wish I could find a stylist that wouldn't be rude once they find out my color is henna. The worst part is first they compliment my color, then they start telling me I am ruining my hair, that henna is drying and damaging etc. I have thick fine waist length hair. I am gonna try the sun in.

Always amazes me how much stylists don’t know shit about henna. They’re clearly taught about the boxed “henna” hair dyes which contain all sorts of shit and yes, can react badly when you try to put other types of dyes over it. I only do root touch ups with my henna because I don’t want it to darken since henna builds on itself.
@user-vi4yt5ud3c

Lol and that’s precisely why I stopped going to stylists! As soon as you utter the forbidden H-word, they go from praising your illustrious locks to condemning you to the depths of balding hell. Smh! But same my roots are too dark now, I’m excited to try this. Good luck on your henna journey, friend!

I've just ordered the Lush Caca Rouge.. Heard/read from some people that it could be drying.. Is it a good idea to put something like coconut oil or argan oil in the dye mixture? (will be my first time dying with henna)
@clairewillow6475
@clairewillow6475 4 года назад
MyrtheDV you don’t have to add anything, the lush henna already has moisturizer in it but it’s messier and more work (you have to cut up the block and melt it then put it on your hair, it drips etc) and each time you reapply the colour gets more intense So it will look orange at times until it kind of fades .. I find I loved it in the winter with my pale complexion but I tan in the summer so I’m lightening (or trying) back to my natural strawberry blonde hair colour

I was using pure henna in my hair, and it was dark red/auburn. My stylist was able to take me from that to an almost platinum, creamy blonde in ONE 3-hr session, no issues, no breakage. She did have to get creative with the toner because my virgin roots were almost white and my henna'd mids and ends were more peachy after the bleach, but it still came out even. If any stylist gives you grief about henna, RUN.

Former stylist of 18 years here- No stylist is ever trained on henna and just regurgitates the horror stories because yes some henna has metal but its really easy to ensure yours does not. I'm obsessed with Discovery Naturals, check out my video on the wine color. Now I want more copper or even strawberry so this sun in trick is rad and makes perfect sense. Most products we hate on are just being used wrong. Sun in brings out warmth which is why most people hated it because they wanted blonde. TLDR you're rad and beautiful and full of great ideas. Fuck the haters

Henna worths a commitment for life. I had chestnut hair (now going salt&pepper) and as the years went by I tried all the colours available - except black, because I have a rather fair skin. During her lifetime, every woman should try to be a blonde or a red hair or whatever colour is trendy and appeals her.... I was all of that, as I have already said. BUT. Every after each chemical dye I returned to the healing, soothing, nourishing, amazing Henna. Now it can't completely cover my white hair (which I have A LOT), which with Henna becomes copper blonde (I don't like copper blonde, because it makes me look older than I already am) and I'm letting it grow as it is. Because "going grey" is in trend, isn't it? :)) Sadly, I found out that after hair products didn't advance a bit. There's still no shampoo or hair balm or mask which can compete with the "humble" Henna plant properties. And this is why, my dear friends, the stylists and the hair products fabricants hate Henna so much.

I watched a Brad Mondo video on henna (which is where I first started going down the henna hair rabbit hole), and he was super critical of it. Because (most) stylists aren't trained in it, and also because it can be difficult to get out or lighten, they completely write it off as too much work and not worth it, even though it's a lot healthier than repeatedly bleaching your hair and then dyeing it every few weeks. (When I was dyeing mine red, I'd have to touch up roots about every month and the color would fade so fast at 6 weeks it was pink and I'd have to basically redo the whole head.)
@TheAuroraCodes
@TheAuroraCodes 4 года назад
Yesss I watched that and was kind of annoyed, mainly because he didn’t understand that most people do it as a healthier alternative, and it lasts way longer than traditional color. It’s also a meditative process to do. I wish more stylists would give it a chance!

I used to use sun in when I was in high school, and always found that even after I applied it, if I went out in to the sun that it still activated, and my hair went more blonde. I think I used it for a couple of years. Im surprised it is still around to buy. But I never had any problems using it, so I don't know what people are talking about on the forums. lol

Thank you!! This worked for me, although my hair started much darker than yours. It still is, but it is much lighter than it was before the sun-in. I have been henna dyeing my hair for nearly a year. My hair is about 3-4 inches below my shoulders, with 1/3 of the growth only having been dyed with henna and the bottom 2/3 having a history of being dyed with commercial or professional dyes anywhere from gray to bright red to dark purple. I will say this is likely very dependent on your individual hair, but for me I had virtually no damage or change in texture after the sun in - my hair is still very smooth after 2 applications. I'm not saying everyone would have the same luck. But I'm very grateful! I love being a redhead and the look of henna, but it certainly does seem to oxidize and get darker over time. You are fabulous!

I've been using Sun Bum's hair lightening spray the past few weeks and it definitely has lightened it. So far I have zero damage to my hair because I followed the directions. I think that the henna protects one's hair from the damaging effects of the Sun-in... I am just as crazy about henna as you... I use it for EVERYTHAAANG.... Love it... Dont let the haters/stylists get to you... I myself have had thee worst experience with them... Hairstylists have a personality type... just have a look into it... 90% of them are borderline. Thats why so many people complain about them doing their own thing and not worrying about consequences...

I wouldnt go as far as calling them "borderline"... but yes... most commonly hairstylists are personality types that use the cognitive function Fi. Which does influence them to "do their own thing" and not worry about consequences. The majority of hairstylists I met were ENFP.

I did 3 applications (same bottle) over the course of 2 months, leaving plenty of time in between treatments so my hair could recover. My hair is very fine and thin, so I didn't want to risk nuking it if I used a whole bottle in one go. 😉 I should probably mention that my hair was never dyed with anything that contained metallic salts and I treated my hair with hair oils every day in between applications with Sun In. In my case, I was able to lighten my colour by about 3-4 shades over the course of 2 months and my hair is still healthy. Good luck. xx

That is true! Henna bleaches but indigo doesn't. It stays drab green. But maybe a very slight lift would look ok. That is DEFINITELY a test-strand situation.

Hey I came back to this video because I want to try this method to brighten my henna hair just a touch. I wanted to ask you if you noticed breakage or dryness, or other signs of damage, after using this method? Because going lighter means breaking down pigment, there will always technically be some damage, but this method would be a lot less than using strong bleach etc. Thanks so much for posting the video ❤!

Thanks so much for your vid! I’ve been using lush henna and it gets darker every time. I’ve let my roots grow out about 3cm to eventually do the vitamin c treatment to wash it out, to then get highlights to go lighter, though I think I’m just going to do this!!!! Thanks so so much ❤️

Can anybody tell me how to do this on wavy/curly hair? Will this work with diffusing or do I need to brush it out while drying?

What is your natural hair color? I have naturally blonde hair but it's more on the darker side. I've been dying my hair with henna 3 different times now and have been trying to go for a coppery strawberry blonde shade but since my hair is om the darker side of blonde most the time it comes out a brownish coppery shade. Any advice?

What was your natural hair color before henna? I'm just curious because mine is a dark brown so I'm not sure how well it'd lighten, but I DID think of Sun-In yesterday as I was wondering if it could lighten. :D

I love your color! Can you tell me how did you manage for your ends to be lighter than the scalp, seeing as henna doesn't wash out and by that logic all the color should be of the same intensity?
@TheAuroraCodes
@TheAuroraCodes 5 лет назад
It naturally happened that way because when I first put henna on my hair, my hair color was a lighter blonde, so as my natural roots grew in it was a bit darker and created the ombré!

I used the same henna as you because I got inspiration from your video. I love your hair colour and like you I wanted more of a copper tone. Unfortunately it never came out quiet as nice as your colour. I don't know if I burnt my henna haha
@TheAuroraCodes
@TheAuroraCodes 5 лет назад
I don't think you can burn it! I pour boiling water mine haha- what color was underneath it? If it was light, the henna will eventually fade to be more copper, I've also heard of people adding lemon to their concoction for a copper color!
@alannah1356

@@TheAuroraCodes I was cooking it rather then letting it melt with hot water 😂 It was a redish tone originally but it was bleached underneath that. I'll be doing more roots soon so I'll give this a try. Thank you 😊

I have been hennaing my hair for the last year and I love it, I'm happy with my hair health and color, however like you said I'm dealing with the ombre effect, I really like the color my ends are but the top is getting too dark for my liking so that's how I stumbled upon this video, curious if there's anything I can mix with the pure henna powder to have it apply a bit lighter. I know people mention lemon juice but how much? A half a cup?

I've been dying my hair with henna for over 10 years and have learned a lot through trial and error. When I use only henna it's way to dark for my liking so I now use a mixture of henna and cassia obovata. I usually do three parts cassia to one part henna, but your mixture will really depend on your preference.

I know you're naturally blonde but have you used bleach before and then Sun In? I've used Sun In for a little bit last year and this year bleached my hair, nothing bad happened. But I was thinking of using Sun In on the upper part of my hair, towards my roots to lighten it alittle bit. I have dyed my hair red and I'm a henna user too lol

I wonder if this really only works on blonde or bleached hair? Since they say sun-in is really for blondes anyway. Mine is more of a light brown and now I have a pretty deep red from the henna.

I'm not sure! I feel that it would lighten it at least a little bit! You could always try a strand test
@OCDSims24

I tried this method and didn't see too much of a difference, but it was winter and if I had sun I'm sure it would be much lighter. However, I wanted everyone to know that if you wanted to go blonde like me, to lighten it is already difficult with henna because of what the henna could contain. But if you use the method of lightening your hair in the video just a smidge, your hair will turn sage green like mine. I'm fine with it and have fixed it. However, the ammonia in the product used in the video will stay in your hair and turn green. Just an fyi.

Turned green? May have had indigo (black henna) added to it. Indigo bleaches out green and it wouldn't surprise me to find any other removal method would pull green as well!

You can blow dry after applying the " sun in spray "to help activate it in winter months,finding sunshine will be an even greater benefit 😊
