Hi, I’m in the process of finishing a 70” credenza that had so much intricate detail and it has taken me over three weeks to finish because I wanted to get to the raw finish and use Dixie belle voodoo gel in grey up in smoke and I did paint stripper, bleach, and many hours of sanding. I must say it was a challenge, but it’s all stained and it is beautiful. Why didn’t I find your channel before I started? 😂
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts Год назад
I feel like that kind of thing always happens huh? Your credenza sounds like it’s beautiful now. I do feel like some of the best DIYs are the ones that require the most work. Thanks for stopping by and watching. It means so much to me!

Thank you so much! Since I was working in one small section are a time…it took me about 2 weeks. But I only got 1 hour per day. Working on projects with little people makes the project take longer haha

I LOVE the look of your coffee table. I have a round ottoman /coffee table that I also love. You have inspired me to change it to be more contemporary, which is the vibe in my house. It was very dark, so dark that you could not even see the grain of the wood. I sanded the larger main parts with an orbital sander. Unfortunately it is veneer, so I did make a couple of bo0-boos, but they add a bit of character, right? (LOL). Tomorrow I will put the natural Danish oil. Then I want to put the white wax on, like you did. I want that soft finish. I have one problem. Being new to this I need to know....what is white wax? I went looking for sone today, and I found a clear wax by Magnolia, but I want the white wax. Where did you get it? What brand?
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts Год назад
Thank you so much!! The white wax I used was from Home Depot by BEHR. I can’t believe I didn’t add that in the video!! I’ll see if I can find a link and add it to the description! I hope it turns out good and I’d love for you to let me know how it goes once you’re finished!!!

Looks great!! I got a similar look without sanding and stripping by using Easy Off oven cleaner. It was a really messy process, but it stripped and bleached in one step, small bit of sanding in some places. The piece was solid maple in a really orange tone. It came out amazing with a finish like yours and I sealed it with a clear wax.

I’ve heard about the Easy Off oven cleaner. It made me nervous since I’ve never done it before. But you and a few other ladies have told me it works like a charm. So next time that’s what I’m gonna do. I’m so glad you stopped by! Have a great week!

Would you think I could use Easy Off oven cleaner to lighten my door frame? My doors are white, walls are beige, but all door frames are dark brown (original owner was a bachelor, I think he just picked builder’s default design).
@CyndyOstergaard
@CyndyOstergaard 9 месяцев назад
I would try to figure out what type of wood was used to trim out your doors first. Just to be sure you know what you will be uncovering. It may be several types of wood jointed together and these joints will show through after the wood is stripped.@@selinaMarks675

Do you think this would be hard to do on oak kitchen cabinets?
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts Год назад
My short answer is YES! But I would do some research to figure out what would be best for the top coat. I’m not sure, but I feel like wax wouldn’t be a great option just because kitchens can be messy. Maybe find a top coat that is a little bit more glossy to make wiping them down easier. You’ll have to let me know if you decide to do it!! I’d love to know how they turn out!

I hope I didn't ruin my dinning room furniture because I stripped it, flat black chalked legs and backs of chairs and after being so excited...... proceeded with the wrong stain! Help! I used Jacobean! Will bleach work I wanted a farmhouse look,. Thank goodness I didn't start my hutch yet
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts Год назад
Bleach will lighten it. But after you use household bleach you will need to sand it because it does make the woods rough. Also If you need it a completely different color you might want to strip it again. I hope that household bleach does what you need it to. Stripping a piece of furniture twice is never fun. Keep me posted on what works for you.

@@opendoorsopenhearts Oh ok I was wondering because I have a medium oak crib with no shellac like your piece had, it is just a matte stain and I wanted to lighten it and give it a more natural ashy oak look like the trendy wood tones -so I was just going to go straight in with the bleach on a rag and let it sit in the sun.

Hi you have a very clear instruction of the table makeover. I appreciate that. I also liked your pep talk at the end. I have a 30 year old pine dining table that has a horrible orange color and I want to change it but I’m not sure if it is a veneer or wood. Couldn’t I just sand it down and skip using a stripper?
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts 2 года назад
You can absolutely go straight to sanding. With Veneer you want to be careful when sanding because the layers are thin. So you can accidentally sand down through the layer that has the pretty grain quickly. I actually did this on accident with the top of this coffee table in the corner. I realized it quickly and corrected, but now one corner is a little bit darker.

The top of my table actually was a wood veneer. And it lightened it. I think I would try a test area in a spot you wouldn’t notice much and see how that turned out. Let me know how it goes!

I tried it on the stains that I could not sand out and it did remove most of them now have to go after the remaining ones. I used cheap bleach that is 2.5 percent vice 7 percent. So going to get some 7 percent and see how it works. Thank you@@opendoorsopenhearts

Please can you help me on something? I’ve sanded an old pine cabinet . I’ve bleached it and applied a white dye several times but yellow stains keep coming through. How can I seal this but still keep the natural looking wood prior to painting?
@opendoorsopenhearts
@opendoorsopenhearts 2 года назад
If your plan to paint the cabinet I would probably just do a primer so that the paint adheres. then after the paint you can seal it with a wax or poly. What is the white dye you used? Depending on what that is you might have to sand the cabinet to get the primer to adhere.
