I found a big reason my ferrets weren't using their box was because the sides on a lot of litterpans were too high, and they couldn't be bothered to climb in. I buy cheap plastic bins at Walmart and cut them so the openings to get in the box is very shallow and then they don't seem to poop right outside the box. Also, bedding the bottom of the cage with something soft helps keep my ferrets from having accidents, they don't like to poop on blankets since they sleep on them. Hope that might be helpful to someone!
If u can't get the corner springs then you could just put maybe a food bowl in one corner, maybe a water bowl in the other basically put something in every corner and put a litter box in their fave corner. It worked rlly well for me
nobody should be getting cage springs at all, they are an ugly waste of space... cage attachable food/water crocks along with proper beds should be secured to every corner of the cage save the corner you put their litter pan in... ferrets naturally dont poop where they eat/drink or sleep.
I didn’t even want to try litter for that reason. I just cut up dog potty pads into 4ths and just change it daily and toss them in a a diaper genie for babies. Works well and don’t have to worry about vacuuming debris.
I got my first ferret oliver from petland the first day he came home I let him poop then I scooped it up put it in the litter box and put that in the same spot and he has always used the litter box since I got another ferret from Craigslist and I can’t for the life of me get him to go in a litter box
I would like to say thank you for this video I've had this set up fir 6 days now following all your advice and it has worked. I didn't have any springs but I used some metal shower hooks joined together in the corners attached to the bars to deter them and I also tied blankets to the bars so the could not move them to much from the corners and made a hole in their box used a shower hook to hold it in plave to the cage as one of my naughty ones was moving it around to poop next to it 😂. It has worked we haven't had any poops out of the litter box at all today👍hallelujah!
I got a 7 month old ferret a week and a half ago and she is going everywhere… even on her covers and on top of her bed, which is really strange as most ferrets don’t want to go where they sleep. Any ideas why she might be doing this? She’s fine out of the cage. Only accident she’s had is on my bed, which she’s done twice now
I’m so sorry to read that. I have no experience unfortunately with that type of problem. Perhaps your vet would have good insight into that behavior? I truly wish I had an answer.
My daughter has 3 ferrets that are around two year old.. She is at her wits end trying to litter train them. We bought the corner litter pans but have tried all kinds of pans. They move them are kick them out of the way and poop right there. It doesn't matter they will poop on the blankets. She has a ferret nation cage these are not accidents they look right at you when they use the bathroom. They just back up to the cage and let it go. I have use lemon juice to kill the smell. Don't know what else to do. Any suggestions.
Never use corner litter pans they are two small imagine trying to poop on a little kids potty just no. Get cat litter boxers that are easy to jump in cut a hole if you must, scrub the whole cage clean make sure there is no smell left what so ever put there poops in the litter trey and make sure all corners are filled with something either food bowls or something so the aren’t tempted to go there xx
Ma'am, if you could please give me some tips. My ferret, (4 months old) hasn't been pooping in her litter tray. and I did all the things you said, but she doesn't care where she poops, so how would I go about training her?
Amber C I’m so sorry this didn’t work for you. It isn’t a fool proof system and sadly some ferrets will not litter train. Did you try confining her to a smaller area? Did you buy a new litter pan and use the sawdust litter and put some of her poop in the corner of the new pan? Did you use a strong soap and then straight lemon juice to clean the entire cage? Sorry it this sounds rude, I’m not trying to be insulting, I’m truly trying to solve any possible problem. If you’ve done all this then another trick is to put her in the litter pan as soon as you notice she’s awakened from a nap. Keep putting her in it no matter how many times she jumps out. As soon as she does it reward her by letting her out of her cage. She should get better with time and rewards.
I just bought a ferret and he's at 3 mos old. I tried to train him on puppy pads but he wants to play with it instead. Going to give this a try. Btw...are their names from Step Brothers? I love that movie.
Great video! Ten minutes at a time, how do you do that!? I can barely put our in their hut for the night. Do you ever put old towels or sheets or blankets in there for them to snuggle? I have a couple that enjoy the hammocks but most ferrets love to dig in a blankly for sleeping. 🥰
My ferret is about 9 weeks, I put her food bowl in one corner and water in the other and then i put her litterbox in another and toys on the other one but she just poops on her toys and sleeps in her litterbox, Ive tried putting poop inside the box but she still wont use it and sleeps in it :( idk what else to do. She also has those same paper pellets yours had before and her pan is a square lock on one. What should i do? I clean her cage everyday
Kathlyn is change the litter to the feline pine like I did. My ferrets played in the pellets too. They don’t play in the pine sawdust litter. Hope this helps.
There is dust free litter, if you want to go with that. I do know that it’s important not to use the clay clumping litter, just use a natural pine or newspaper litter.
Our ferrets are old and have bad poop habits for years. Regardless of all the tips and tricks, ours don't care. They poop while they walk 😅🤦♀️. In hoping to find a way to make cleaning up easier as pee pads are like paper and they just shred the crap out of em. 😅🤦♀️🤦♀️ ( My girls are 9yrs old. And litter and all medium is a play toy)
