It doesn't make a huge difference, but 50% charge is best for long term storage. If you have a voltage meter (multimeter) you can measure the battery voltage, 50% is 18V. 100% is about 20.5V, not sure what 0% is.

RU-vid channel "Seeker" has done a great series of videos on batteries. They invited an expert to talk about battery longevity and he recommended that, for Li-ion, it's best to keep the charge above a certain threshold; 30% as a rule of thumb. Charged particles help maintain structural integrity and too few of them cause extra wear and tear on the battery. Think of it as a Jenga tower: remove too many blocks and it'll cave. This applies to all Li-ion batteries, including smartphones, ebikes, ...

All these comments, but not one person correct. Makita put the power for the module that kills it on just one cell. That board acts as a parasite load, and kills those cells faster. Makita has no balance charge in their design, so those 2 or 3 cells eventually fail, way faster than the other 8. They take the surrounding cells with them by recharging off them constantly. This is day 1 shit in building a lion pack, and to say its just an accidental bad design is defending the indefensible. I rebuild packs to make extra money, and Ive seen these packs literally blow the cells. You NEVER place an uneven parasite load on a lithium ion pack, no matter how small. To do that, and not have a balance system is building a pack with the intent of it failing. They literally rig the system by having it brick the battery after 3 failed checkups. Who the helll wont try several times to get it to charge. When you compare that obvious flaw with how well their tools are made, it becomes blatently obvious its intentional. Throw the makita charger away, cut that single wire running into the middle of the pack, and just charge on a manual or hobby charger to 20v. Or soldier leads on a shit pack and alligator clip the positive and negative on your bricked batteries. Drop the shitty pack that reads in the cradle and charge the batteries you actually use in parallel.

You are perfectly right. Makita cheats on battery life by marking god overdischarged bateries as bad after 3 attempts to charge a deeply discharged battery. They have made that design deliberatly to make more money from seling batteryes. The charger marks the batery as bad instead of trickle charging it with a small current until it reaches a safe voltage for normal charge. Thei are cheating peoples. The tools are verry god but you are robt on batteries.Excuse my english.

I bought into this system for big money when it first came out. I paid $1600 for a 3 speed drill, skill saw impact gun, flashlight. The kit came with 3 batteries and a mail in offer for a free radio. Well the radio killed the first 3 batteries in weeks by running them down to 0 volts. I got new ones under warranty. But there is a obvious design flaw. I now have the heated jacket and it too kills batteries. Like others I feel the tools themselves are top notch. But the fact that the batteries seem to be designed to fail when paired with the tools is most concerning. It seems like a intentional design flaw to get you to keep buying batteries. My hobby experience has taught this layman more about lithium ion batteries than the makita designers. Pretty sad that the cut off on the tools misses the mark. Sadder to realize the designers did it intentionally.

lithium ION batteries are different than lithium polymer batteries for rc vehicles. lithium ION does not need to be storage charged. they can be left ran down or left fully charged. however these makita batteries cannot be left low because they have a circuit in them that will keep draining the battery. it will prevent the makita charger from charging it if it goes below their cut off. which is definitely set too high. I have tested several of the bl1830 units and they're at 17.98 and the makita charger will not charge. that's only 3.5 per cell. 2.5v is actually the limit for lithium ion batteries. the cut off could be set to 3. why set it to cut off at 3.5? to sell you more batteries.

This is mainly because of wrong usage. Usually, this happens because two cells in one series get drained (overload/heated/cold; or they were almost empty after use and the cells drained themselves). Thats why always half charge them after use. The chip is not necessarly "marked" as one could suspect. But yes they should install intelelgence against all those situations. A solution/hack that worked for me everytime is to open the pack - locate the batteries in series that are supiciously low via multimeter - ca. 1v - chop off the mini end of a usb cable - and carge the cells up seperatly in series by pluging the usb into power - connect the naked ends of about 5v/low amps onto the ends of the series (all still conected and together) - plus to plus and minus to minus - after five min check the voltage make sure nothing is heating up and repeat for 5 min- check the voltage - if the series is now telling you 10v - you are probably good to go. Screw everything back together and recharge the pack properly - let them cool off and put them to good use - the cells or one of the two cells are probably not the fittest any more but they will work again.

do not charge your batteries while still hot. this must have been a misunderstanding. once you notice your batteries over heating, let it cool off and recharge it 10 to 5 min later. after a full charge, if still hot let them cool off for a patient 30 sec. further tips would be: do not charge them fully after a finished project if you aren't going to use them the next day, a partiall charge would be much better. But also do not let them sit for longer time after a full discharge. Keep them away from the sun and from cold temperatures as much as possible - but most of all get the job done.

these batteries suck! i use 2.0 amp 18v for a drywall gun and the power delivery is inconsistent and weak, the charge also has a mind of its own and sometimes it lasts for 3 hrs, sometimes for 2, sometimes for 1 ... makita is a scam

This guy is worse than useless. My take on it from what I have read is: 1 new battery - charge it to full right before you plan to use it; mine took 60 min 2 If after use it's 1/2 charged, or more, leave it off the charger till you plan its next use. Keep battery at room temp. Heat is bad. 3 if after use it's less than 1/2 charged, charge it for a short time to bring it back to the 50 - 75% range for short term storage. Before next use bring it back to 100% charge. Keep battery at room temp. Heat is bad; i.e. in your car on hot summer day. Don't store it in the charger; always charging. Don't run it down to nothing, once you can tell it's getting low stop & charge it. If the battery gets really hot during use, stop and let it cool down. Some say on the charger since it has a fan. Wonder if the fridge for 10 minutes would work too? (don't forget it and leave it in there!) Any other suggestions to maximize the life on these expensive to replace items?

It is sickening to hear a Makita rep abuse the "Amp Hour" term. It gives the impression that you do not understand what you are talking about. It also encourages others to misuse the term. "Amp" is not an acceptable abbreviation for "Amp Hour". Please learn to use terminology correctly in public presentations. I have lost some affection for the Makita brand name.

Lithium has memory ! Empty your battery fully, put to charger after 2 months and battery will not charged ! If you not use your tool, make sure, the bateries are fully charged before you put your tools to storage room !

+conollystation Lithium does NOT have memory effect. In contrary, keeping them fully charged in storage actually stresses the battery. Source: i am an electrical engineer, see more at batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries

+tHaH4x0r I lost one of my batteries from multitool and 1 battery from laptop. Both was lithium. The same way I lost 3 batteries NiCd from my Makita set, when I left them flat in 2008,I could not charge them in 2014.

+tHaH4x0r The multitool lithium battery was flat only about 1.5 month, could not charge it after. The battery from laptop was flat for about 4 months, could not charge it after.

+conollystation That is not memory effect, that is because of the cell having an internal parallel resistance and slowly discharging over time. If NiCd or LiOn cells get below a certain voltage when discharging they are permanently destroyed. 'Real' memory effect is if a battery is repeatedly discharged to a certain level before being completely charged again, its capacity seems to decrease after multiple charge/discharge cycles. The memory effect you are referring to is the voltage depression effect, sometimes called lazy battery effect, which happens when a partially discharged NimH or NiCad battery is fully charged for longer periods, slowly losing capacity. This however only seems this way, discharging the battery to 1V and then charging them again brings them back to full health.

If the batteries dip below a certain voltage (because you left them empty for a long time) then the charger will refuse to charge them (this is an important safety feature). However usually the battery is perfectly ok. If you can get access to a DC power supply you can restore them yourself Just charge them at 18v at 0.5 amp until the battery voltage rises to 18v Then put them back on the makita charger, and it should be fine Don't leave them empty for any period of time, best to store them long term at 50% full (the battery should be at about 18v)
