Ask Dr. Mike QnA: How To Lose Weight While Breast Feeding
Today's question comes from a Facebook Fan. She asks:
=====
What can do for nutritionally as a nursing mom? Sometimes I feel like its not possible to lose weight as a nursing mom because I'm so afraid of losing my milk supply. Any suggestions?
=====
In these situations it is important to focus on metabolism enhancing activities and not metabolism decreasing activities (such as excessive caloric restriction).
In this video I discuss 2 calorie burning keys for losing weight while breast feeding and then how to estimate your calorie needs to elicit weight loss while breast feeding.

I would suggest after having a baby not to worry about "weight loss" too many hormones and loss of sleep to be able to do it right. Just focus on intuitive eating, rest and lots of breastfeeding. The weight will come off trust me. 9 months to grow a baby usually a year to lose all the postpartum weight. DONT PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON YOURSELF YOU ARE A BADASSMOTHERBIRTHER!! Regardless of size.

Great message!! And thanks for that but some of us don’t feel our best with the added weight .. but you’re right! I’m feeding a little human here, pumping, trying to keep everything nice and tidy, cooking 🥵 cleaning afterwards.. loosing weight doesn’t seem all that important after it all lol

as a mom of two I can say for some women the weight just refuses to come off no matter how well you do sometimes, but the TWO things that actually worked for me to finally get the weight off was 1) When my first started eating solid foods and stopped breastfeeding And 2) when I added in regular workouts. my second is still breastfeeding and I couldn't lose a single ounce until I started working out, despite a very strict diet. I added in just 30 min of cardio and some strength training and now I'm finally see results. From my experience alone I can say you have given good solid advice in this video, thank you!

It is a common misconception that the extra calories burned while breastfeeding make as big of an impact as you are stating. This can be very discouraging to a mother who is struggling with this very thing so please consider researching further and then revising this video. It is not just as simple as a math equation. When you take the constantly shifting hormones, fatigue, lost sleep, depression, and anxiety into account that comes along with giving birth and then breastfeeding, you then realize how unique each woman's situation really is. Breastfeeding, on a biological level, is designed to tell your mind and body to slow down and also to eat more in order to facilitate the milk production process. So women naturally feel more tired, depressed, slower, their metabolism slows, and also, to make matters worse, we feel hungrier. Working against that biology can damage milk supply and increase post-partum depression symptoms. No, we shouldn't be eating 4,000 calories a day, but simply attempting to adhere to a math equation is not the answer and will do nothing but, like I said, perpetuate post-partum depression and could potentially damage the milk supply. I feel like you subscribed to the old research that breastfeeding burns a few more calories and then ran off a cliff with that information before digging deeper or checking out new studies. Just please keep in mind that when you post videos like this you are taking thousands of mothers who trust you right off the cliff with you. I'm not saying this is the worst video on RU-vid, but it does feel inaccurate, under-researched, and potentially damaging to mothers who are already going through A LOT.

I've seen info that actually states calories burned from breast feeding can be between 200-800 daily! Of course all of those things you listed are valid points, we as new mothers do feel over tired, stressed, anxious, and HUNGRY! However, if weight loss is truly a goal we cannot use these things as excuses which hold us back from our goals. Weightloss is way more mental than it is physical, we and our excuses are our biggest road block along this journey! My daughter is 6 months and I spent the first 5 months of her life making excuses as to why I'm gaining and not losing, a lot of what you listed, guess what, it did me no good to do that, in fact it made me gain back the 20lbs I initially lost after the birth! It wasnt until I held myself accountable and started making better choices that the pounds started coming off. All I'm doing is tracking my calories (1800 a day) drinking 3-4L of water daily, and I ditched my morning coffee for green tea. The healthier the foods I eat, the more volume of food I can have in a day so I try stick to that, but if I'm craving pizza I allow it and just adjust my calories for the day to fit in the pizza! I'm down 11 lbs so far and haven't even started working out, which I will be soon once my husband is done school and can watch the kids while I go to the gym 3 times a week! We as new moms (this is my 3rd child) do go through a lot, especially in the first year of babies life and there's a lot of pressure to lose the weight quickly. If it's truly something you want then you have to drop the self pity and excuses and just put in work. Yes, it will be hard and there will be days where you feel like you've failed, but you just have to keep going and eventually the results will show and be huge motivation to continue!

It's been a couple years so I'm really hoping you've learned more about how many women store extra fat while nursing (mother nature's way of preparing for you to sustain your baby through a famine). My docs & midwives have all said it's normal for nursing women to store extra fat, while others can lose extra weight while nursing. I can't lose more than 1-2 lbs/month while nursing even with eating healthy and exercising regularly, but I drop 10 pounds the week I stop. Every woman is different. Also, the whole "Calories in, calories out" mentality is dated. It's what TYPE of calories you're consuming that matters. If you're eating 1500 calories of processed junk food a day, you're not going to be healthy no matter how many calories you're burning, & you may not lose weight either. Please go more in depth. Hormones, sleep, cycles, PPD, exercise, age, medications (like birth control) are only some of the weight loss factors in this nursing equation. I expected a "doctor" to know these basics. I usually don't leave critical comments, but I worry that your ideas could be harmful and discouraging to women who cannot lose the weight following your simple caloric math equation.

You are right. Working out 4 times a week while breastfeeding made me eat even more than I already was and that made loosing weight impossible. I was counting macros, I didn’t see a big difference. at night I would become starving too and eat a full meal before bed.

I started working out while breastfeeding but I became much more ravenous because now I was doing workouts and breastfeeding 3 times a day. This led to me not really making any progress. I gained some muscle but not much, I looked slightly better but really wouldn’t budge the fat. I had a feeling it was from breastfeeding. It’s been 3 years so I weened her a month ago, I wonder if I workout now what would happen?

New research says 20 cal are burned with each ounce of breastmilk made. So the amount of calories burned is greatly varied depending on how much baby drinks. So if baby is drinking 50 oz. a day at 3 months that's a 1,000 cal. burned. I would say breastfeeding in enough without exercise.

What about net calories? I have been using myfitnesspal and this diary has demonstrated that I have been eating on average 1300 cals per day yet the scale is not moving. I do not have a thryoid issue... I've been told that I am in storage mode now, since I have only lost 1.4lbs in 50 days. Could it be a hormonal thing? Why am I not loosing?

What if weight loss is less about calories in calories out, and more about nutrition in, toxins out? Fat neutralizes toxins, the more toxins a human body has in it, the more inflated the fat cell becomes. The crazy thing is, is that exercise while absolutely great, of not coupled with proper hydration and actual detoxifying foods, the fat cell releases toxins, only to be reabsorbed and yet again neutralized by fat. I think there are so many diets out there and methods, and the reason is that people are focused in weight loss, not detoxing. Anyway... just had to comment.

This is nonsense, & potentially dangerous. "The effects of exercise on milk supply hasn't really been studied..." "... but what we do know is that exercise doesn't affect your milk supply." NOT true. I've nursed 8 babies so far, each for a minimum of a year, and exercise has ALWAYS affected my milk supply, especially before about the 4 month mark. After then, once it's established, it doesn't affect it SO dramatically, but it still does to a degree. Different women's bodies are different; some women lose weight easily while breastfeeding, and some women's bodies hold onto fat ferociously while they are breastfeeding. If you want good advice on breastfeeding, find a woman, or group of women, who have done it successfully for the length of time you want to, with the results you want to have (i.e., consider: do they have fussy babies who nurse 24/7, do they have babies who grow healthily, did they end up having to supplement with formula because of their commitment to losing weight, etc.), and listen to THEIR advice rather than a man who A- has never done it, and B- readily admits he's giving opinions without scientific data to back it up.

I read once that you put on weight after having a baby for the purpose of breastfeeding and it was a biological and evolutionary norm to ensure you have enough calories to make milk and that your metabolism slows down to ensure you have enough energy to produce it. All women are different. I've always been active and know the input /output method but noticed its alot harder to lose unwanted fat after having a baby while breast feeding. I have a reduced amount of milk also after exercise which may not be the case for other women. You can always loose the weight later if you really want to once you know your child no longer needs milk. Dont put pressure on yourselves. Loose the weight later.

@@Sara-wv3ms You still got to feed em after work out. You can stop breast feeding when you like. In my opinion continue eating healthy and trying to fit in gentle excercise like walking and toning in early stages of breast feeding. You may have less time to excercise with young kids and depending on your situation. All I know is that running reduced my milk supply. Reducing food reduced my milk supply but my food intake is not the same as everyone elses. After a big meal my boobs would fill up till the point they hurt that was my experience.
@mazdaheb1823

@@Sara-wv3ms Ahh. I hate how these so called professionals try to put everybody into the same boat. Someone who has loads of childcare help can get on with loosing weight and burning fat when they are ready. It also annoys me when they dont mention anything about our biology and why we gain weight. There is no hurry. You will loose the weight when your ready and in my experience it will be easier to loose it not in the early stages of breastfeeding. I started walking abit after 6 months. With my daughter I was running and my hips were not ready. They were loose still as were my ligaments Didnt understand why my joints hurt and why I couldn't loose the weight. Then with my son I started walking when he was 6 months and toning for about a year and a bit. When he was 15 months I started walking/ jogging together and started to restrict my calories a little. They recommend feeding the baby breastmilk for 2 years then they tell you you can stop after 6 months. I know 2 people who were obsessed with loosing weight and told me they stopped producing milk well before 6 months. I work from home so not in any hurry to stop breast feeding and I had difficulty pumping anyway. I have a 3 year old who needs time also. I do have a partner so in the summer was excercising when he got home for an hour. Now evenings are getting dark I go do a couple of hours sat and couple of hours sun when my boy has a nap. He dont nap that long but maybe an hour to make up for the week as cant do the 1 hour a night weekday anymore. He is 19 months now and still loves his boobie and because hes not dependent on just breastmilk and eats loads my body isn't full of crazy hormones. Good luck. Listen to your body and just remember everyone's situation and support is different. If you cant loose it while breast feeding just fit a walk into your daily life with baba and dont go crazy with calories. Eat more with less calories later on. Fill yourself up so your not hungry. Ie 3 eggs 180 calories same as 2 oat choc biscuits which leave you hungry. Load of grapes instead of raisins. You get the pic. Xx

@@Sara-wv3ms its bad isnt it. We should be encouraging moms not to worry about it and that it's ok the put on some weight. It's like fat shaming new moms who want to breast feed sometimes and making them feel lazy when they already have their hands full and want to concentrate on their child. Apparently that hormone 'Relaxin' is supposed to stay in your body for upnto 5 months after giving birth. It was still affecting my joints well after that. I started about 6 months after and was still feeling pain for months after that. I couldn't run like I used to and didnt know what was causing the pain. Had to seriously slow it down. For my second child after the painful experience I bought an elasticated belt that goes round your hips. It is designed for post pregnancy excercise and helps push your hips back in and support them while exercising. Another thing I learned is that alot of women get Diastis Recti. Makes em look fat when in fact it's the abdominal walls that need tightening. Sit ups make it worse. You can do exercises to fix it and tests to see if you have it. Wish you all the best sweety. Dont worry. Look after baby first and the other stuff will sort itself and of course not when others think your ready but when you are ready. Xx I feel like an old lady writing all this stuff. 😊

I really have trouble taking breastfeeding and pregnancy advice from men. This didn't help. I lost weight while breastfeeding without ever having a clue how many calories I was taking in. I guarantee you it was WELL over the number he gives here. Growing and nurturing babies often defies equations and formulas. Don't be discouraged by this video mamas! Enough with the math! Have a baby, dude! Grow some boobs! Then talk to me about how to feed a baby and lose weight simultaneously. It's an art, not a science. And it's certainly not "math".
@MsNwalters
@MsNwalters 5 лет назад
🤦🏻‍♀️ Scientifically, it’s actually proven that it is completely about math! Your ‘math’, aka calorie needs, may not look the same as someone else’s based on your age, height, weight, activity level, metabolism etc. but just because you’re eating more calories then he is stating doesn’t mean he is not correct. I guarantee you, if you were losing weight you were burning more calories then you were eating. It’s simple science. No other way to lose weight besides calories in vs calories out. Just because he’s a man doesn’t make him wrong.
