Not sure if I’m going off on a tangent, but when dropping the stem, necessarily that’ll result in reducing the space between the top of the knees and the torso, at the top of the pedal stroke (closing?) the hip angle to some extent. Countering clash of knees to torso in the more slammed position could be by a)reducing stem length? b)reducing crank arm length? c)reducing biscuits and gravy? Also, could the same “experiment” with lower position procedure be followed for 2019 venge? Regardless, fantastic work in this and all other videos, many thanks.

It can be done, but you have to use a small saw guide and the remaining amount of steerer tube needs to be at least long enough for the saw guide to clamp on.

@stinkybeam
@stinkybeam 3 года назад
I don't recommend do this without cutting short brake hose. because most BSA BB don't have a "cup" inside the frame. So if you just push down the stem, brake hose will be lowered too, and it's very likely that brake hose will touch the spindle of crankset, and rub it. I know this because it happens to my bike.
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 3 года назад
sooo, this is where the bottom bracket comes into play, shimnao and sram stock bb both have plastic sheeths covering them so there is not direct contact with a rotating spindle...... but if you use an aftermarket bb or maybe an installed wrong one then yes this is possible.... also the cable slack should be allowed mainly in the handlebar to hide excess

As per Tarmac's user manual, a spacer bigger than 5 mm shall not be placed above the open stem cover. Is it because of the top cap bolt's length? And what are the risks of installing a spacer bigger than the recommended one? Thanks.
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 3 года назад
dont worry about it, as long as you tighten the pinch bolts on the stem to the right torque readings I have slammed my stem and rode with all the spacers on the top no worries at all
@IPAColosseum
@IPAColosseum 3 года назад
@@GCPerformance18 I tried this today and was wondering the same after noticing the comment in the Tarmac user manual... I think in theory you could remove all the spacers from below the stem, and then the stem would be gripping the steerer tube below the expansion plug... isn't this a problem? I just slammed mine by 15mm but this is a pretty crucial part of the bike so don't want to F something up and have a life altering crash as a result....lol
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 2 года назад
@@IPAColosseum On the safer side of things, ideally you want to clamp the reinforced section of the steerer tube. Specialized's expander plug is a little taller (if not just as tall) than a stem's steerer tube clamp. You also may have heard of people deliberately running long expander plugs for this purpose.

Yes it is, just remember to take note of the minimum insertion mark's distance from the edge of the seatpost, then make a new mark post-cut. If it's an uber-lightweight carbon seatpost like Darimo's, no. It has a designated clamping zone, so the carbon's thickness is only thicker in that zone.

Could you post a video with the Roubaix 2020 with FS2.0 and the Tarmac SL7 stem? Curious how it will looks since since the future stem is only available in 6 degr and tarmac sl7 stem 12 degrees. Already installed lower top cap and hoover bars replaced with standard spesh bars

Specialized manual says you can only put a maximum of 5mm spacer between the stem and the cap.

of course, that is it, but i have seen there own reps rocking all the way slammed,

@@GCPerformance18 If you are needing more than 5mm on top then you need to start chopping that steerer. Wouldn't want to violate warranty terms. 👍🏻

Hi GC Performance. I own a 2020 venge frame. Need to change stem but not able to find one in correct length. Do you think can use SL7 stem with Venge spacers ? Some say the spacers wont line up properly. Would appreciate ure thoughts !
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 2 года назад
It won't, but if you use the Venge's other headset cover (the one with three holes, two for the brake hoses, one for the Di2/EPS wire) alongside a bunch of regular round spacers, any stem is compatible with the Venge.

Just wondering, do you have to use spacers? What’s the risk of not using the spacers?
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 Год назад
you need to, the fill up the empty space, so you run the risk of the fork being able to move up and down if not filled by spacers
@henrikolsson6513
@henrikolsson6513 3 года назад
When you cut the fork, how much lower should it be to the steam?
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 3 года назад
The distance between the top edge of the stem and the edge of the steerer tube should be 3 - 5 mm. If your steerer tube plug has a flange that rests on top of the steerer tube when installed, take the flange's thickness into account too. The Specialized steerer tube compression plug's flange is a little over 1 mm thick, so I usually cut 4 mm below my first mark (the mark that's flush with the stem at the desired stem height), making the steerer tube 5 mm lower than the top edge of the stem. Once the plug is installed, it'd be about 3.5 mm.
